I'm sorry but @hankschannel you should watch this again and remind yourself of it. I feel that you have lost your personal touch because you're not doing this channel anymore or maybe because the vlogbrothers have gotten so mainstream, but I really like listening to you and your opinions. I'd really like that to continue, too. Vlogbrothers are losing some of their touch. Other than, of course, the wonderful things you do like the recent project for awesome! Which was awesome.
@emoluvistrueluv@hankschannel I just feel, it felt more like a community of awesome people then, where as now... it's two brothers overwhelmed and spewing things out because they have to...
i noticed there are no thumbs dow. that means im with alot of true nerdfighters that are accepting people. i for one agree with you're reasons and think they're amazing ones.
"the cream of nerdfighteria" lol. i loved that. i for one am newer to nerdfighteria but hope to be in the cream of it one day
I for one am delighted to have stumbled upon your channel Hank. You ARE a very interesting person & thanks in large part to the wonder that is The VlogBrothers & projects like the epically amazing Project 4 Awesome I've come to deeply enjoy & appreciate vlogging. Youtube in particular & just video blogging in general is a uniquely immersive & interactive means of communicating & sharing with humanity. Thank you for making me think & sharing not just the thoughts in your head but yourself. :D
I have replayed 3:21 - 3:25 so many times :) And I agree, I think the only people that regularly watch these are nerdfighters, rather than just casual youtubers who stumble across a video and write stupid insults or spam.
Aw, Hank, it's awesome that you want to have a conversation with us and actually want to feel like you're part of the Nerdfighters community! There are too many people out there that only make videos to get a large number in the "views" box, and that's all they care about instead of caring about the people themselves. You actually do care about us. Thanks, Hank. And thanks for being you. :D
I really like that these videos are more low-key, and you being 'real' about stuff. I enjoy them for their equality like you say, in a different way to how I enjoy the vlogbrothers videos as entertainment.
I get what you are saying. I am guilty of being a "four word commenter" myself because I comment on an iPod touch, yadda yadda yadda. It makes me smile when people put more than "lol" or "lmao." This is a big difference from, say, a Shane Dawson video. Is it because Nerdfighters are smarter than Shane Dawson fans? I don't think that is the main reason. I think we actually believe that you will read our comment.
as someone who enjoys reading the comments, this is why i enjoy this being a small thing. it's just the right amount of people. hence why i only even talk about it with a few of my NF friends who already know about it.
I understand what you're saying and I like both channels. W/ this channel having a smaller amount of people you're able to express yourself in a different way than on the other channel. W/ VB channel you have a younger audiences and you and John take care to do things that are not just "age appropriate" but also things that work better with the masses of Nerdfighters. Either way, both channels are great and I'm gonna be sad when April is over and you stop doing your vlogs everyday.
Ahhh Hank Green Im so happy you got your own channel, you know what you and John Green inspired me to do videos on my own channel :) Thankyou you guys. You both rock and so do your nerdfighteria in your pants rofl. huugs.
Well, Hank, I think you're unattainably beautiful. :)
Anyway, usually all of the comments on vlogbrothers are thoughtful and interesting, but every once in a while I come across people who are just trolls that insult us.
BeatThePiper is right. As much as i love the vlogbrothers videos the comments have been becoming more and more "i can haz cheezbuurger"-ish. I understand a majority of that audience is teenaged girl and you kind of have to cater to that demographic sometimes-So I get why you would want another channel where you can be you and not be the hank that people expect to see in a Vlogbrothers video. You don't have to always be "on."
@tasteslikepaintnwood That makes sense. Maybe vlobrothers should just do what they like and if someone doesn't like it, they can just unsubscribe. I'm a teenaged girl and I love both of these channels, but some people wouldn't want that type of...normality? Anyway, I'm all for vlogbrothers going back to just regular style video if they want to. :)
Isn't that really the goal when making YouTube videos, to meet like minded people? I'm sure there are people that just do it for fame, to get parnered or whatever but I really like it when a person can just make videos and meet people that share their opinions or don't share their opinions for that matter but do it in a respectful manner.
Having a small following definitely allows you to feel more like you are part of a conversation and less like a performing act.
