We had a 78 Accord long ago, had a points distributor, seemed like it made every noise, smoked all the colors of the rainbow but it never completely *died*, even going up into the mtns, we'd stop, let it *rest* a few mins, then start up & keep going! my 91 civic was down for over a year then we found out it was the main relay. sad it was down for sooo long and it was just a relay. sadder is my uncle was a mechanic and he couldn't figure it out til he talked to a honda mechanic who told him that was what it was. I love my civics. I've had 3 civics and a del sol. my last civic lasted me 8 years and only put about 1000 into it in repairs and would have been much less had a check it over once in a while and caught the probs befor ethey got bad

people should NOT do ANYTHING on their Honda's because it will be considered RICE. No GPS, no new Stereo, new tires. Only use the original tires. ANYTHING done to a Honda is "Rice".
hey my man im 90% sure that your problem is the fuel pump...cus the starter sounds like is rotating but the fuel is not getting in the injectors to ignite the car....

The main relay is common problem on the 88-91 Honda Civic/CRX/Wagovan. The soldering they used was cheap, and they develop dry joints, and in hot weather when the solder points expand, the circuit is open and your fuel pump will not turn on. You can tell if it's the main relay by listening closely after turning the key to the on position: if you hear a click followed by a hymning sound then your main relay is fine, if not, then your main relay needs to be replaced or rebuilt.
What about if it just happened sometimes. I have the same problem sometimes. It starts good but if it shut down then it will take about 5 mins to start. Any ideas?

Start from easy on down.... make sure you have spark. On the D-15-A1 block you have it should have throttle body fuel injection so you should see if the injectors are squirting fuel into the manifold. Just from hearing it i would say its not the engine. Causes could be ignition coil, broken wires to the coil, fuel pump, or cam or crank sensor. Hope that helped.
lol that's the same thing that happened to my 84 honda accord, I didn't have time to fix it so I sold it and after 2 weeks the people who bought came to my door and said it had a cracked engine block.
lol okay check your ignition .. distributor !! it intends to burn out on that year do to lack of tune up... wires plugs and caop and rotor and of course a new distributor ! coil is burnt out ..

@joker16w your fuses is one of the first things to look at when your car doesn't start seeing as if you remove one of the fuses from your engine bay, depending which one, it usually will prevent your car from running

it sounds like my Honda Civic 92 Dx......it won't start on the HOT DAY.....try to replace the MAIN RELAY...it located under steering wheel...above the switch that release the hood. it has one flat screw...Main Relay cost about $ 70 at the dealer....

Its the fuel pump. Try putting the key to "ON" wait 20 seconds. Then Crank it over, if nothing happens try pulling a spark plug out and plugging it but on and place it on something metal and get someone to turn the key to on. If there it no start then your narrowing it down to the distributor.

hey look up dieseling. i think when ur car keeps running without the key being in, its dieseling. its rear but some civics do this. google it u just might be able to fix the problem or buy a HAYNES mechanic book. its tells u how to fix that problem also. i read up on it on that book. but i dnt have it anymore
First off i would rebuild the transmission, then if thats not it try repacking the muffler bearings with grease. I am sure your blinker fluid is topped off, if not then top it off with some grape kool aid with at least 2 sups of sugar. Might be a good idea to also rotate your spark plugs and put in a new spare tire filter. Check your coil packs by sticking your tounge on the wire while you have a friend turn over the engine.
The main relay (?) hmm. you need 3 things to make a car run... Spark, Fuel, and Air. Main relay = spark... any of these 3 things are missing and it will not run. My first guess was "no spark". oh well. glad your car is running.
You need to find out if it has lost spark or fuel. The easiest way I know to do this is to loosen the nut at the top of the fuel filter, turn the key on but don't crank it. If fuel comes out than it is probably an ignition problem, if it doesn't, than it is a fuel problem. Visit my channel if you still have the issue.

try buying a intake cleaner bottle and spray it straight into the the throttle body(it the part where the black air tube is connected to)remove the tube from the throttle body and spray some intake cleaner into there and crank it if it starts and dies then it could be your fuel pump or fuel relay(main relay) or could be something eles..but it sound like a bad fuel pump

Had the same problem with my integra but if i left the key in the forward position for 10 minutes it would start like nothing. Turned out to be the main relay. It's under the steering column area. the Main relay controls the fuel pump and the signal to the computer so if that fails the car will not turn on no matter what you do to it.. Save yourself the money and get the part threw ebay, it's alot cheaper..

