It"s skin will die if its all the time under water (it will peel off, blood circulation will stop etc... Also the tank will poison it.. For a turtle this size you will need at least a 200G terrarium (not aquarium) with 40% dry land. In a small tank like that it can get diseases, liver and stomach malfunctions etc. And Turtle dock are shit! Build an island from rocks, stones. And you will need lots of big leaf plants for this specific turtle. Plants remove nitrates
And if you have a special heat lamp then it should be only over the island (dry land). And it should heat only half of the island, if you don't want to burn it. As for the water get a heater that you can place under rocks and gravel, because these turtles can break the glass heaters, and it can hurt itself with it. Also for a this size turtle you WILL NEED a water canister, and get only the right size for the amounts of gallons that you have, because they like swamps, or stagnant water the most.
So fast flowing water is not good, but you still need a top notch filtration, so a filter is not enough, you will need a NOT low quality canister. And as I said big leaf plants. As for it's food It is important to give a variety of food each weak! You have to switch day to day, that is the healthiest. It will need for a healthy life style fish (alive is better, they can sharpen their natural instinct, mammal, bird meat (no spices, or flavoring, it cant digest it right), and for vitamins etc.
get turtle pallets, and it is recommended to give them beef or pork liver sometimes (in a bowl, not in their water)... Keeping a snapper healthy is not cheap.. It WILL cost around $60-100 a month. I have one, and I got 5 books on how to keep a snapper!!! And I asked in the LA zoo, and local terrariums. My terrarium setup was $600. I got the rocks from the Sierra Madre mountains, and the different gravel from stores. If I would have bought the rocks, My setup would have been $1000-1200..
Also if you collect rocks, only get the ones without algae, and from higher mountains, far from the city, and only from small snow water streams. preferably not from a forest, (pine forests are ok). And when you are home first wash them with water and chlorine, after then wash it at least 3 times under fresh water, and after then boil them, because you don't want to put any bacteria or virus in your terrarium.

Go to bait shop for your turtle food it is way more healthier than buying those crap ass gold fish from the pet shop . Live Fish bait like kellies minos shiners sometimes sand worms and shit Like that.
mine is medium size i got him about a yer ago from my freind he breids them and quik tip they dont alwys wna swim so not to much h20 i put malch in the corner of the tan with my solar lamp and i gotta 35 gllon
Taking animals from the wild is illegal in my country. I'm surprised people are so blasé about it in the USA/Canada. It's good you released him, though.
Nice video! :) I have a turtle that is about 2 and a half years old just a tiny bit smaller than your snapper, and I don't have a tank this big...Its more a smaller one, like for goldfish. He totally fits the tank But he can't really swim around to much because the tank is not that long. I also don't fill the water up as high as yours in the video. Should I buy the kind of tank you have? Or should I just keep mine?
so i got a common baby snapping turtle and im going to hold on to him for awhile, how often do you feed him? and how small did you first get him and how often did you feed him? cuz i really want to make sure he survives
@coutterboy I just fed him once a day, they will eat about as much as you can give them so you want to make sure not to overfeed them. Mine was a hatchling when I found him, they grow relatively fast, but a 29 gal (what mine is) will last them at least 3 years. I let mine go soon after this because he had already outgrown the tank. They are very hardy creatures though, and usually have no problem adapting to captivity. Also its good to vary their diet with crickets, minnows, and turtle pellets.
@parisauburn just keep fish in the tank always and feed them fish food. That way turtle doesn't need pellets. I never fed mine pellets and he is perfectly healthy.Best way to feed him is to watch his underbelly. When he's looking skinny get him lots of fish. If he's looking fat he can go awhile without!
@thefishkeeper100 if u want a aggresive pet u could get a aligator snapping turtal they camoflog them slef as a rock nd wat for the gold fish to swimm close nd bam they dont gack around he gobbles the up and sorry about my spellin i have a spelling waver :( but yea their cool look em up :)
@TheFishKeeper100 I ave an alligator snapper and they are very expensive and very agressive, one time i got the tip of my thumb taken off and another time i got my pinky dislocated buy him
Can i order snapping turtles? I live in sweden and i rly want a turtle and i like aggresive pets, and snapping turtles looks like the only aggresive, strong one,was wondering if i can order it in my local pet store if so how much do they cost? If u know any other cool turtles plz reply and maby tell me the price if u know. i have a 250-260 litre tank whit a fluval 206 filter and 2 air pumps.
I just fed him turtle food sticks, goldfish, and some crickets. You need a pretty big tank if your planning on keeping a snapper for a while, that tank was really too small for that fella at the time of the video. Might be best just to build an enclosure outside if you have the room and money. They are very easy to take care of though and you can find them in streams all over the place in the East. I'm sure if you did some Google work you can get all the info you could ever want.
@krossellwright wanna ship it to lousisana lol, i have 50 snapping turtle eggs i just start trying to hatch , im thinking about starting a snapper pond something to do with my pair time
nicely done sir.. how long did you keep him? i am trying to keep a hatchling for a few years. hopefully until about the size of this one. nice tank and war eagle.
I had him from a hatchling for probably about three or four years, there extremely easy to keep. Just don't keep anything smaller than him in there or it could dissappear. I also had a few smaller Stripe-necked musk turtles in the tank with him at one time but he decapitated one of them and I had to remove the others before it was too late for them as well. WAR EAGLE!!!!!
They like to eat fish mice (doesnt have to be alive) and pork meat some veggies other small turtles..(i dont recommned) and go online and you can find some...
