Alfred Jarry is very well-known in France. His play Ubu Roi can be found in school textbooks, and it's very common to study parts of it in middle school. He is radical and absurd, but really not that obscure.
What an amazing movie. Oakley Hall III is one of those guys. We should know more about him and his work. Bill Rose is a master story teller. Many thanks!!!
ok for some reason it keeps stopping at 34:29. I've tried four times to watch this documentary to no avail. I hope whoever comes after me has better luck =/
Wow, that was a really interesting documentary. I'd never heard of him before today. Too bad no one was able to handle his brain injury properly from the get-go.
I was there for the premiere of this film at Cinequest, and it was by far one of the most amazing experiences I have every had. To see Oakley himself and talk with the director, Bill Rose. Absolutely stunning and left me filled with emotions. I am so happy to see the film get out there!!!
I think one of the things that astounds all of us who were involved in the events covered in this amazing documentary is how cogently and sensitively Bill Rose was able to lay out all that occurred. I hope the massive affection and respect we all had (and have) for Oakley really comes across here as well. And the story's not over - I'm currently scheduled to appear in a January 2010 production of Oakley's adaptation of Jarry's UBU ROI in Albany, NY, directed by the man himself.
I saw this movie at the Ashland Independent Film Festival 3 or 4 years ago, and it has stayed with me ever since. Lovely, touching, a little haunting. Do yourself a favor and watch it.
I love this documentary, and I love both Oakleys. RIP, old soul.
Does anyone know where I can find his plays? They are mysteriously elusive.
