My ex husband was very abusive and then kidnapped my daughter and fled for over a year. Even after they found him after hurting another child!! They wanted him to still have visitation and contact with my daughter. She is severely traumatized and I am flabbergasted by the court system.

I know what I'm about to say is gonna be unpopular, but...there are a substantial number of women who will make up stories to get custody of the children. Women who suffer the abuse throughout their marriage and then abruptly find the courage during their divorce to say what needs to be said are hard to distinguish from the women who make shit up to get custody. :(

Why didnt the mother ask the daughter to call the police, right after the abuse, call 911 with the cell phone, so they could test her body? Thy is all very confusing. OK. Abuse at anyone's hands -- mother or father -- is tragic. But now we see the consequences of children being manipulated by parents (it's called Parental Alienation Syndrome or PAS). Some parents use their children as pawns in custody disputes, so now legitimate abuse is suspicious.
Family courts need a major overhaul. It's money making for states; present custody & support stink! We need more awareness of PAS. Fight for what's in the best interest of children, not manipulative parents.

What I object to is campaigns opposing "Domestic Violence against Women and Children" - as if men and fathers are somehow different, uncaring and always the monsters. I lost custody of my kid. My mental health was questioned in the process, and I was prescribed mental evaluation. I was also allowed supervised phone calls (no visitation was allowed). The Federal Government gives states grants and tax cuts for Child Support collected (Social Security Act Title IV-D), and sadly men still usually make more money than women. Whoever makes more money = pays more CS, has less time with child.

The reason being both men and women can be and are very capable of being verbally and physically abusive before during and after marriage. I urge you if there is a Commissioner, Attorney, or state rep that you find has biased opinions that are more dictated by hate or pandered ideals. I think you must write about them in all forms of media to get them fired and put the point across that it won't be tolerated.

I know what I'm about to say is gonna be unpopular, but...there are a substantial number of women who will make up stories to get custody of the children. Women who suffer the abuse throughout their marriage and then abruptly find the courage during their divorce to say what needs to be said are hard to distinguish from the women who make shit up to get custody. :(

This film was proven FALSE, and that fact was recognized by the PBS ombudsman.
The film was removed from PBS distribution lists.
In fact, the main protagonist was HERSELF convicted of child abuse in three separate court cases. Several of the children admit that Dad was NEVER abusive.
It's patently false to claim that abusive fathers are awarded custody in the majority of cases, when MOTHERS get custody in 90-97% of cases nationwide.
What we see here is Parental Alienation!

It just doesn't happen. An ACCUSATION of child abuse is not a CONVICTION. Research has shown that most such accusations are false. The ex-president of the MA bar assoc admitted that false accusations are often used as a tool to gain advantage in the custody proceedings. Studies have shown that MOTHERS abuse 62% more often than fathers. Most common abusers are mom's boyfriend or subsequent husband. Dad is the LEAST likely to abuse.

Why didnt the mother ask the daughter to call the police, right after the abuse, call 911 with the cell phone, so they could test her body? Thy is all very confusing. OK. They got it wrong at court, but mother has to figure a way to disclose the information. Buy your daughter a hidden camera, and give to her my the means of a third secret person. Come one! I have never been in this situation, but if I ever am, I think I will have to look for smart ways to reveal the abuse to the authorities.

Women also commit acts of abuse and domestic violence, and their actions and lies can lead to LETHAL results! We are now seeing a growing number of cases such as Susan Smith who appear fine... and are anything but! I grew up with a woman who was very much like a Susan Smith and it nearly cost me my life! I am growing up in this situation and 2 times divorced - domestic violence always plays a part starting with psychological and end up physical. I know that when we live in this situations we are not aware what happens because we are not knowing what is "normal" and we think we are the problem making one after another mistake or doing wrong - and thats the point. Abuse at anyone's hands -- mother or father -- is tragic. But now we see the consequences of children being manipulated by parents (it's called Parental Alienation Syndrome or PAS). Some parents use their children as pawns in custody disputes, so now legitimate abuse is suspicious.
Family courts need a major overhaul. It's money making for states; present custody & support stink! We need more awareness of PAS. Fight for what's in the best interest of children, not manipulative parents.

We need jury duty in every custody trial (remove monopoly power from Judges), Judiciary Accountability Department where litigants can file complain against corrupt Judges, corrupt Commissioners, and Corrupt Court Appointed Child Attorneys with their malpractice not following the laws and local rules and get rid of dysfuntional court mediator department.
If you are losing the custody of your children, it is time to speak up and exposed the corrupt system.

