I've been using the :F with a small "f" for years, :f

It usually represents a kind of embarrassed admittance to something ("well, i didn't think of that :f"), or a shy/careful remark ("that's not gonna help me now :f"). I think most people understand these intuitively, it's interesting.

@Evid3nc3 Yes but who is actually making these faces anyway? The point is to make it expressive. A snake sticking its tongue out is more mischievous and bad intentioned then a regular tongue stick. That's the only reason I brought it up- because the message behind it differs.

Now I'm wondering what all the :F in my past really meant. Maybe I could have avoided some deaths in online games if I knew everyone was playing dumb instead of being mischievous.

As Kabitu insightfully pointed out, I think usability and emotional recognizability comes into play in emoticon creation. I.e. when are you really going to need emoticons for a snake sticking its tongue out and a serious guy with a monobrow unless you are flooding your conversation with needless emoticons? I think a good emoticon captures an emotion in a way that accentuates pure text and makes a statement more expressive.
