I have been a practitioner of Japanese Swordsmanship for almost a decade and i can happily say that The European Longswords cut just as well as a Japanese sword when used properly. Both swords were made to cut, if the longsword was bad then it would not have been used for so long. I still prefer the Katana as my preferred sword but the European straight swords are great weapons.
well the debate over which type of sword is better could go on for years, if you've never used both types of swords.
I have personally used Super high quality english swords and I own a Hanwei bushido katana ($1300sword) and I can tell you its all in the quality of that particular sword.
I've used both types among others and they all have the same cutting abilities,i'm not arguing or dissing the katana or saying that the english "straight" sword is better or worse. It just gets under my skin that the katana is over glorified because of the forging process, which btw was done by saxons 600 hundred years prior to the japanese.well i've finished sorry to rant on your video.
Great to hear your impressions on the longsword. I was surprised the first time I cut with it. I thought the flexible blade might make it a poor or at least difficult and tricky to use cutter, but nothing could be further from the truth. I can only imagine how good a non-budget (Atrim, Albion, etc.) longsword would cut.
the Atrim 1429 (single handed sword) is, I think, my best cutter of all my swords. it's a very high quality blade.

@coralreefdotch It's not a skirt, it's a pair of hakama. Wide legged pleated pants.

I love that bit about "probably never buying an English sword" and you're now selling Atrims, Hiroshi.

well the particular style sword I used was only in style for a couple hundred years, but if your speaking of swords in general, I completely agree.

I meant straight edged swords opposed to katana swords.

by forging process are you talking about forge welding making "Damascus steel" or differential hardening the blade?