XD Probably the most dirty joke to ever come out of Hank's mouth on camera. I love it.
I agree, it's hard to actually feel like you can have discussions on videos where there are hundreds of thousands of people commenting. I'm a fairly avid comment reader and on videos that have interesting topics I like to try and read the comments. I usually don't do this on videos with lots of views because there are just far too many comments that are just trash/spam/not revelant.
So true. I almost hate commenting on popular videos because in the last few months *every time* I comment, no matter what I say, you get at least one person popping up who has to be a jerk. These experiences definitely give me pause before I comment ("Do I REALLY wanna deal with them today?") and ESPECIALLY whenever I ponder making videos of my own ("Can I really take it when the trolls show up and comment on *Insert Something About Me Here*?")
Your other point is that youre not unobtainably anything. Well you are. I live in Ohio you live in Montana there is physical distance. I do not have the luxury of calling you and talking to you. So in a lot of ways you are unobtainable. A person can be unobtainably interesting, smart or attractive and you can just pass them on the street. If people were unobtainable Shakespeares sonnets would be rather dull
@lysmeanslily One could say that Charlie is a celebrity in the sense that he has a strong fanbase, many viewers and perks that we regular users do not have. I wish I could have seen Toy Story 3 before everyone else, but I havent. Your point is that everyone on Youtube is normal, well so were some of the people in Hollywood. Sam Worthington (Jake Sully Avatar) lived in his car three years ago. Now hes been in 3 blockbusters.
@lysmeanslily Wow I suddenly feel the pressure to be thoughtful and interesting. I think that it's "interesting" that you don't buy into celebrity when it comes to YouTube. I think most of the time it's the viewers that build up the atmosphere. If you go to Charlieissocoollike's channel many girls could argue that he is a celebrity. Similarly in life viewers decide, through media measuring the generated interest of the public.
So I'm one of the newest subscribers and I have to say that I'm really interested in this channel and love the videos you have. I'm glad you haven't announced it on vlogbrothers. I agree that it's nice that this channel is small. Thanks for having a "discussive" community. You're awesome.
I like that you are doing this project because it feels more like the early early Vlogbrothers videos, not in the quality, but in the fact that it's more real somehow, and it's not being made just in the pure interest of entertaining a group of people. I still like the Vlogbrothers videos, and I will still give my thumbs up to them, because they are made of awesome, but still, this is nice...
I like reading the comments on your videos, when people comment on vlogbrothers it usually has grammar issues and homphobic comments. But I still love vlogbrothers, this is just different
I do like the vlogbrothers channel but I do like being part of a smaller community like you said. I feel more... special.. I guess. I don't know but I'm excited to watch more of your videos.
I wish I had friends like you and John. I think life would be less boring and I wouldn't mind spending lots of time with them. Thank goodness for both this channel and your vlogbrothers because it's like I spend time with friends like you!
... ^ I sound like a loner there. Just to clarify... I do have friends. And I get tanned because I go outside.
Not saying loner's don't, and not that there's anything wrong with loners.
*leaves four word comment* .. Not really :) Hey Hank hey hey hey Hank ... I enjoy these videos alot, I won't say more than vlogbrothers because it's entirely different, but I like feeling at the heart of Nerdfighteria and these are more .. like that ... yeah ... that is all
Hank, I really understand what you're trying to say with Vlogbrothers becoming less of a tight-knit community and more of a massive following, but don't be so pressured by that following to not feel comfortable making a video where you just talk. Though I love the newer videos, (they're flashy, entertaining, and jam-packed with nerd goodness) my favorite videos will always be the older videos of essentially, you and John just talking to each other. I'm sure other Nerdfighters feel the same.
We leave whole paragraphs...and often I reach my character limit. I quite like this channel. It reminds me of the old B20 videos, except you're more experienced with the whole thing. Clearly you ARE attainably interesting: you have achieved this level of interestingness.
