I Beleve the ""SWITCH" is the Door opening control. They were stopping in a Bridge Plate station and IF the engineer hit the door Opening switch--ALL car doors would open, with the possibility of people walking Out to NO Platform or Bridge plates on the named cars. When the engineer Turned OFF His SWITCH --the conductors could control Each car door opening Independantly to ensure ONLY the doors with Bridge plates Opened By separate Car controls

Those are both M2s. The single M1 that was sitting there a long time ago was officially scrapped. Those M2s are 8814 and 8655(?)-barcar)

Bridgeplates are for reaching the platform when there is track work.
