Japan, Norway, Iceland, among others, have a whaling tradition that goes back a lot further than the Makah's. So what's the difference? I have a feeling most of those supporting the Makah on this issue would continue to support the international whaling ban. It's also worth mentioning that when the Makah renewed the debate, they put a huge dent in international efforts to save our dwindling whale populations for the same reason. They're hardly stewards of the Earth.

It really is horrid that the five whalers were treated like criminals. The native americans respect the earth and all beings on it that they would never do what the europeans did to this land (abuse and deplete natural resources). In Japan, in the old days, we used to be able to easily get whale meat from the fishermen. Thanks to the global restrictions, whale meat is now rare & expensive. We only took what we needed and never more. Those who abuse nature can't understand this concept I guess.

i love the makah nation, their land and sea. they were here before us and they cherish traditions. i hate to see the whale killed, but, if you watched a cow being shot in the head - you'd feel the same way, and, you would eat the steak or cheeseburger. If you saw a chicken hanging upside down and put to sleep, you'd feel the same as you do when you see the whale. but you shop in grocery stores for your chicken breasts. do you give thanks? because they do. and, so do their children.