My dad told me this earlier today: "If you can't become a master of the English language...I advise you to grow your own. It worked for me." Oh, nerdy compliments. How I love thee.
i really agree with all of your reasons for wanting this channel. i feel that this channel is more personal. you can feel free to talk about whatever you want to talk about, without having to worry about the time limit and having to keep people on the edge of their seats at all times. also, there are few haters on these grounds. thats why i LOVE this channel. your the best hank
I've always wondered why you've never mentioned this channel on VB before but I suppose you're right - the fact that there aren't so many subscribers means that you can be more social with us.
With big channels it seems like the interactivity from the uploader goes which is a real loss. I always love getting comments from the YouTuber which is why I hardly ever comment on the more popular ones - it sometimes feels like my voice isn't being heard... if that makes sense at all. :/
i love this channel, not more than the VB channel, but in a different almost equal way, for the same reasons you like it. I like that it's smaller right now, and you seem almost more real, even though i know that you are the same amount of real all the time. Plus, i've always liked that you and john make it ok to not be 20 years old on youtube. Love you guys. love your channel(s)
what you're saying is true, but only if the small community stays active, because my second channel has around 3,000 subscribers but I wouldn't expect more than about 50 comments per video on average. I'm not complaining at all, I'm very grateful for the comments and I know I should be more active and engaging if I want my audience to do the same. anyway; I'M THE CREAAAAM.
I'm not sure if I'm really part of the "cream of Nerdfighteria (LOL)", because I'm a relatively new nerdfighter, but I'm really glad I stumbled upon this channel.
Though I'm not sure if my brain is able to add thoughtful comments to the discussion because I seem to always be watching your (and John's) videos only late at night when I'm just about to go to sleep (so that I can go to sleep with happy thoughts :D)
Oh look, another paragraph-long comment. I'm incapable of leaving 4-word comments :D
I completley agree with you Hank. I also love the fact the when I liked this video, 263 people liked the video and no one disliked it. Here it feels like a family within a community...... You should continue with the vlogs after the end of April. :P
Hankschannel is one of my favorite subscriptions of all time for all the reasons you just listed. It brings me back to the really early days of B2.0 when you didn't necessarily have an overarching theme for an entire video. Not that I don't like that! I do and it's awesome and hilarious. But I love this. And I like the low-key-ness of it all. And I like the conversational aspect. And I like your ideas. And I like responding to your ideas.
I've had this talk with catitude, mostly sara cleverestwitch, about how vlogbrothers isn't very talky any more and we miss that. it seems to be a lot of causes or big ideas, which is nice, but we started watching you because it felt more personal. it was an actually discussion, for the most part, between two brothers. now it seems like you guys just talk about your own things all the time. I guess I'm saying that I like seeing you like this again.
Aww... we love you, too, Hank. *huggles* I'm happy I discovered this channel... it's cool to be able to actually talk to you on a topic, rather than making a comment and then crossing my fingers, wondering if you're going to see it and reply (I know its hard when you have a holy crap ton of subscribers to reply to, so I understand if you can't).
Ahahaha, I was about to point out that discussive is not a word, but you beat me to it, Hank. I'm trying to think of a more appropriate word, but I'm not coming up with one.
The one thing I noticed on your videos is that like NO ONE puts a "thumbs" down. And I'm happy because it definitely shows that I'm surrounded by true Nerdfighters and accepting people, and it's a great feeling. I like this little community. There's no spam and (I think) less bad grammar. No more "your gay!" like in the vlogbrothers' channel because it's not so mainstream.
Though, I have wished John would do one too, but that's probably not going to happen.
I think if I actually made videos on here, I'd really only want a couple hundred subscribers. I mean, I don't really want 200,000 random people watching me. And I would like to get to know my subscribers, and even 100 is hard to keep track of.
The old youtube Catch22. Every small channel wants thousands of subs, and then they get it and wish they had a small personal audience. Not even just a youtube thing really. Same thing goes for every celebrity who claws their way to fame, only to then moan about wanting privacy.
I think most of the "vlogging" channels big youtubers are making are silly. As if the mundane things they do are important...But I like yours, because even here, your still talking about ideas.
i dont think im exactly the cream of nerdfighteria. i mean yeah ive been watching your videos since 07 but i never exactly take part in all the little events you guys do. id like to but im far too lazy.
