  • You cant learn how to rap from a book yo, Just listen to the music!

  • wtf is Dave wearing lol!!??? de la soul for pres!!!

  • What beat is this from? 2:00 - 2:06

  • @al158411 Ain't hip to be labeled a hippie

  • @wahoofan88 Thanks man!

  • Im gonna be seeing these guys live tommorow, 22 years on and the de la love is still strong!

  • Cough cough *Not hippies*

  • "Arsenio dissed us but the crowd kept clapping"

  • It's funny how Arsenio called them the hippies of hip hop. They hated being labelled as hippies, and even had a b-side track called "Ain't Hip to be Labeled a Hippie" and there second album was all about distancing themselves from that style and the whole D.A.I.S.Y. Age thing.

  • Love the original tune by Funkadelic but love de la soul's own hip style too...thanx for upload.

  • wow the old school dances were classic

  • Wow miss this show

  • old school dancing!! lol

  • This has been rated 101% authentic hip-hop. There is no pretension, posturing or menacing body language. "Just bring ya beats and ya rhymes!"

  • had a horrible day at work. couldn't sleep. then i watched this and now i feel like a million fuckin bucks. thanks de la!

  • @Riles311 yeah...it's sad how the "industry" doesn't promote this upbeat-feel-good music anymores.

  • Maseo like a mother fucker!

  • "Arsenio dissed us, but the crowd kept clappin"

  • ayyyyyyyyyyye f***n wit it!!!!!

  • Wow, as I shake my got damn Intellect! What the Fuck Happen to Hip-Hop/Rap God, old Field Niggaz be on that bullshit straight Up! God Bless De La Soul!

  • I wanted to be a celebrity and get on that show so bad. I remember watching this the first time sigh...those were the days.

  • Im an artist tryna get my sound heard, id appreciate if u stopped on my channel, my music's gettin a name 4 itself n will not dissapoint . Hope u enjoy "its the kingpin"

  • Those 3 dudes sittin together in the audience are the only ones getting into it

  • im just wondering are they gay ???

  • @whosajigaya no . there the hippy's of hip hop. one of the greatest rap groups ever. do your research kid. they opened gates for lots a rappers .

  • @AnimatedSwagStewie Don't talk down to me man , surely your ego isnt that big that you need to be the professor on youtube , I already all of that anyway you ass

  • @AnimatedSwagStewie That was a misinterpretation, which has been cleared a long time ago, and they got dead tired of. They just used the daisy concept for fun, they didn't stand for everything the hippie movement did. Sure, they stood for peace, but that's about it. When they talked about daisies in the songs, they talked about the music coming from their souls. They cleared all confusion with De La Soul is Dead.

And just for the record, there's more than rap to this.

  • why don't people dress like this anymore? shit was fly!

  • @Paintavulgarpolaroid always wondered about that, was it cuz he called de la "hippies"?

  • I find it funny how they start to sing Gary Shider's vocal sample but they just can't reach Gary's high note. Forever Funkadelic baby!

  • follow me, am so special: at 7 (pm, am?!?) went to bathroom, 7.15 already was drinking coffee- did it till it was 3 (pm,am?!?), at 3.22 my thought was: what beaver is doing now? (not bored at all), more on: follow me

  • This shit is fucking banging.

  • epic

  • the beat is very similar to dj quiks - quik Is the name

  • Its crazy to think that if arsenio didnt say that their whole 2nd album and probably music direction would have been different from it is now

  • @DarrickDeBonair Thank God he did, De La just kept getting better until 1996, after that they have been another standard and great hip-hop act, but their first four are all classics.

  • "arsenio dissed us but the crowd kept clappin"-delasoul

  • @1lifestyle Word. Cause he called them hippies. Everyone misinterpreted the entire message and image of De La, including the D.A.I.S.Y. Age.

  • Does anyone else think the one with the glasses is cute?

  • HAPPY DAYS! AND no need to sing about shooting people, sex and drugs..and bitches and whores (yawn) get over yourself....

  • word!!!!!!!

  • "arsenio dissed us but the crowd kept clappin"

  • @xpoondiggy iam ibe..u are a fool...thats exactly what he was talkin bout!!

  • Man rap was good back then! And look at the woman in the back ground... They can dance, and they're bodies are not exposed! RIP to real talent.

  • du bon son!! pas comme la merde de maintenant...

  • One of the best sons of hip hop and a classic of the 90's dance music!!!!!

  • we need more hippie hip hop

  • wot happened to de la soul and arsenio hall ?>?

    write back

  • Back in the day niggad

  • lol them three white dudes in the audience were live

  • i wish i was there, only born on this day

  • @cactus337 oh...well he's cute...from the pic on the album. Lol.

  • Where's the third guy?

  • @Stmpnqueen he's the dj.

  • Hippie isn't something to be ashamed of... Hippie is no insult--only when used by neo-conservative fucks who equate being against war and advocating for peace with violating good ol' traditional values. Maybe they aren't hippies, but I don't think they should have taken it as a diss.

