Typically when dealing with a grotesque act of aggression against another human being, the response is to give legal protection to the victim, not just hope that the one doing it will always be good.

That's not how it works; you've been listening to propaganda. Sometimes it might be necessary to induce birth (in most cases the fetus is already dead), in order for the procedure to work without killing the mother. This is done only when necessary to protect the life of the mother. Every circumstance is different, and I would say that you or I have no right to interfere until we've been faced with such a devastating choice ourselves.
@jerico641 When a women does have to deliver her child early because their life is at risk (PIH, Diabetes, Ect) every effort is made to comfort that child as they naturally pass away or comfort them as a NICU team tries to keep that child alive. Neither option is or should be considered abortion. What I am referring to is the ruthless practice of late term abortion where the child is purposely killed either during or after delivery, usually in a very inhuman way.
I certainly don't consider the example you gave as abortion; it's obviously not. Babies don't just pop out ready to survive completely on their own. In fact there is very little difference between a 28 week "fetus" and a full term child.

in other words, if a woman finds out months before her due date that the baby will die almost immediately after she gives birth to it, she is now legally forced to go through this traumatic experience. She would also not be able to give birth vaginally in this case and would have to have a c section.

That's not how it works; you've been listening to propaganda. Sometimes it might be necessary to induce birth (in most cases the fetus is already dead), in order for the procedure to work without killing the mother. This is done only when necessary to protect the life of the mother. Every circumstance is different, and I would say that you or I have no right to interfere until we've been faced with such a devastating choice ourselves.

Neither option is or should be considered abortion. @CamillaCalamity An infant can't survive outside the body on it's own for years. I don't know any infant that could. They need to be cared for, kept warm, and fed or they will die. Babies don't just pop out ready to survive completely on their own. In fact there is very little difference between a 28 week "fetus" and a full term child.

Partial birth abortion is never done for the health of safety of the mother. The baby is delivered, all except for the head so that "technically" it isn't fully born yet, at which point they stick instruments into the back of the head and suck the brain out.
I challenge anyone to tell me how the "safety" or "health" of the mother would necessitate doing an abortion this way. What if the doc's hand slipped and the head/baby came out in tact? Would that hurt the mother? Obviously not.

@princessdisney26 health defects in these instances are very different; often the child's brain is underdeveloped, the lungs or heart fail and the child will probably die in infancy as a result, if not live into childhood under severe difficulty and pain. Obviously this isn't the case since the pregnancy can be terminated without killing the child just before the head emerges from the vaginal canal. No health benefit for the mother is derived from killing the child just before it is born.
The point: The ONLY purpose of the procedure is to result in a dead child. The "health exception" is an excuse meant to appeal to the gullible.
