It's funny how Arsenio called them the hippies of hip hop. They hated being labelled as hippies, and even had a b-side track called "Ain't Hip to be Labeled a Hippie" and their second album was all about distancing themselves from that style and the whole D.A.I.S.Y. Age thing.

@AnimatedSwagStewie Don't talk down to me man , surely your ego isnt that big that you need to be the professor on youtube , I already all of that anyway you ass
@AnimatedSwagStewie That was a misinterpretation, which has been cleared a long time ago, and they got dead tired of. They just used the daisy concept for fun, they didn't stand for everything the hippie movement did. Sure, they stood for peace, but that's about it. When they talked about daisies in the songs, they talked about the music coming from their souls. They cleared all confusion with De La Soul is Dead.
And just for the record, there's more than rap to this.
follow me, am so special: at 7 (pm, am?!?) went to bathroom, 7.15 already was drinking coffee- did it till it was 3 (pm,am?!?), at 3.22 my thought was: what beaver is doing now? (not bored at all), more on: follow me
@DarrickDeBonair Thank God he did, De La just kept getting better until 1996, after that they have been another standard and great hip-hop act, but their first four are all classics.
Hippie isn't something to be ashamed of... Hippie is no insult--only when used by neo-conservative fucks who equate being against war and advocating for peace with violating good ol' traditional values. Maybe they aren't hippies, but I don't think they should have taken it as a diss.
At the time, I was offended for De La, looking at it now, I don't think Arsenio meant any harm... I just think it was a poor choice of words and a culture he didn't fully understand.
@PigChampi0n Exactly. Before hip-hop was solely about Gucci and Prada, with scantily clad women in EVERY single video. It's so monotonous and boring now. De La Soul rule!
Members of De La Soul didnt like being called hippies for what they were trying to spread through their music. What were they trying to spread? Love, Harmony, being a good person... why do these idea have to be only associated with being a "hippy"?
Shouldn't we all try to spread these things as humans? What else are you gonna do? Hate? ....
De la soul are the guys with a proper style of dress in the manner enjoyed in 1989 were for not wearing bling bling and etc. Me myself and i is the fun of these people who get in the groove and rap in this fashionable way of dressing but in menssagem that transmit the sound has no lyrical content, so we'll stop to enjoy with it because they bring something new to the music even with different way of dressing the stars of rap internationally, are real in the music.
@TheGypsyMagic i know where's all the materialistic rhymes about their rented record company mansions and cars? or better yet why didnt they have a special dance the song is named after in which they repeat over and over again? they certainly aren't sending a negative message telling people to sell drugs and kill people even when they never did it.. yeah you're right dude they a bunch of clowns
Damn what is that awesome loop that comes in at 2:39? I know the bass line is GQ - Disco Nights, but does anyone know what the guitar laid over it is from? It's hard to hear but it's there.
Being called or referred to a Hippy is an insult IMO. It's a very limited in scope reference to a demographic that was spawned out of the counterculture of the mid 60's. You can only refer to a Baby Boomer as a Hippie, to give them what they deserve. I have been called a hippy due to my ecological stance and positive vibes, especially when I happen to grow my hair long. I resent the term hippy also if directed at me myself and I as it dilutes your own direction to a box. Peace, de la were great
Hall introduced De La Soul as "the hippies of hip-hop," who then performed their hit single "Me, Myself, and I," which explicitly states that they are not, in fact, hippies. The credits for the show also began to run over their performance before they were finished, further contributing to the perceived "diss." Soon after, De La Soul recorded the song "Pass the Plugs," in which they responded to the incident with the lyrics, "Arsenio dissed us but the crowd kept clapping
Actually De La called themselves Hippies back then. That was their gimmick in 89. They called it The Daisy Age! Thats why they dressed like that. So Arsenio wasnt dissing them.

@MikieP4121 he referred to them as hippies, cos their album 3 Feet High And Rising was covered in flowers and they claim their music was for the D.A.I.S.Y. Age making them sound like hippies, but what most people didn't know was D.A.I.S.Y. actually stood for DA Inner Sound Y'all, so that's why most people thought they were hippies.