  • At the time, I was offended for De La, looking at it now, I don't think Arsenio meant any harm... I just think it was a poor choice of words and a culture he didn't fully understand.

  • well they say the're not hippies in the song so that's kind of disrespectful

  • OOOOOOOH, you let 'em call you Arsenio!

  • F****!!! THIS is entertainment. De La, F.T.W.!

  • Look here, you Arsenio gum-having punk!

-Ooooh..You let him call you Arsenio..

  • Wow nice to see the ladies who are the backup dancers don't feel the need to dress like whores. Damn this was a different time...

  • @PigChampi0n

    word

  • @PigChampi0n proper dancing init!

  • @PigChampi0n I could not had say it better

  • @PigChampi0n yes respect bro! more civilised times-!!

  • @PigChampi0n It'd be really nice to someday not hear "whore" when referring to women. Fuck you, sincerely.

  • @PigChampi0n Exactly. Before hip-hop was solely about Gucci and Prada, with scantily clad women in EVERY single video. It's so monotonous and boring now. De La Soul rule!

  • @PigChampi0n That was the equivalent of dressing like a whore back then : P

  • Hip Hop used to be so innocent...I actually do miss this...De La Soul means from the soul

  • @kellymoosecock so ture

  • you say plug 1 and 2 are hippies? no we're not, that's pure plug bull

  • Ain't Hip To Be Labeled A Hippie

  • Ain't Hip To Be Labeled A Hippie

  • Members of De La Soul didnt like being called hippies for what they were trying to spread through their music. What were they trying to spread? Love, Harmony, being a good person... why do these idea have to be only associated with being a "hippy"?

Shouldn't we all try to spread these things as humans? What else are you gonna do? Hate? ....

  • de la is legendary. they even hate being called hippies, but I think it is the reality of what they were putting out at the time.

  • De la soul are the guys with a proper style of dress in the manner enjoyed in 1989 were for not wearing bling bling and etc. Me myself and i is the fun of these people who get in the groove and rap in this fashionable way of dressing but in menssagem that transmit the sound has no lyrical content, so we'll stop to enjoy with it because they bring something new to the music even with different way of dressing the stars of rap internationally, are real in the music.

  • Awesome performance and song.

  • Does anyone know geroge Clinton's version of this same beat?? All I know it's the original version

  • @vegasboy69 wouldn't know it without the help of good burger! lol

  • @vegasboy69 Not Just Knee Deep

  • Killed it.

  • Gotta LOVE the background dancers!!!

  • Lol these guys are a bunch of clowns

  • @TheGypsyMagic

what y'on about, De La Soul are dope

  • @TheGypsyMagic i know where's all the materialistic rhymes about their rented record company mansions and cars? or better yet why didnt they have a special dance the song is named after in which they repeat over and over again? they certainly aren't sending a negative message telling people to sell drugs and kill people even when they never did it.. yeah you're right dude they a bunch of clowns

  • i'm a french guy and i say respect the 90's

  • @grihalt

    congratulations?

  • good shit!nice song!

  • at 3 minutes this sh*t goes insane!

  • are these the dudes from gorillaz??

  • @211PLOP112 yes... they have participated on the gorillaz song "Fell Good Inc."

  • they are featured on feel good inc.

  • NO but they were featured in two of their tracks, Feel Good Inc. and Superfast Jellyfish

  • i miss the arsenio hall shoiw, that was the shit

  • @pureevil77

    yeah it was

  • "Arsenio dissed us but the crowd kept clappin'."

  • When did the dis happin'?

  • YO!!!

    You Are Hip-Hop.

Just wanted you to know that...If you know that quote...You are Hip Hip...Much props.

  • Damn what is that awesome loop that comes in at 2:39? I know the bass line is GQ - Disco Nights, but does anyone know what the guitar laid over it is from? It's hard to hear but it's there.

  • lol hell yeah that bass line was dope as shit!!

  • Being called or referred to a Hippy is an insult IMO. It's a very limited in scope reference to a demographic that was spawned out of the counterculture of the mid 60's. You can only refer to a Baby Boomer as a Hippie, to give them what they deserve. I have been called a hippy due to my ecological stance and positive vibes, especially when I happen to grow my hair long. I resent the term hippy also if directed at me myself and I as it dilutes your own direction to a box. Peace, de la were great

  • haha! what a old vid from de la soul!xD

  • I was 20 years old really time truly flies

  • Yea in another song De La said Arsenio dissed them, but if this is wjat they're referring to they're being way too sensitive.

  • yea they were being sensitive...they act like he did that on purpose

  • This is very coool !!!

De la Soul in Brussel !

  • De La Soul's music was timeless. An amazing pool of talent. Oh ya - BTW they were kid cudi's pure influence.

  • kid cudi is shit

  • I wasn't even born when this song came out. It's still hot.

  • damn i was just 6

  • Unbelievable how time flies! Wow I was 15 back then!

