Damn, this wasn't even the movie I was looking for, but I wish that I didnt watch this before I went to bed. Crazy ass bitch, how about u try and scare me when I have a shotgun at the ready and blow your skull into your brains!!! U want tht? I'll show u!!!
Holy shit! Wtf? The new one is like a billion times scarier! Jesus... I kept picturing the nasty Woman In Black standing in the corner of my room... Gross....
WTF IS THIS SHIT? if u want to see something really scary watch asian horror films; no on beats them at it. id recommend Shutter(thai), and the japanese versions of one missed call and the ring
I guess this would be scarier when you're not expecting it. I've seen this scene so many times since I was a child that it no longer has any effect on me.
Yeah I had the same thoughts watching this scene. In fact, SP would be even worse this because you can't cover your eyes, or even close them or anything. Since your completely paralyzed.
We watched this in English today after reading the book for the past month or so.....Every single child in the room was screaming for the next ten minutes....Two even started crying!
Ah...you know...I expected something scarier...I mean, the whole scene prepared my senses really well...I was ready to be scared shitless, and then...oh well...
That's Miss Lemon from the Poirot telly series. I know it is. And yet this scene is still terrifying. I can't get it out of my head. I haven't even seen The Woman in Black, just watching this in isolation, and I'm already terrified. Christ.
ONE small criticism of this scene is that it holds on the woman's face for a bit too long as it seems as if she isn't going to do anything more than be there ; should have cut from her ten seconds earlier & before she got AS close, then lastly on him, then more screaming with just a black screen for you to imagine what was happening to him
We watched this in English as well... It frightened the crap out of everyone, one person so much they flipped the desk over making everyone scream more. XD
When we went to see the play in London, our coach broke down and we were just stuck on it because nobody was allowed to leave. The teachers bought us chips, crisps & KitKats with their own money, and somebody had to pee in a bucket... We didn't get back until after midnight even though we were due back at 7pm, lmao.
I saw this movie last week and really...this scene scared the s*h*i*t out of me! And normally i dislike horror movies because they are silly (like paranormal activity & stuff) and i'm never scared of them!
buhuu but it's a good film and you really get into the scary mood! the music, the feelings and pictures will catch you.
(NOTE! i saw this movie in a dark basement totally alone. and got scared. just think about it if you are the sensitive type! keep that in mind! :)
I wacthed that in class we scearmed girls and boys the other class heard us it was scary my friend put her head in my lap I got her hair and covered my eyes with it
the london theatre performance scared the bejeebies outta me! i was sat there nearly crying at one point - stupid GCSE drama :L it was really good tho, definetly worth seeing, even if it did make me nearly poop myself XD xx
Going to see the production on Thursday for my GCSE I am pooing myself! We watched the experience on the website and I was just laughing at the reactions of my friends rather than watching. I am going to read the book too :0
Not exactly. The book has him in a prolonged fever, being haunted by visions of the ghost, but nothing this horrifying. This scene is way scarier than any contact he has with the ghost in the book. Ghost looks a lot younger than the one in the graveyard, must be implied that this was her when she was younger.
the overly done make-up and screeching is hysterical. you people need to see 'antichrist' or 'a tale of two sisters' or something. this is amateur and HILARIOUS.
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!! what a perfect movie to watch before my board exam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i would definitely remember all the things that I've studied!!!!
There is a short story that's just come out that is so scary, people are going crazy! Very few people can even finish it, even though it's only two pages long.
I saw this at the Fortune Theatre last night (15/11/10) and MY GOD I HYPERVENTILATED FOR A STRAIGHT HALF HOUR AFTERWARDS! Although it seems they left out the scene where the child talks to the man, which might be a benefit as this looks a bit silly. This might just be because of the time it was made, though.
you have to see the whole movie! you can't take the scene out of context and expect it to be scary. its all down to environment too - i have to say on a stormy evening in an old house in the sticks this was the only time as an adult I have been completely terrified by a film. it was great!
@lottie241292 It's not 'wrong' because it's not in the book. There's loads changed for Lord of the Rings to make it more effective as a film (instead of a book) but neither Tolkien or Peter Jackson's versions are 'wrong'. This is Nigel Kneale's ADAPTATION of the book, beefed up for TV and it's very effective. It doesn't replace the book, if you prefer that, it still exists for you to enjoy. I've never understood Susan Hill's reluctance toward this version, it must have sold lots of her books.
@lottie241292 Actually, it does happen in the book, but it is not described in detail. From my recollection, Arthur states that he once saw the woman in black hovering over his bed. It's dragged out in the movie. However, I do agree that it's wrong about the lead soldier.
@lottie241292 There is no specific description of this scene happening in the novel, but there is a suggestion of it when Arthur recalls how she visited him during the night and how his visions could have been attributed to the delirium caused by the sickness. I think that this scene was an effective addition to the movie.
I'm a big baby and usually cannot handle horrors, I've no idea why I decided to watch this. However, reading the comments and the one who said it sounds like she was constipated...made me laugh like crazy, it completely did.
Oh wow! I saw this when I was a child and it scared the Shit out of me and my younger brother. We had to awitch it off at the bed bit. Spent a long time trying to remember what the film was called. Weird to see it again as an adult, not quite as terrifying but close!!
we studied the book in English and then we watched the film. My reaction (scream and turning really white) to the scary bit freaked out my teacher and more girls than the film did. Beat that Woman In Black!!!!
Seeing this scene in context, on A&E, in the early/mid 90's, in the middle of the day (not even at night), without any expectations, I shat bricks. Never forget it. Creeped out the rest of the day. Great BBC production. Ranks highly among the best ghost movies ever.
@klaev So true. And I watched it late in the night, alone. The woman in black's last apparition in the movie, standing on water, will forever be in my mind. This particular scene here was uncalled for. I think it would have sufficed if she just had stood there motionless at the foot of his bed. But this meant to be the movie's climactic scene (or make you believe so).
I reckon there should be a remake of this film starring Matt Smith (The new Dr Who) as Mr Kidd as I think he would fit the role perfectly. Facial and voice wise he has got a little bit of a resemblece to the male actor here.
The actress who plays The Woman In Black in this film is the same woman who plays Miss Lemon in Agatha Christie's Poirot (his Secretary/PA). I've noticed in Poirot, she's quite attractive looking. But in this film and this particular scene, she looks different and frightening looking.
Everyone needs to watch this film from the very beginning to the very end and listen to story to know how scary this film and this particular scene is.
To all the people commenting this isn't scary, you're all probably watching it out of context, out of mood, in a bright house during the day. This is just one disjointed clip, watched seperate from the whole film.
Watch The Woman In Black from start to finish, alone at night, and you'll find it scary.
Watched as a whole, the creepy sound and music, lighting, and great performances slowly convey a feeling of creeping dread and the film will get right under your skin.
