dude , i realize you posted this video 4 years ago , and i am sad i didnt run across it sooner than today. That being said , I think that "Tormato" is a very highly UNDERATED lp , and is actually my second favorite YES lp after " Going for the one" ...I think the work you did to learn the bass lines for this song are incredible........Keep your chops up and you will go far if you havent already ....Cheer's from a freezing Tulsa , Oklahoma.........keep in touch ,,Laney'
This is one of my all-time favorite YES songs, which always seems to be molded around a brilliant Squire solo. '-) I saw this performed live in 1978 after Tormato was released and have loved it since. It's a shame Chris doesn't play this on stage more often - it's fantastic - and you've nailed it once again. GREAT work!
Super nice job, Miquel. This is the sort of playing that makes me wonder why some bassists think they need more than 4 strings. I don't suppose there's a tab of this floating around somewhere? And wouldn't it be cool for the current Yes lineup to bring this one back? I've always felt Chris' work here was a progenitor to what he did on Drama.
@yeshead I have never seen a tab for this song yet. Btw, the closing track of the new album, called "Into the Storm" is somewhat reminiscent of this particular bass sound. I would sure love the would play it live (as well as the whole of Silent Wings, of course)!
@miguelbass Yeah, "Into the Storm" does sound a lot like the rock jam part of this song. The current lineup did play "ItS" at the last show on the tour that just ended, so I'm guessing it'll be in the set the next time they come around. Hopefully with "Silent Wings" as well! And you have a great ear to figure out these parts. Sometimes the notes blur together and it's not always easy to get them exactly right.
fantastic job...nailed it completely....and HOW MUCH FUN can you have playing a bassline? reminds me of playing along with a killer jameson Line or geddy Line... so fun. Gret job brother..pleasure watchin this...really. Thanks
The Ric is my fav bass. Best tone ever. You have captured the essence and tone of the mighty Fish. Rick Wakeman once theorized (Hoped, actually) that Yes would continue for generations, each musician being replaced, much like an orchestra. I wish nothing but health and long life to Chris Squire, but if someone was needed to "man the Ric"...you would be on a very short list of choices. Bravo!
some of chris's best work can be found on tormato especially this song, ive only just started getting into bass playing and to be able to play on the silent wings of freedom like this is definitely something to aim towards and i'll keep coming back to this video until i get there, efew years maybe?!
miguel i admire your passion..my dream was to play bass like you.now i'm older and time has me do other things.so i watch you with the same happiness i would have playing thoughs songs...thanks very much...gio
@MysteryClown000 Sometimes you have strange questions :) I have been thinking of The Remembering. Maybe because it was 2 summers ago that I did all that big production in my old room, with the projector... about that time I was starting to read Yogananda. If you don't mind... I will pick that one!
@ivanmunoz14 Ivan - the RM (Rose Morris) 1999 was the designation of the 4001 bass import version to the UK at the time. Rose Morris was the official dealer, so technically the bass should be similar to the 4001S (mono version of the 4001). More details can be found at specific forums like "rickresource" - which I subscribe and recommend.
@pecanpie100 Hi - At the time I had a Guitar Rig demo and I used their "Auto filter". As I didn't use a harmonizer, instead I used a Chorus that was part of guitar rig too. I can suggest trying that blend with the material you have available (ex Boss FT-2 and CE-3)
When I started listening to YES, at 14, I was (and still I am!) amazed by Chris Squire's bass playing and sound. For some reason, some years after, I finally decided to express music by playing drums. But Squire was about to 'seduce me' into playing the bass guitar! Besides all that, I may be repetitive (I gave the same comment in another clip), but Miguel, your work is absolutely great!!!! I have found myself listening to your covers more than to the original YES recordings!!!
@carlesgom That's a great about Chris playing... it's appealing even to those who don't have bass as main instrument or even don't play any instrument. Thank you very much for your kind comments.
o men! you are awesome great!, i love this one. if i only hear it, i can say its only a Chris Squire practice, or a exctract of sound of the real song.
SO INCREDIBLE!
i have one question, do you get the tab for some where? or you get it hearing the song? im looking for something to can play it...
@sapomusaburres Hi. Thank you very much for your comments. I really take all things by ear. It takes (for this song especially) some days to practice it a lot and get it all to memory. Eventually next time I try to play it it will take less :))
Should be great if you play Future Time/Rejoice from Tormato, well I could say the same for about 50 other YES songs you have not posted here yet! :-)
YES should pay you some fee for marketing their music, as you do it SO WELL!!! Tormato was not among my favorite albums, but after listening to you playing here I've bought Tormato, and I must say I love it. I love the sounds/effects Chris uses through the whole album.