I like the way Michael Aranda goes around this problem. He comments on underated youtubers and brings the dicussion to their channel and doesn't bring a lot of attention to them. The goal isn't to make everyone famous. Even some people I talk to who only have 5000 subs complain about not being able to interect with everyone.
I think that you and Dan Brown are the only people that truly understand the meaning of YouTube. Dan's experimenting with ways to create a community of ordinary, interested individuals via kindofdailyvlogs and his main channel, and I feel that you're doing something similar with your current setup. I think this allows you to be respected as the semi-far-reaching-guy-from-vlogbrothers, yet it allows you to also be a humble, accessible individuals for those who desire it. It's a great balance!
ha! the cream of nerdfighteria in my pants. AHem. Yes, I do sometimes attach to the most juvenile parts of the video. Anyway, I think that its commedable that you are willing to participate in both of these venues. However, I think that vlogbrothers is still a discursive (english geek!) community in that the commenters can talk to each other and discuss. Maybe it isn't so fun for you because you only get to sample a handful of comments, but hey you're creative you found a new way to play. :)
I feel really appreciated by you now. It is nice to know that you want a place with a community small enough to have whole discussions with, where you aren't overwhelmed. Knowing that I am a part of that really makes me feel like I am part of something extra special.
Just to let you know I never thought you were trying to go solo. On this channel you can be more relaxed and not require a goal in every video. It's nice and I am thankful to see another side of you.
As soon as you said point number one I started really wanting fakejohngreen do something with it. It would be hilarious... but then again, everything he does is hilarious.
I do feel like these videos are more brotherhood 2.0-ish without actually being brotherhood 2.0. I agree that you can't just have the random vlogging videos with 200,000 subscribers. So its nice to be able to get my daily brotherhood 2.0 dosage from this channel.
I definitely agree-and I've noticed an interesting phenomenon that occurs regarding the overall tone of comments in larger vs. smaller channels' videos. There tends to be more discussion and interaction within the comments on less subscribed channels than on larger. It makes sense-if you feel as if your ideas are more likely to actually be viewed and thought about, you're more likely to respond. On a more widely viewed video, it's less likely to be read.
Ha ha ha. Cream of nerdfighteria in your pants. That's fabulous. :P I don't remember how I found this channel, but I'm glad I did. I LOVED the video you made about the "insignificant" speck of space. I would really like to watch more videos like that because it makes me feel hopeful about the future. It reminds me that there is still a lot about the world that we don't know (WHICH IS EXCITING!!!) and a tiny bit of me hopes we'll end up like those aboard the starship Enterprise... Yeah. XD
I have to agree with what's already been said- it seems that a smaller but more devoted viewership (word?) does make for more interesting discussions in comments and for more honest videos. I'm glad I found this channel because the viewers who interact actually care about what they say and about the community. It's an awesome and unique thing, especially on YouTube.
You probably won't continue making daily vlogs on this channel after April, but I'm curious to know how often you'll be using this channel as an outlet. Maybe that can be addressed in a video soon?
(and yes, I'm enjoying the smallness of this channel right now. it feels much more personal)
I've always really liked this channel because it's small. It feels special, like we're all in on a secret. I'm really glad that you agree, I've been a bit afraid that you would announce it, which was definitely ruin what makes this channel special.
I like this channel. I feel like you're more yourself. I'm not complaining about the vlogbrothers channel, I still love it to death, but sure has changed in the past few years. And I feel like on this channel, you look more relaxed, like in the early 2.0 videos.
I'm not accusing you of changing. Heck if I had a channel that popular, I think I'd be the first to change and try to please the audience, way more than you do.
So do you feel stressed that the vlogbrothers channel is getting too big?
I just stumbled across this a little while ago and it reminds me a little bit of why I started following the vlogbrothers channel. When something gets as big as the nerdfighter movement, it's really difficult to contain it. There are all sorts of interconnected pockets but there's just too many people to all function as a single body any more. It's nice to have a sense of unity again it's hard to see usernames you recognize on the other channel :P
I'm so glad I stumbled on this channel a while back. i can't remember if YouTube just suggested it to me or if I saw a link, but either way, it doesn't matter. I love these vlogs that you've been doing. :) Thank you for doing VEDA!
