Live performance is definitely where Perry showed his dominance. I've had fanboys troll me into debates about Freddie Mercury or Steve Tyler or Brad Delp, etc. were all better singers, and the debate ends whenever we contrast their performances LIVE. No disrespect to all the aforementioned singers, but they would always start a set strong yet finish weak, wearing out to soon and either butcher their own songs by the end or toning it down a few keys. Perry always seemed flawless, start 2 finish.
@MisterBoswell Freddie Mercury was vocal phenom in his own right, though. No use in running away from it. Tyler and Delp are just run of the mill voices.
@KarmicOmen Delp was certainly a fine technical singer, as was Tyler, by the way. I just find Delp's voice, as pleasant and listenable as it is, to be forgettable. Perry and Mercury have an unforgettable timbre, a unique identity, a captivating magic to their voices, that I don't hear with Delp, even though I like Boston. Then again, that's only my opinion.
@TheBarbon85 That is not an opinion, clearly you are not a vocalist. The general consensus is that they prefer Mercury's tone. Brad Delp has much more power in his voice which is a fact, there is no opinion in things like that. The main opinion factor of vocals is tone. And the only reason that is the general consensus is because more people have heard of Freddie than Delp. And that's because Freddie has far better promoters and producers. You need some serious enlightening.
@hermygagala Technically, Delp is a better vocalist, sure. But the general consensus is that Mercury has one of, if not the greatest voices in the history of rock. Of course it's public opinion. People don't care about technicality, they care about voices they like. Thom Yorke of Radiohead, who is in no way a technical vocalist or a mega seller, was ranked in Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Singers, and regularly appears high in public polls. So the "more people have heard of..." argument is lame.
The RHOF is an absolute joke. They have disgraced the genre with their picks for inductance into the "hallowed halls". As long as there's people who recognize this man's talent that's all that matters.
@KarmicOmen, yes I Agree this should be sent to the Rok and Roll Hall of Dame! What the fuck is TRNRHOF waiting for!! Steve is alive and Well give Him What He Deserves!! The Man is the Greatest singer...EVER. Steve Perry is The Voice.
The only Voice there is that You never gett tired of listening to!! The only voice that fills your heart with love! The only one who can call himself the best singer in the world! Sooo hoping he comes back soon! Love him with all my heart!
This video should be sent to the nominating committe for the RHOF - it cleary showcases why Steve Perry & Journey need to be inducted into its hallowed halls!
@KarmicOmen You're very welcome!. This was so well done and really does a fabulous job of highlighting Steve's voice and stage presence. They don't make 'em like him anymore - I don't think anyone past or present can sing live like him - he is truly one of a kind!
@KarmicOmen From the blog of voice coach Jeannette LoVetri: “Real singing is very direct. It hits you somewhere that you cannot forget. One absolute is that it is unique, memorable, and distinctive. Real singing allows the uniqueness of the individual voice, the intention of the lyrics as emotion and communication, and the musical components of melody, rhythm, tempo, key and accompaniment to meld into one cohesive whole that is more than the sum of its parts.”
Good job putting this together, It showcases Steve's vocal range perfectly, and of course the photos of him are to die for. He is one of the greatest voices and performers of all time. I appreciate that he felt it was time to stop touring, but I wish he would release some music. Miss that incredible voice it needs to come back
@cutlets29 Well he's good but I think Frankie J is top of the line when it comes to pipes, but they're about the same really. If you can strongest high pitch tones and hold it and then curl it your a pretty good damn singer. I can't do it on command like this guy, but sometimes I can sing with the best of them.
LOL... I gotta laugh @ 4:17 ....remembering & thinking.back in the late '70s.. how many of us burnt a finger/s while holding our lighters up, while Steve sang to us lol.... :-)
The way he climbs the vocal scale makes Mount Everest look like a cake walk. Above all else it is the emotive quality of his voice. Admittedly, he turns me into a crybaby (especially It's Just The Rain); a fact I am proud of, as I am also very proud of Steve!!
People grow up ... they always admit to being proud of Steve when they mature enough to appreciate his amazing ... no, truly phenomenal voice. THE VOICE! My son is 13 and I guess I taught him well, and early ... he loves Perry (and Floyd and Zeppelin and Morrison and R&B and Sinatra and Elvis and swing and big band)!

Man Perry is amazingly talented. Maybe he's not Ian Gillan with his voc range, but he's really an I mean REALLY close.
Kondzio717 6 months ago
You claim Steve Perry's range is 4-5 octaves in the description. But if his range is F#2-Bb5 thats only 3 plus octaves. Please Explain.
BTW Mother father is his greatest vocal performance in my opinion :D

Whule I agree with you about Freddie Mercury being a stellar vocalist, they didn't call Brad Delp "The Man with the Golden Voice" for nothing.
Please see description section of my "US Male Rock Singers" video ... with that kind of astounding capability, Brad Delp was hardly "run of the mill".
