  • Up! Down! Up! Down! Chu! Chu! Hey!

  • Anime is groovy.

  • Wow....wow! This is what got me into anime so many years ago. I was only 8 when I seen this, and I fell in love with anime from that point on. Yet I never paid attention to the names of the animes, and it took me 7 years to find Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer and Galaxy Express 999.

  • God, what happened to you sci fi channel? You used to be cool. Why are you misspelling your name now? Why is half of your programming not even sci fi? Why do I keep coming back to rewatch this vid? Am I all out of pepsi yet? WE ALL GONNA DIE!!!

  • Space Michael is in danger!

  • I'm getting motion sickness from all that camera work.

  • Has anyone been able to find her Apollo Smile: Love, Kisses and Grenades album?

  • @captainsmithee I've been trying to find Love Kisses and Grenades too but have had my luck - I've got Wrecking ball though if that's any help :)

  • Wow, the Sci-Fi channel used to be AWESOME ... now they're the Syfy channel. Still cheesy, but no longer in a good way.

  • Heh... I just read her comic and decided to check out this video...

  • It's almost iconic the way she says "Groovy~!"

    And "FOUNTAIN SQUAAARE~ :D"

  • Back in the beautiful days of SciFi Channel. They really should have hired her as an anime host and kept their Saturday Anime block. Once again the powers that be screw their product instead of making it better. I never thought I would miss the 90's so much.

  • I had the second half of Beautiful Dreamer taped from this week of anime, but I would stop recording during the commercial breaks. I could never remember this girl's name

  • ZOMG, she's drop-dead gorgeous! This takes me back to the glory days of the Scifi Channel and anime in general. Apollo Smile is a great performer, even though she doesn't do this type of thing anymore :(

I missed Anime '98. Thanks for uploading this gem!

  • @cuteulala1 how right you are. How right you are.

  • she looks like ulala too

  • Interesting that Apollo Smile is talking about the Movie beautiful dreamer...lol

Beautiful Dreamer has been out of print for years, and the Urusei Yatsura dvds are going out of print this year.....sigh :(

  • ULALA!!!

  • vsvdsdvsddsffds

  • That camera guy is havin' fun with all of those wacky angles.

  • this reminds me of how shit the 90s were

  • @UltraNerdsOfTheWorld Thats because you was gay and blind at that time

  • Makes me wonder what she think about Ani- uh, "Japanimation" nowadays.

  • @geekgo4 Apollosmile im sure is as perminant fan of anime might not acti it now maby but im sure she loves it its her thing always was and alkways is shes 44 years old happy birthday apollo 2 months ago hehe

  • I've been looking for this for ages. Thank you so much for uploading this.

  • Ulala!!

  • Wow. I met this woman Long ago in a Galaxy Far, far away.... I met her in Toronto in 1999 during a Sci-fi/Comic book/ Anime convention. She was AWSOME!! Great Spirit lovely personality. The Spandex was HOT!! I saw her panel and got pictures online somewhere. This look exactly how she looked in this video when I met her. I still have a mini-poster and buttons that where given out by her table. I really wanted the comic book that apparently sold out too quickly.

  • Whatever happened to her aanyway?

  • Sigh. I miss this time. So fucking much.

  • My understanding is that she stepped away from her "live anime girl" character to try to broaden her range as a musician and voice actor, and then just retired from performing altogether-perhaps settling down to get married and have kids. She is currently an instructor at a dance academy in Connectitut. While I know it will never happen, it would be beyond awesome if Sy-Fy were to host a weeklong anime festival and convince her to step back into live anime girl mode to host it again.

  • @dkupke It would be awesome if Sy-FY was to show anime again altogether instead of those cheesey SY-FY original movies.

I doubt that she would come back though.

  • "GROOVY!"

    -___- *sigh*

  • @icarus313 Evil Dead?

  • She is STILL better than MOST TV stars.

  • this is embarrassing to watch

  • DAT ASS

  • I met her at a con or 2, very nice gal! so sweet. ^__^ thanks for sharing!

  • LOL she acts just like Ulala too!

everything she says sounds like one of Ulala's Swinging Reports

  • Lord, I remember this. I was in high school at the time, and anime was still so new and weird to me. Thanks for posting.

  • its nice to see apollo smile on youtube i know her for a long time now im one of her fans. i met her many times but the first time was in a stor called Anime Crash here in new york city she gave me a picture of her and then autograph it for me after that i seen her in comic conventions. She is really a sweet heart in person thanks for puting this up.

i have her music and her first comic book it came with the music she also autograph it as well if u were to see her in person u would love her.

  • can u believe shes 30 in this video

  • @Stargrave

Serious? Wow. She looks like she's 19.

  • I first met her at Dragon-con in 1998. She was awesome!!!!

  • She's... so... CUTE!!

  • thk dude plzz add more!!

  • @Axelrlz i remember this video when it came on i think it was the weekday.

  • Thanks for the upload! I still have a couple of these spots on VHS myself. Apollo was interesting and I miss her work. Now if only I could find a copy of her "Love, Kisses & Grenades" album.

  • holy shit! i remember this. this program is what got me into anime... was this the one that showed iria zeiram the animation?

  • Apollo Smile = Ulala from Space Channel 5 =D

  • I know Apollo divorced her husband but then she seemed to disappear...Where is she now?

  • I meet Apollo Smiles at Dragon Con in 1995 and 1998. She was a very nice person. As a fan I miss her. I have post card from her. Thank you share this video.