I also love the smallness in this channel's size. Granted, on vlogbrothers videos, I still recognize many of the name because of those crazy Cat-I-Tude kids, but here it is a fair deal more of them, and it's nice to see how thoughtful your commenters are. This is probably the ideal channel size, in my opinion, though I am very glad for the success you and John have had on vlogbrothers.
I'm going back to my shyness shell now. Don't expect me out soon.
It reminds me of My Pants and the B2.0 website. I miss that aspect as well: being able to talk with one another, remembering folk, and not feeling that it's necessary to have a bag of tricks--nor expecting them. It seems to me that you and John have been put on a pedestal more and more--for good or bad, I'm not to say. That's just what it seems like to me. I'll be honest, the idea of themes for the vlogbrother videos seems gimmicky (best word I can think to describe it, and it's not a great on)
I think most of us like that this channel is still small, too. These videos are some of the first I've actually commented on because I know that the vlogger -- you -- will actually be reading it, which I think is important. Bigger isn't always better :)
I feel like you guys have almost gotten to the point on Vlogbrothers... where there is too much expectation. Not to say you guys don't make great videos still. I love watching every single one. However, a part of me misses the 2007-esque videos. They were interesting & funny and... well... to put it nicely... less than stellar video wise, but absolutely what made me adore the channel in the first place. I don't hate the direction you guys are going b/c I think it has to happen to stay around.
On some level... this must be what it felt like to be a nerdfighter before nerdfighters were nerdfighters. Hm.
Anyways...
I'd love to know if you feel an obligation to make a certain kind of quality video because you know it's going to be seen by so many people.... thoughts, Hank?
I almost love "famous" users' second channels because the videos are often not as overly produced and more honest, in some ways. Less edits, just plain saying what's on your mind... and that's what I enjoy most about YouTube. :)
I agree with what @bandgeek4747 said. It's kind of awesome having just a smaller community grow. For example, if I said that dragons are not a figment of our imagination and actually do exist, you or someone may actually get the chance to read my statement and argue it. Where as on a large channel, it gets bumped off to the next page. That being said, dragons ARE not a figment of mythology. :)
I do like it here on your channel, Hank, because vlogbrothers has become much more about us as nerdfighters and a lot less about you guys as people. And while I will never denounce what is good for nerdfighteria, I care about you and John and what happens in your lives. To be able to see what goes on day-to-day is a lot of fun.
I too enjoy the smaller audience on this channel. It makes me feel like I have a more direct connection with you and it's interesting to learn about the topics you bring up, especially this month with your VEDA videos. It kinda reminds me of when you had those small Etherpad sessions for Truth or Fail. Fun times!
it's nice to have this channel because this way it feels more like you're co-experiencing someones life. i know that sounds weird, but honestly, isn't that kind of the backbone of youtube? living vicariously through others and learning in the process? it's like the new face of support groups really, because you can search almost anything on youtube and there's something there be it weight loss, humor, watching things get destroyed in blenders and microwaves, makeup, or simply just a vlog.
I have to admit that I much enjoy the style and set up of this vlog, the more personal experience. I know I got my first Hank @reply the other day, and I'll admit I fangirled like a fool.
As much as I love the newer format of the vlogbrother, I do miss the old 'simple' vlog ones. Which is why I am so happy you have this one, where its less formal and more interactive.
I found my first geocach yesterday (and am so ridiculously proud of myself), so thank you so much for introducing me to that!
I'm glad you left the cream joke. It was very enjoyable lol. Oh wow. I think that vlogbrothers still can make you feel like you're a part of something. For sure, I mean, I feel included as a nerdfighter. However, I do know what you are saying about it being nice that it's smaller. Also, as you were saying with youtube making you feel included, it's really true. It feels like I know the youtubers that I watch, like they are talking to me and care what I have to say. For that I love youtube.
i like the style of these videos as well. i had 3 new roommates this year and it was a pleasant surprise to find out that one of them was a nerdfighter (she caught me watching a video in the living room). i hope you continue to post regularly to this channel after april.