Senator Mark Leno passed two bills: AB 612 and AB 375 for State investigation in order to Audit corruption in Marin family court and Sacramento Family Court.
All over America, mothers are losing custody of their children when they file for divorce. These cases involve Domestic Violence, child sexual abused and child endangerment. CPS refused to protect children and failure to investigate. The protective parents lost the custody when they and children disclosed the abuse.

If you are saying "this story" as in Breaking the Silence, then you are mistaken. One mother in the "documentary" was actually found to be the abuser of her children. The "experts" used in it were found to be biased and use biased or false information as their "proof".

All you have to do is a 30 search and find court docs proving abuse at the hands of one mother and articles, at least one from the Corp for Public Broadcasting (they fund PBS), that speak of the bias in this film.

Please read Marin IJ on Feb 25, 2009, page A 13, Marin Family Court will be audit. It is time to clean up the corrupt family court. Corrupt Judges and commissioners run litigants financial down to the ground and put children in danger by covering up child abused. Court appointed child attorneys with their malpractice-failure to protect children and covering up for the abusive parents.

What I object to is campaigns opposing "Domestic Violence against Women and Children" - as if men and fathers are somehow different, uncaring and always the monsters. There is no denying that women are abused, but to couch it in a one sided way is detrimental to the welfare of children. There are many children who suffer horrendous abuse whilst in the custody of mothers. Some men too endure terrible suffering also. There should not be a gender division in opposing abuse against children.

I lost custody of my kid. My mental health was questioned in the process, and I was prescribed mental evaluation. I was also allowed supervised phone calls (no visitation was allowed). Then I realized I can't win it... Just for the record, I never as much as smoked in my lifetime (leave alone drugs or alcoholism)

Mothers and fathers are equally bad, immoral and guilty if they are using their children as the custody tools to battle one another. Children can experience "traumatic bonding" with a parent who abuses the child or their other parent, forming unusually strong but unhealthy ties to a batterer as a survival technique (often referred to as "Stockholm Syndrome").
Father Advocate should not attack all mothers. There will always be good and bad mothers and fathers.

I said, "It is a PROVEN FACT that mothers abuse their children more often - by far!" and that's an empirical fact, like it or not. I don't make the statistics. Sure there are some good mothers, and there are some bad fathers. However, that does not change facts! This fact has to be addressed and remedied! You are right, it is all about money, that is one of the reasons that mothers are still overwhelmingly awarded custody. The Federal Government gives states grants and tax cuts for Child Support collected (Social Security Act Title IV-D), and sadly men still usually make more money than women. Whoever makes more money = pays more CS, has less time with child.
What we need to remember: There are good parents on both sides who have unfairly had their children taken from them.

Uphold the laws when someone fabricates or presents false evidence. If a parent or CPS alleges child abuse allegation, hold a hearing with the right to discovery of all evidence made available to parents.
Mandate present fact and evidence not just hearsay at hearing.
The system cannot be trusted. It does not serve people. Children deserve better.

4. Mandate a search for family members to be given the opportunity to adopt their own relatives if children need to be removed permanently.
5. Mandate a jury trial where every piece of evidence is presented before permanently removing a child from his or her parents. Open family court, remove the secrecy.
Allow the press and family member access. Give parents the opportunity in court to speak and be a part of their children's future.

Yes this happens! I witness that this also happens to dads much more often due to anti-father hysteria in the media. This is despite the fact that studies and facts prove that abuse and mental illness correlate & women have both symptoms more often. Studies also show mothers abuse their children and husbands more than the other way around, yet courts favor mothers. A court that goes after, maligns and destroys one sex can then eat up the other too. Children always lose, courts always win.

In any case, my comment was not to proudguy when he asserted that "stop beating your wife" is all feminists can say. Yes it sure is your right to believe anything you want to, however, it's a dangerous road to assert that anyone against this film is a wife-beater. There are some legitimate arguments here, and while I ultimately come out on the pro-film side, that doesn't mean that we get to disregard the problems all together.

Well think about it, there are 2 million men in prison. 75% are in there on drug charges. The other for fighting, murder, robbery and other crimes. There are only 15,000 men convicted of rape each year, There isn't much room for men convicted of domestic abuse. Which is usually he said she said.