  • If you have heard or played space channel 5 before, the live action anime girl, Apollo Smile, is Ulala's voice in the video game.

  • It sort of frightens me how well I remember this, considering that it was 12 years ago.

  • Yeah, and I was only 1 year old.

  • AHHHH MY DANCE TEACHER. LOL YEAH I GO TO THE DANCE CORNER TOOO. hey suz devil lol ik who u are but im not gonna say ur real name lol

  • Wow, i haven't seen her in over 10 years. She use to attend cons all over the NYC area. Can't believe she's 42 now and she doesn't look it. I guess she retired her Apollo character when anime exploded during this decade. Thanks for the video and allowing me to relive some skintight memory.:)

  • Met her at a con is 1997 where I was running back to my room and did not see her around the corner. Got an accidental handful of that chest... Good memories!

  • That white suit doesn't leave much to the imagination.

  • OMG THIS IS MY DANCE TEACHERR!! hahahaha here at the dance corner in connecticut! omgg, apollo smile, gotta love herr!!<3

  • mine too.

  • @littlesuzdevil67 So I've read! Pretty unexpected!

  • @littlesuzdevil67 Well, if you ever see her again, ask if she has ever considered reviving her Space Channel 5 character for the WII.

  • @dkupke Something tells me she would be more than happy to do so, but unfortunately that's not really her decision to make (it's SEGA's).

That, and a Part 3 would need to somehow replace Space Michael, which would be quite awkward and slightly depressing. :(

  • @SailorTaurus Not even really Sega's anymore-Nintendo's since Nintendo owns all of Sega's titles today. But due to all the licensing and other legal matters that would have to take place, it is highly unlikely. A pity, as a new Space Channel 5 would fit in perfectly with the motion based video games of today.

  • @littlesuzdevil67

If you kids misbehave, does she bust out the kung fu? Ha ha ha. Just kidding.

  • she's hot

  • I used to be pretty good friends with her on the con circuit. Super nice lady, but she dropped off the face of the planet back in 2002 and I haven't seen her since. Pity, because I am really curious what she's up to. I heard she's become a dance instructor or something up in Connecticut.

  • YES INDEED SHE IS!

  • LOL! Awesome! Hey, tell her "Drew from New Hampshire" says hi. If she doesn't remember, call me "Purrr-boy". She should understand that reference.

  • @30secondstodrew i will but idk if we were suppose to know lol. im guessing she came to a small town in ct to get away from the madness and if we knew that might ruin things...

  • Holy crap I hate the director for this. STOP MOVING THE CAMERA! Can anyone else believe she was already in her 30's here?

  • Apollo is the Choreographer for the Musical my school is doing. It also turns out that she went to prom with my dad... it's a small world.

  • hey alex.

  • OMG I love Apollo Smile

  • live action Ulala :3

  • OMG Thank you finding this! This pretty girl and this Anime week block was how I first discovered anime back when I was wee lad in 98!

Did Sci-Fi channel show any other anime movies/OVAs back then?

  • i'm pretty sure they showed Vampire Hunter D, 8 Man After, Demon CIty Shinjuku and a few others too. Maybe Record of Lodoss War? It's been a while!

  • @scotttopic you are correct on that list! a few of the others are Dominion: tank police, project ako, Lensman, odin: photon space sailor starlight, cashan robot hunter, E.y.e.s of mars, lily cat, robot carnival, akira... i could go on and on! It is so good to see this again. I think this was the last time they did the anime week. Now they have animonday and it is just not the same. Thanks for posting this, you made my day.

  • @scotttopic I do remember them showing both of the Galaxy Express 999 movies, Beautiful Dreamer, and I am fairly sure Vampire Hunter D, but don't quote me on it

  • @scotttopic

Well, there is one anime I say on that week in 1998, Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture. I have seen it, but it was mostly edited and censored, mostly because of Mai Shiranui. At least I got the DVD now, so, no worries. ;)

  • @scotttopic venus wars, dominion tank police, Green Legend Ran, akira, Galaxy Express 999....a few others

  • @scotttopic they did thats when i first saw vampire hunter d and 8 man after them was the days

  • @LelouchX77

After Sci-fi showed this they actually started doing more anime. It was called Animonday. Apollo Smile is a sweet girl. I use to write to her. I bought her comics.

  • @LelouchX77 omfg me too, I knew I first saw it when i was little staying over at my sisters house but all i remembered was a girl in spandex telling me about galaxy express 999 (the first anime i ever saw). I've looked before trying to find out who she was and what network it was on and today I finally found out. I'm pretty happy.

  • If SEGA decides to make another Space Channel 5, I hope Apollo Smile reprises her role as Ulala. I can't imagine anyone else voicing her.

  • Yeah, we all know Ms Smile wants to voice Ulala again just as much as we want another SC5 game.

  • I loved Apollo too. She was a great martial artist, very cool & so sweet. I'm sure she still is. OnslaughtJJB, I've seen her albums on ebay from time to time.

Apollo, if you read this sweetheart, you were adored & are very much missed.

Scottopic, thanks so much for uploading this!!!

  • I used to talk to her a lot years go but I have not heard from her in years.

  • God I loved Apollo Smile, got her first album, but I can't find her albums Love Kisses and Grenades and Wrecking Ball anywhere, can someone help?

Thanks for uploading the video :)