I really enjoy these videos, hearing your thoughts in a more relaxed casual way, and like you said the quality of interaction & comments is great and excellent and has made me think pretty hard and differently about things, which is always good :)
Thank you, Hank. You have a very compelling argument for SMALL viewership which I think it's awesome and interesting. So many people want to have a million people view their videos, but you want it more intimate. Thank you for that. I like feeling like I'm part of a community instead of just someone stopping by to watch. It's an amazing feeling. I look forward to your videos every day!
I feel like I'm part of a super secret club whenever I watch one of these videos. If I wasn't brain dead from writing three papers, I'd leave a much more intelligent paragraph for you to read. I would like to say that I do like what you say about YouTube being a place of equals. I think that's why I've stayed on this site; it makes me feel included.
i'm really glad that you are "attainable" :) you and john, and this channel are the reason i believe in the youtube community. you continue to inspire me to think about new things, and to be a better person.
I am going to make this a short comment, and not one of the long, intellectual ones you described. But you are amazing, and I am immensly happy you made this channel, abd that I found it
Lol, "the cream of nerdfighteria" was bad enough before you added the "in your pants." Nonetheless, I'm strangely proud to be among the lot counted in that.
I only just subscribed this week through a related video. I immediately checked to see how many people were subscribed and was happily surprised to see how low it was, because sometimes it seems like many youtubers get caught up in their following, and keeping and pleasing that following, as well as trying to make that following grow.
And you stated the problem with social networking sites. After a certain size of the population the sense of community is lost. At a low population you can make a statement and someone will respond and then someone will respond to that and now you have a discussion among peers. However, if the size of the population grows to large the individual's response can become lost in the sea of others and they can start to feel like an outsider among a group, rather then part of a community.
and at the same time i feel more connected with the people who do comment because they went out of their way to say something in relation to what i did for that day it really gives you a sence that people who go out of their way to comment actually have something to say no matter how small its important and ill always admire you for being you dont try and be me cause it wont work lol dont forget to be awesome we will see you tomorrow smooches mmd
i think you are quite beautiful and interesting and you live in a house and you have internet that makes you wealthy financially there are many people in the world without any of those things , i totally know what you mean when i came on youtube it was mainly for my family and close friends to keep them up to date on whats going on with me but now i have like 300-400 maybe more people i have no idea who they are but they watch my vlogs and that makes me feel good and nobody comments so thats ok
I do not mean to offend you at all, but I liked vlogbrothers more when it was more like your daily vlogs, which makes me very happy you started this channel! :D
Thanks for helping me procrastinate. It's ten past 3 in the morning right now (UK) I still have 1000 words to go on an essay in for tomorrow. Well today now. Hmm.
I could never get overdosed on The Green! Also, I agree that the modest amount of growth is good. It's nice to be part of a smaller community sometimes. One of my favorite things about the 2007 vlogbrothers was the talking--the regular-person, brother-to-brother discussion. I miss that (though of course I still LOVE watching vlogbrothers), and I feel like I'm getting that back watching this.
Oh, and I really appreciate being called the cream of nerdfighteria...though I feel it is undeserved. :)
I think that when people start channels, and I even noticed this with vlogbrothers too. People start out their channels with an idea of how they want their channel to run. They act how they want to act. Unfortunately eventually people gain so many subscribers that they stop running the channel how they want, and start "pandering" to there subscribers.
I agree Hank, I like the climate of this channel much more than vlogbrothers. Especially with what you talked about towards the end, about not just talking anymore. I enjoy this type of video more than the big productions on vbros, because yeah, it's more personal and it's like a conversation and the comments are very thoughtful and interesting to read. It's a lot more of a community.
@HeyWeemsical The other thing to me that's sort of off-putting about the videos of the last year or so is that you and John don't talk to each other in videos anymore. I know it's not 2007 anymore and you guys talk over email, IM, etc., but it's gotten to the point where your videos hardly have anything to do with each other besides "John, I'll see you tomorrow," and that makes it a lot less personal and relatable than it used to be.
@HeyWeemsical The reason a lot of people fell in love with the channel is because of the personality it used to have when you guys just talked, and a lot of that is gone now.
