Actually it is thought by many fans, that the Second Doctor had more adventures between "The War Games" and "Spearhead From Space" called Season 6b, it explains many things that occur later in the series. But nevertheless the 2nd Doctor was one of my fav's and I wish I had been around to see him as the Doctor.
you know for ages I thought the Patrick Troughton/ Jon Pertwee regeneration was half black and white then changed into colour like the wizard of oz.. its the start of spearhead edited on? Aww I feel cheated
@odinswolf1969 Sorry you feel cheated! I did have an all B&W version, but I thought the transformation to colour was more interesting. Not that I have anything against B&W.
what an idiot! Anyone who says something you don't like and you automatically call them a troll? That is beyond childish. And it is used by idiots who don't like any other opinion other then their own. And yes it is pretty stupid to not be able to tell the difference between a joke and a new fact being introduced. If your a kid, fair enough but most of the idiots who can't tell are in there 20's. That is more then old enough to tell the difference. rme
@sallyjosie Listen, sunshine. I wasn't born yesterday. You act like a troll, you don't have a real youtube account, you throw around childish insults instead of expressing a coherent, reasoned opinion, and I'm not the first to identify you as a troll. So, the floor is yours. Go ahead and explain your point of view in an intelligent, mature fashion. Go on. I don't block people for disagreeing with me, just for being offensive trolls. So, go ahead, prove me wrong. State your case. I'm waiting! ;-)
The Dr was obviously joking when he said he could regenerate 507 times. either some people are being a bunch of smart alecks or they are incredibly dumb. lol
@sallyjosie And I guess SOME PEOPLE are just sad trolls who don't have the stomach or brains to express or debate an opinion without resorting to personal abuse.
@penninefilms Yeah, I'm divided on that, because 'War Games' was such a good story, with great effects and music, that I'm sure they would have done a great job of the regeneration. Black and white would have added to the atmosphere of it. In colour, we had to wait until 1984 for a decent regeneration.
@outofthegreenmist I do agree on the 1984 one that was some thing good but I do like the third doctors regenerate in the plant of the spider the way de really died and the end has to be one of the most moving of all.
@penninefilms Yes, Pertwee's final moments were very moving, as you say, but I think they could have done better with the effects. I usually defend Doctor Who against accusations of bad effects and make allowances for the time in which the programme was made (before CGI, etc.), but I really do think they could have achieved better than they did, even in 1974. The Hartnell/Troughton regeneration was simple, yet effective.
@megazwatcher I don't think that's it. For one thing, it's the producers of the show who seem obsessed with regeneration. Everytime the Doctor bangs his knee this magical regenerative aura starts appearing. OK, I'm exaggerating, but anyway, they recently upped the limit of regenerations to something like 500! Thanks.
but anyway, the way the timelords could give extra regenerations as motivation suggests that possibly they are responsible for the limit, and with them gone and the doctor the only timelord left well...
@megazwatcher A figure of 507 was given by the 11th Doctor in the episode of Sarah-Jane which featured Jo Grant. As you say, fans are more or less making up the continuity themselves by suggesting that this is something to do with him being the last Time Lord.
the 11th Doctor responds to a question by saying he can regenerate "507" times.
Writer Russell T Davies explained in an interview with SFX that the line was not intended to be taken seriously and is instead a commentary. He insisted that the "thirteen lives" rule was too deeply entrenched in the viewer consciousness for his throwaway line to affect it
@megazwatcher If by research you mean reading boring sci-fi magazines, they you're right. My research was watching the programme. If one needs to read SFX in order to understand SJA (for kids), then there is something seriously wrong with RTD's writing. Maybe HE was lying? ;-)
could be as simple as "no time lord council no limits"
or as convoluted as "his half breed nature and or exposure to ???? during his travels results in extra lives"
or with the way river burned up her regenerations saving him, maybe they passed to him.
back to him being half human, maybe that's why his regens have been so erratic and difficult for himm as opposed to ramana who changed like putting on new clothes
@penninefilms That's what I believe the figure of 507 was about - it was an absurdly high figure designed to simply say to fans who want everything explained, 'The Doctor can have more than 13 lives, get over it and move on!' It would take 1000 years to verify the 507 figure, but if RTD had been more conservative and said 24 regenerations, he'd have to explain it. Raising the bar to an absurd figure, whether the Doctor was exaggerating or not, means the issue is now put to bed. If the series...
@penninefilms ...continues, there will be 14th, 15th Doctors, etc. Besides, you and I were originally discussing why the overuse of regeneration in the new series. Sadly, there's always a troll around (sallyjosie) to hijack the discussion and turn it into a tirade of personal abuse!
@megazwatcher It is a damn shame in billions of ways, that we never got a regeneration scene from Pat to Jon in the War Games still never mind we can enjoy these fanmade 2nd to 3rd regeneration vids.
It is abloody typical shame, that we did not see the second doctor regenerate on screen at the end of the war games. I suppose it was the case, that noboby really knew whether dr who would be brought back the following year with Jon Pertwee. I would have liked to have, had Patrick Troughton stay on as the doctor, for two more seasons at least. The first two coluor seasons 7 &8, I imagine if Pat had stayed on longer we would have still got the Master as a villain which would have been good.
@rojblake82 I'm not sure of the exact chronology, but I think they had picked Pertwee by the time this was shown, but hadn't done so when it was filmed. Can't remember where I read that, so you might like to check! It's interesting to speculate what colour 70's adventures may have been like with Troughton, or even with Pertwee's Doctor and Jamie and Zoe as companions, as was supposedly under consideration. However, I don't think Troughton wanted to continue, and a reboot was needed. Thanks.
@rojblake82 One more thing, an extended Troughton tenure would've meant we didn't get the magnificent 'War Games', plus I like to think of the Master as a regenerated War Chief from that particular story!

Is it me or does Pertwee and Troughton look alike?

@swordseye2 There certainly was a similarity which I consciously emphasised by carefully selecting images to morph between.
