Japan, Norway, Iceland, among others, have a whaling tradition that goes back a lot further than the Makah's. So what's the difference? I have a feeling most of those supporting the Makah on this issue would continue to support the international whaling ban. It's also worth mentioning that when the Makah renewed the debate, they put a huge dent in international efforts to save our dwindling whale populations for the same reason. My people have traditions too. For millennium we have explored and conquered new lands, been at the cutting edge of science, industry and medicine. The White Man has created prosperity and brought civilization where there were only ignorant superstitious savages barely more advanced than troglodytes.

whaling has been a part of our tradition before you people were even born. our treaty of 1855 states so. but if you whites want to hate, then hate but there is NOTHING you "whites" can do to stop our tradition!
I'm fundamentally opposed to whaling, but certainly the Japanese, Icelandic, and Norwegian people are are a far greater concern than are native peoples.
Oh! And how did you get the footage of the whale after the harpoon and shot? None of the TV stations released it to the public, and wouldn't release it to students. It was lame.
This is fantastic! I interviewed all of the same people, and fell in love with the society and the people. I love the way this is put together. Is it your work?
It really is horrid that the five whalers were treated like criminals. The native americans respect the earth and all beings on it that they would never do what the europeans did to this land (abuse and deplete natural resources). In Japan, in the old days, we used to be able to easily get whale meat from the fishermen. Thanks to the global restrictions, whale meat is now rare & expensive. We only took what we needed and never more. Those who abuse nature can't understand this concept I guess.
I have been teaching about the people of the PODS where the ancestry tribal people did travel cross the sea and brought back whales and traded with other tribe over seas as well.
The only thing that can stop us from hunting whales is us (native americas/1st nations). Looking forward to the next hunt ( i am predicting very, very soon).
a question to ask is... can we survive without killing whales? are we doing it for tradition, survival or what?? these are questions to ask ourselves.... tradition is not made of rock and can change if the tribe is agreeable to it.
i love the makah nation, their land and sea. they were here before us and they cherish traditions. i hate to see the whale killed, but, if you watched a cow being shot in the head - you'd feel the same way, and, you would eat the steak or cheeseburger. If you saw a chicken hanging upside down and put to sleep, you'd feel the same as you do when you see the whale. but you shop in grocery stores for your chicken breasts. do you give thanks? because they do. and, so do their children.
people without culture will never understand the link those of us with culture have, until they find their link to earth mother and sky father. great comment KisameRulz :)
the makah and their ancestors hunted whale for 4000 years and only when the european RAPED the ocean did they nearly become extinct. watch the video again and actually listen this time.
our modern society is full of rights, with no personal social responsibilities, just because you have a right does not mean it is right.... how are you responsible? many of our traditional foods were displaced by new species or hunted commercially to the brink of and over the edge of extinction... what are our responsibilities?
As far as genetic diversity--I've read studies that have found that it is higher than expected and there may now be more whales than the ocean can support for long.
This guys now "care about cultural and spiritual connection whith whaless" . Last speakers of their language are in the graves, their traditional religion also shurelly not exist, they not care about this tradions, but they care about " about cultural and spiritual value of whaling" on the rare whale
Whale hunting by Makah in 21 century is not same thing as whale hunting in first part of 19 century. Whales are now very endangered, recent genetic testing prove that their recovery is greatly overestimated in last decade. Every killed whale mean futher reducing their already low genetic diversity
If they hunted the whale traditionally with spears alone, whites would be mad. If they use modern weapons to end the hunt more quickly, whites are mad. Whites cannot make up their minds. The Makah use the meat. If the whites were given the choice to pay reparations to the tribe for all the treaty-breaking-- or honor the treaty-- they would go out and help hunt the whales!!
Modern Makah whaling is not cultural or traditional. Nowadays it consists of a bunch of young hooligans that want nothing more but to go big-game hunting. And to top it off, the head of their whaling team is a white guy with an elephant gun! It's a blood sport, not subsistence.
The Makah don't have to prove they "need the food" (i.e. subsistence); they're exercising rights guaranteed under international Treaty. It's only "bloodsport" through monocultural (white) spectacles.
