Not any direct hits on DDG-8 but a boat load of hits by shrapnel, holes in the radar and life rafts and some stuck in the aluminum superstructure port and starboard.
Strange; this was 19 Dec 1967 when they shot at these ships, and 19 Dec 1972 when the Goldsborough took a hit off N Vietnam. Coincidence I'm sure, but
kkk What are u shooting?? even Washington empty ammo NVA still alive!!! Without Army land on the beach and keep fight like that will make your economy go bad. If you test gun, I get no ideas, BUT to win in the war without GI, Army landing (ex:Normandy) then AMERICAN NEVER WIN IN VIETNAM
OR USED antomic bombs to win like (JAPAN 1945) American smart but, Why don't they do LANDING AND ATTACK LIKE INCHEON 1950 IN KOREA??? Dirty history with big military in Vietnam and 1975 South Vietnam and American + allies LOST FOR VC! shame history! American need to clean up that Vietnamese communist shit. I can't stand to see they come to US and shake hand with the Presidents!!! USA shaked hand with enemy VC!
USS Newport News CA-148 - The Gray Ghost From the East Coast - was the largest Heavy Cruiser ever built with the fastest big guns ever put to sea. She was a pleasure to serve on.
My grandfather was steering that ship during that. He said "You have no idea how hard it is to go left when you want to turn right." Dan Elwell was his name.
That was a neat video! My step dad was on the LYNDE MCCORMICK in the early 90's till it was decommissioned. I got to go on the tiger cruise with him and my mom when I was 9 or 10. Definitely something I'll never forget!
Nice footage, but it doesn't show how intense it could get. That would have been a slow day at the office on Operation Sea Dragon. During one engagement, we took 200 near misses in under one hour.
@phillippibeard .....Nice work...thanks for your service. Was just in contact with the skipper of the BB 61...USS Iowa sending him some stuff for the Iowa museum. My grand dad was on the first Iowa..BB4. and his name was on the BB 61. Nice shooting guys..my vids are under PTCOMMANDER1.
Great Video. My Dad, Robert White was a boilerman on that ship that day. I have some great pics from the McCormic but this is the first video footage I've seen.

Can you post a pic of your dad, I remember hanging out in the br and I think it was Rob. I was a boatswains mate and my nickname was Ski, ask your dad if he remembers me and my pals Ronny Walker and Jimmy Johnson
NVA in this case has nothing to do with the DDR. It stands for North Vietnamese Army. I really don't think that a US heavy cruiser would have much interest in being in DDR waters. That was left to the Bundesmarine.
Nice video, bud. USS Hoel DDG-13 here. We opped with the Newport News a few times on the gunline. She always impressed the hell out of us little destroyer types. We never got hit either, but we were with the Goldsborough when she caught one. We were there when you had the explosion in the after gun turret. We heard you lost 22 men. I could be wrong but pretty sure that was you guys.
Thanks for the reply. We didn't have an explosion in the after gun mount but wore out the rifiling in the barrel causing rounds to go off premature, spent 3 weeks in Subic getting regunned.
My Other Car Is A Heavy Cruiser -- that's awesome. I need a bumper sticker like that. Great video, thanks for posting. Don't let assholes try to make you feel bad for fighting in Vietnam.
I would love to see one of these little weiny bastards say this to any of my chiefs, you'd be choking out those comments out the holes in your necks, god knows I would smash you.
To smukai2----Your parents should have drowned you at birth you ungratefull little sod. From ex HMAS Perth sailor (DDG 38). I was on Perth under exactly the same circumstances with Newport News, except we were hit. Any video of that.