  • OMG! 21 years ago! GASP! BUT THEY'RE STILL THE JAM SONGS (that's always sample but never good as the original!)

  • I come for the wuggas, but stay for the jiggy juggas.

  • can it be my de la clothes or is it just my de la song?

  • wtf hippies of hiphop. fool :P

  • Actually De La called themselves Hippies back then. That was their gimmick in 89. They called it The Daisy Age! Thats why they dressed like that. So Arsenio wasnt dissing them.

  • @TheSonsOfLight in the song "pass the plugs" they say

"arsenio dissed us but the crowd kept clapping" i think hes referring to this

  • @ittf: Okay..My bad..

  • @TheSonsOfLight

Even though though they did do the whole Daisy Age thing, they didn't like being called hippies. They even mentioned it in later albums. iTTFNcrew actually had it right about the Arsenio reference.

  • No Doubt. i wonder Why I got a thumbs down for admitting I was wrong. Hmmm. The intelligence of cats these days.

  • Arsenio dissed De La Soul? What? Why. This was hot! And still is!

  • he didn't diss them at all. it was 1991 it was all NWA pushing gangsta rap and Too Live with their sort of misogystic message. I think he just meant that they had more of an idealistic (hippy) message is all

  • Actually it was 1989.

  • this isnt 91 buddy, but i dont think he intentionally meant to diss them

  • i know 89! i was basing how old i though i was. I thought was 12 but it was 1989 is apparently i was only 10 years old. wow i was listening to some good musich at such a young age. better than most of the stuff now-a-days

  • @MikieP4121 he referred to them as hippies, cos their album 3 Feet High And Rising was covered in flowers and they claim their music was for the D.A.I.S.Y. Age making them sound like hippies, but what most people didn't know was D.A.I.S.Y. actually stood for DA Inner Sound Y'all, so that's why most people thought they were hippies.

  • @SupaSugaFree no to mention they are sampling Funkadelic

  • @MUN7001 yeah I know is it the song KNEE DEEP?

  • @SupaSugaFree yeah

  • @MikieP4121 Announcing them as hippies in a song where they explicitly states that they are not hippies cannot make them feel good about their art form.

  • @MikieP4121 this was 89 not 91 and i dont even think nwa was ttogether in 91

  • @1lifestyle nwa was just disbanding in 91.

  • @1lifestyle NWA was together in 1986..

  • @MikieP4121

not "ALL" was NWA gangster rap.

  • @MikieP4121 in the song they mention they dont want to be called hippies.

  • @MikieP4121 Exactly.

  • @MikieP4121

    nah..

Arsenio, and audiences wanted great live performances...

that's one of de la's weaknesses...and their clip on arsenio was trash...

which is why you didn't get any direct audience shots....

hammer blew up in that era because he put on a visually great performance that mainstream audience wanted to see

  • @MikieP4121

it's a line from "Pass The Plugs" man

  • @MikieP4121 its also kind of a dis when the credits are rolling before the guys are even done performing

  • @MikieP4121 Positive rap, rather than the rap about how they gunna beat someone up for crack or how they fail at life. Oldskool is best.

  • Thank you for posting this. I haven't seen this video in 20 years. :)

  • Love the background dancers.

  • mi mizelv ant ei ...bumbum

    deladeladeal! :XD

  • one great song...luv it...makes me almost forget about the other shit that nowadays rulz the hip-hop-charts...

even though i´m more of the rock-listener, i´d still put this song onto my top 15-list...

  • wow! the second record what maseo's playing,

    remix or what?

  • he calls them hippies of rap but just coz they dont talk about popin a cap in some ones ass doesnt mean there hippies.

  • Comment removed

  • de la soul,de la hight,de la real hip hop.

    respect!!!

  • Arsenio dissed us but the crowd kept clappin...

  • pass the peas like they used to say!

  • @erickliddell how did he diss you?

  • De La have stated many times that they are 1) Not hippies and 2) Don't make psychedelic music. They just have jazz backgrounds and like peace/positivity. That toolbag Arsenio drew the line while also publicly proclaiming his ignorance.

  • THIS. WAS. 20. YEARS. AGO.

  • I ove this music i listen to this when i was like 15 years old now iam 21

  • wow ..6 WHOLE YEARS Later!

    amazing!

  • Yes.i cant believe it has been 6 years.(:

  • nice

  • I love de la soul and love old school hip hop

  • Arsenio's corny anyways that was back when he was riding Eddie Murphys dick for every inch he could get he fell off HARD

    De La still ROCKS

  • how are they hippies?

  • "Arsenio dissed us, but the crowd kept clappin..."...ok, now i get it!~

  • lol the crowd, only 3 people. o.O

  • NCAA FOOTBALL 06

  • am i the only person that this reminds me of NBA Street V3?

  • ah man i loved that game

  • Fuck sakes, should of listened to the song, arsenio.

You say plug one and two are hippies

no were not, that's pure plug bull.

They changed the beat to; aint hip to be labeled a hippie at 2:00. Noice.