My 93 civic have 322000km. I change the engine for one reason because my old engine had a blown head gasket for too long but i still been able to drive now it as a broken axle and ball joint because I have been given too much abuse of the car at the track but still good for an other 100 000km.
if you guys see his cel light is on.. no honda will start if the cel light stays on like this, heres my sugestion turn the key on and wait for like 5 minutes when the cel light turns off it will fire right up until then it is useless this is from your map sensor going bad mine is too and every once in a while it will do this if you still have no luck disconect your battery, all these damn kids think its spark... lol ;)

easiest way to see if its got spark, take out one of the spark plugs and then plug it into the distributor. have someone crank the engine and see if there is a spark.

*put ur gear on neutral then ask a number of friends to push as fast as they can while u are turning the ignition "ON"..that is how i jump start my ae92 corolla...
I have the same car. This model has a factory defect in the Coil. It gets damaged because of the motor´s heat. It had to replace it twice. You can also replace it for an external coil to last more time.

i can pull the key out when its parked but when i drive with no key it dies could i be the ignition cylinder or switch?
or possibly the main relay
your help would be greatly appreciated

First off i would rebuild the transmission, then if thats not it try repacking the muffler bearings with grease. I am sure your blinker fluid is topped off, if not then top it off with some grape kool aid with at least 2 sups of sugar. Might be a good idea to also rotate your spark plugs and put in a new spare tire filter. Check your coil packs by sticking your tounge on the wire while you have a friend turn over the engine.

The main relay (?) hmm. you need 3 things to make a car run... Spark, Fuel, and Air. Main relay = spark... any of these 3 things are missing and it will not run. My first guess was "no spark". oh well. glad your car is running.

You need to find out if it has lost spark or fuel. The easiest way I know to do this is to loosen the nut at the top of the fuel filter, turn the key on but don't crank it. If fuel comes out than it is probably an ignition problem, if it doesn't, than it is a fuel problem. Visit my channel if you still have the issue.

I got a 93 civic coupe that wont start i changed the starter...Im getting spark but like u said when i loosen the bolt at the top of the fuel filter and turned the key on no fuel came out at all....does that mean its my fuel pump??

check if the plugs are properly gaped.. if thats not the issue then try the distubuter... if not change out the harness

try buying a intake cleaner bottle and spray it straight into the the throttle body(it the part where the black air tube is connected to)remove the tube from the throttle body and spray some intake cleaner into there and crank it if it starts and dies then it could be your fuel pump or fuel relay(main relay) or could be something eles..but it sound like a bad fuel pump

Had the same problem with my integra but if i left the key in the forward position for 10 minutes it would start like nothing. Turned out to be the main relay. It's under the steering column area. the Main relay controls the fuel pump and the signal to the computer so if that fails the car will not turn on no matter what you do to it.. Save yourself the money and get the part threw ebay, it's alot cheaper..

My 93 civic have 322000km. I change the engine for one reason because my old engine had a blown head gasket for too long but i still been able to drive now it as a broken axle and ball joint because I have been given too much abuse of the car at the track but still good for an other 100 000km.

if you guys see his cel light is on.. no honda will start if the cel light stays on like this, heres my sugestion turn the key on and wait for like 5 minutes when the cel light turns off it will fire right up until then it is useless this is from your map sensor going bad mine is too and every once in a while it will do this if you still have no luck disconect your battery, all these damn kids think its spark... lol ;)

either no spark, or no fuel.
easiest way to see if its got spark, take out one of the spark plugs and then plug it into the distributor. have someone crank the engine and see if there is a spark.

*put ur gear on neutral then ask a number of friends to push as fast as they can while u are turning the ignition "ON"..that is how i jump start my ae92 corolla...

I have the same car. This model has a factory defect in the Coil. It gets damaged because of the motor´s heat. It had to replace it twice. You can also replace it for an external coil to last more time.
