Even the wonderful Ferrier sounds like an amateur compared to Flagstad ( and I absolutely love Ferrier!). Flagstad is so professional! And what a wonderful emotional touch! She feels what she sings (and vice versa). I've listen'd to hundreds of singers, yet none of Flagstad's qualities.
@achantus1 You are absolutely right in your very high praise, this recording is Kirsten Flagstad at the top of the tree. A staggering performance. I like your goodself love Kathleen Ferrier but I think the lovely Kathleen would under any & I mean any circumstances ever be described as an amateur. I do however know what you mean.
an extrordinarily pure and nobel voice.. One can not but be move by this combination of great music interpreted by one of the great voices of all time
Great. The much admired Kirsten Flagstad-an extraordinary voice and exceptionally gifted singer. Many of her Wagner roles have no equal to the day. But in this particular piece Haendel`s "Ombra mai fu" you may listen to M.Horne and K. Ferrier as well.
I must admit that I've never really paid must attention to Kirsten Flagstad. After this I will. I'm starting to understand. Better late than never, right? I study at the University of Oslo, and I know she died here, so now I guess I have to find out where she's buried and give here some flowers. She certainly deserves that.
@achantus1 If memory serves me correctly she was buried, at her own request in an unmarked grave, in Frogner Park where she gave many outdoor concerts during her career. Only her family and a few norwegian officials know the location.
@achantus1 Actually I was half right, she was indeed buried at her own request in an inmarked grave, but not in Frogner Park, in Vestre Gravlund cemetery in Oslo. You could write to her family or norwegian officials, if you wish to give her some flowers. It's worth a try, good luck.
@Whistlejocket Have a listen to Kirsten Singing Oh! Sleep why dost thou leave me. / G F Handel. It is almost unbearably beautiful. As is this great recording. Have a listen also To the great John McCormacks version of Oh! sleep.
@Whistlejocket I understand what you mean. There will never be a voice like Flagstad's; she is absolutely unique. There is a magic quality to her voice that I can'y define. And I 've never heard a version of Ombra may fu better than this.
The purest, most even, cleanest, most celestial and noble voice on record. We will never hear anything like this ever again. The best and biggest singerpoll of them all, CLASSICAL CD:s big one 1999, "100 greatest singers of the century", chose her above all other female voices, even Callas, Nilsson and Tebaldi. They were right.
And would add that nobody sings this particular piece better than her! I've listened to all performances of it here in youtube and can't find anything that can line up with this one.
@mariveneta I agree! There is absolutely no version of "Ombra mai fu" that is better than this. Even the version of the wonderful Jussi Bjørling was a great dissapointment! Flagstad has something I can only describe as pure MAGIC! And just a few years ago I was totally ignorant of Flagstad, though I study (at the University of Oslo) just a few miles from where she's buried. I'm ashamed!
When was this recorded?

@achantus1 - Good luck in discovering Ms. Flagstad. She's also known as one of the GREATEST, Wagnerian sopranos of her, or any other, age.
