I wouldn't say he was the best James Bond, I prefer him as Templar. That said, no actor has had more respect for Bond or the fans of the franchise, as Roger Moore. He's one of those true-to-life, actual gentlemen. At least in my opinion.
@klnine Agree totally. I'm old enough to have read the books before the movies came out and Sean Connery was the closest to Ian Flemming's description of Bond. He certainly wasn't 6ft 4 with blonde hair.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i never liked roger moore. he was such a queer and had one of those faces that basically says "i raped a boy when you weren't looking". he's so gross and yuck. is he dead yet? i'll throw a party when he does. YIPPEE!!
Roger Moore auditioned for the role of James Bond in 1961-62 vs Sean Connery (and others); my impression is that the director thought he looked too boyish and self-contained for the character. Connery looked and acted edgier and more aggresive. But this is perhaps speculation; I don't know all the details.
@vividwatch47 well, aside from the obvious (initials ST), there's a suggestion of an ancient code of honour and chivalry, from an old fashioned knight (the Knights Templar). In many stories I remember, Simon jumped in with both expensively shoen feet to help someone simply because they were being victimised / threatened / were in danger of losing a lot of money. This idea was later copied in The Equalizer.
Roger Moore was a good Saint, but not a very good James Bond. The latter character has to have a touch of the appearance of ruthlessness about him, and Roger lacked that. Sean Connery and Daniel Craig do not - and they are excellent portrayers of JB!
Roger was an excellent James Bond and even an even better Simon Templar. The two characters are so much alike. Lest we forget , when James Bond was being created Fleming had Roger in mind. Roger opted out to play Simon Templar as he saw the long term benefits in a TV hit in 1961(TV was still sort of new then). If Roger had played Bond in the early 60s he would've been stunning in the role and the best Bonds were made in the 60s when the Cold War was very relevant. Sean was stunning too.
@deepseadirt, do you have a source about Fleming thinking of Roger Moore as Bond when he was writing the books?
Fleming started writing JB books in 1953 and hadn't heard of Moore then. Some say Moore was ONE of those considered for Dr No, and Fleming had seen him playing The Saint and liked him for the role.... but Dr No was made and in the cinemas before the first ep of The Saint ever aired so that's not true either.
queen: no queen, that's a goof on my part. I meant when the producers were trying to cast the show, but I think Fleming may have championed Moore to be cast. But dont have me on record. Can't remember where I read this.
Hi, Deepseadirt. I have read both sets of books, albeit a long time ago. You miss my point - to wit, James Bond was a hardened killer, and not really a very nice guy! And Roger Moore looks far, far too pleasant - ie, not ruthless enough - for the role. The Saint was a mysterious and elusive figure, but certainly not a hardened killer, and Roger Moore is perfect there. BTW, I remember being somewhat disappointed with the series, that didna' show off that fey quality of The Saint.
@WeeWyllie exactly. I got all drooly over Simon as a small child but Connery forever has my Bond vote. When Rog took over, his stiff-necked sardonic charm just wasn't right for Bond.
@queenastilon - sorry but i disagree. sean connery was a boring, one-dimensional bond who had no personality. only my opinion of course but to my mind, roger moore did well to bring charm and humour to the role, although he could be serious as well.
Roger Moore should get a percentage for every blazer jacket I've bought. He's been my role model because for style and his humanity. I was too young for Connery so I grew up with Sir Roger as James Bond. I have greatly enjoyed watching him in his miriad roles because of the sense of humor and style he brings to them. May he live a long and happy life.
I'd be much obliged if someone would tell me who the band was that played the theme music. The sound has long intrigued me, and if there is a repertoire in this genre, I could get into all of it.
I was more of a fan of Roger Moore as Simon Templar than he was as Bond. I loved the Saint, though I have never seen the Black and White version of the show.
Roger Moore was actually considered for the role of Bond in Dr No but was unavailable because he was committed to this series. There was a carbon copy situation in the 1980s when the producers of Bond were unable to get Pierce Brosnan for The Living Daylights because he was committed to the Remington Steel TV series. But good things come to those who wait.
Roger Moore was the best choice for Simon Templar. I watched this tv series lately and want to buy the complete one. I have already The Avengers with Emma Peel and loved it!
Roger Moore played Simon Templar - in EVERY film role he did!! Patrick MacGoohan was originally sought after as Bond. Conery's style of walk got him the role as he crossed the car park after the audition. Orson Welles was the original actor they wanted as Auric Goldfinger - too expensive, but Gert Frobe was tremendous. THE best Bond/Villain package. What have we now, a blond, blue-eyed, big eared short-ass thug posing as a tall dark, debonair MI6 Agent a la Connery/Brosnan.......
Roger Moore is Simon Templar. Nobody has done it better. He was born to play this role just like Connery was born to play Bond and Damon was born to play Bourne.

Let's hear it for Edwin Astley, composer of this theme and music for countless other British series, including the legendary "Danger Man"/"Secret Agent."
Edwin Astley was The Who's Pete Townshend's father in law, and often did orchestral arrangements for his solo albums. He also composed the brassy opening for the opening title for "The Adventures Of Robin Hood" (majestic!).
This black & white opening was used from 1962 through 1965. When the series began color production in 1966 (it reached the U.S. in the spring of '67), the theme [and opening title] was revised and lengthened somewhat...

Looking for the name of a TV programme or possibly a film where a wedding dress features.
I have tried to find out what this scene was for over 30 years. A wedding dress in a tall glass case in a corner of a Victorian
old ladies room, she is sitting on a sofa and warns a young girl who is admiring the wedding dress, not to open the case .
But the girl does behind the old lady, and when the air gets inside the dress falls to pieces..