You astonish me ! ! ! As I reset my dropped jaw I can only marvel at your incredible talent. Touch and tone are flawless. Amazing ! Do make this instrument your love and career. You must ! You play music, not just notes. I salute you and thank you for this magnificent presentation.
I remember Chris Squire using this bass sound on the Tormato album. Can you tell me how its done? I can only guess that the Rickenbaker bass is trebly enough to work with a phase shifter. You sound is dead on so you must have a good idea.
@pschroeter1 It's written somewhere that it was a Mutron III envelope filter. I used an envelope filter plugin along with a chorus. It's fairly close. I recently got a Boss FT-2 which is really good and resembles the Mutron in some ways.
This is one of Yes's best instrumental arrangements and you are awesome on Chris's part! In fact, I'd go see you play before I'd go see the band (...these days). Keep up the great work!
Thanks :) btw I play live with two bands and do some other work, but not much connected with this kind of music... I'll post something if something interesting will turn up!
miguel, It saddens me that I've owned three of those 1000 basses, and I foolishly sold every one of them before they became high value. And, regardless of value, they are so wonderful that I can't imagine what i was thinking!!!!
Watching you play that reminds me that Chris Squire is the only bassist I forgive for using a pick. He's such a guitarist in a bassist's body ;) Great job and what a tribute to such an amazingly talented band.
p.s. Nice Squire sig bass! I only have a maple 4003 myself, but love its unique sound.
Thank you very much for the kind words. I understand your "guitarrist" compliment though I prefer the term "lead bass" that other apply :)) Nevertheless I understood. Cheers.
Absolutely great Squire and Yes are my fav.. never thought I'd see some other player plays his way .. esp.. his sound .. WOW pls take a look at my works :D
Thank you, in fact I am trying to assemble a real mutron (clone) pedal, cause I used I demo version of guitar rig to get the sound but I would like to have such an effect in a pedal.
Wow! That's fricking great! I've never seen a bass player duplicate that "harmonized Rickenbacker" sound as good as you do! You have the licks down pat and your neck positioning is absolutely perfect! How long have you been playing? I would love to be a friend. What do you say?
No, come to America! You can use my Squire, too! I liked how you always nailed the open notes while playing up high. Is this the toughest Squire jam to play in your opinion?
The timing is tricky... I had to play it countless times to have it memorized, that's the toughest part - especially the intro, where those open notes occur. There are other tough passages, not sure which one is the hardest. Sound Chaser comes to mind... but I haven't tried seriously yet :) Thanks!
Yeah, this cool but it doesn't quite sync up at times- there at moments when Squire is hitting the open E, i believe, during the main riff and the player here isn't- and vice versa- the player picks the open E when squire isn't and the player's open E is inaudible at those moments. I'm interested to check out the others though.
And one more note. This guy can play, thats obvious and has learned the song well. And, nice bass, I have one just like it. #800. I had Jon, Chris, Steve, Rick and Alan sign mine at The Paramount Theatre in Seattle...
Great performance yes,....too bad its Chris and not the guy on the video. I'm not buying for a second this guy can reproduce the EXACT sound Chris had in the studio in his bedroom. You are not hearing this guy play!! Sorry. I know this song too well.....
Hello! I used a Guitar Rig demo, I think it was version 2. It had the autofilter effect which is the closest I got to the original Mutron pedal that was used. It works as an envelope filter. Then I blended it with a Chorus effect also from the same software. Thanks.
I just connect the bass to the sansamp bass driver DI. In this case the fx were made by plugins, but the sound is really thanks to the sansamp. Thanks for watching!
What is next?
Just had another listen to this!!! Great stuff.
You have the gift my friend. cheers....

I now find that Howe and Wakeman over did it. Total overkill for me.
Still great stuff.

Excellent. I've been a big fan of this track since it first came out and you have it completely covered.
Great to see this level of playing is still valued.

I think he will take that as a compliment :)

what effects are you using?
OrganDonor00 2 years ago
Hello! I used a Guitar Rig demo, I think it was version 2. It had the autofilter effect which is the closest I got to the original Mutron pedal that was used. It works as an envelope filter. Then I blended it with a Chorus effect also from the same software. Thanks.

That was fantastic. !!!! Half way through I noticed you have a Squire bass ! It sound great and you play great.
How do you get that sound ???? What are you doing to get that amazing Squire sound ?
jmorrell22 2 years ago
I just connect the bass to the sansamp bass driver DI. In this case the fx were made by plugins, but the sound is really thanks to the sansamp. Thanks for watching!

what are you using to get the Squire ´wah´ effect , I´m sure you know what I mean.Or is that sound inherent in the guitar itself ? thanks