@KelseyAnn49 You think? I don't find John boring at all. I used to, actually, but the more time goes on, the more I wish that John were *my* big brother and I could call him up to chat whenever. :P
Was it just me, or was the background moving? haha
One other reason that I agree with not announcing this channel on vlogbrothers is because it prevents quite a few trolls/giant squids of anger from coming along and ruining it for the 3500 of us.
If i were john with my husky voice i would understand why you like this channel. I like it that when i get home from school stuff and i turn on my laptop and i wath all of my subscription videos i watch this video i see like it was posted 4 hours ago and it has like 3,000 views but unlike with raywilliamjohnson i see it was posted 2 hours ago and has 856,239 views. the less people that know about it makes me feel like im part of the discussion.
How's the Truth Or Fail factfinders thing going? I submitted a fact, and it got accepted. My first one! Anyways, /I/ like how this is all small and such. It's better.
The reason I really love this channel is because it reminds me of the reason I began watching vlogbrothers in the first place. I found you guys nearly 3 years ago, only 6 months in to Brotherhood 2.0 and it was just fascinating for reasons I couldn't understand back then (especially as a 14 year old) to just watch the two of you converse via video (sorry for the alliteration there). I was also so happy to be a member of what seemed like a small niche community in the huge YT one.
In 2008, when I first found nerdfighteria I was thrilled to be a part of something that understood why I freaked out over Harry Potter and who didn't constantly say "You READ? like, for FUN? why would you do that?" But then after a while I felt like nerdfighteria was getting a bit more crowded.
@deirdrelovesvampys But here I feel like its te quiet little corner of nerdfighteria that just sits and talks and enjoys each others presence. Like we're sitting at our own little table in the cafeteria of nerdfighteria. It's nice and I really do enjoy the videos you make here, Hank. You haven't forgotten to be awesome, and by the looks of all of the comments below me, neither have the other 3500 subscribers.
hahah, looking at all the comments make me feel like I need to leave a paragraph long comment. umm. I agree with everything you said Hank and I hope John doesn't think that because John is kind of a known person outside of Vlogbrothers and I think you have the right to do that too. I know you have ecogeek but that's more about awareness than your opinions on things. am i right, am i right?
This really feels like a more personally Hank-teraction than vlogbrothers, not to say you don't talk to us on Vlogbrothers, just that this seems so unproductionized. (thats not a word, is it?)
haha nice, the cream of nerdfighteria in your pants :) oh hank you are very funny. I really enjoy these videos because it does feel a lot more personal and more free [being not scripted]. I like the community of hankschannel, one of the reasons is that it is a lot closer [the reasons in your video]
Aww. Angsty we-have-lost-out-purpose Hank. Can it be 2007 again? For the record I know you'd never try to un-Siamese yourself from John but I can't imagine what seeing the changes in vlogbrothers has done to you.
Hank, if you tell yourself that you are not unattainably beautiful or interesting, then you won't be. (I believe. You are totally unattainably beautiful. Don't forget that.) Also, I really like that you feel comfortable enough around us to just chat like this. One of the things that really got me into watching you guys do your thing was that I commented on one of your videos not too long ago, and you actually responded. It reminded me that you are people too, not just a voice on an ipod. :)
Also, I typically get about 7 comments on each of my videos, each maybe a sentence long. But one time an awesome nerdfighter left a super-thoughtful paragraphs-long comment on one of my videos, and I was in awe, but at the same time I was sort of... overwhelmed. xD It's probably a good thing that I'm not hitting it big on YouTube.
I was actually thinking about this very topic the other day. I am so glad that I am not the only one who feels that conversation and personal interaction are stifled as communities grow large.
Thank you for providing us an environment to have these interactions. It is rather refreshing!
I was thinking about how much I was enjoying these videos the other day, for exactly the reasons you just said! When I started watching Vlogbrothers back in 2007, you responded to my emails personally, and occasionally refered to things I had done by name, and that was exciting, to be a part of something. I think that these have brought back that feeling of closeness within the community. It is also great to hear you talking more freely about your life, that is the thing I miss most about B2.0
I'm glad I found this channel, because it reminds me of old vlogbrothers videos when you got to just talk about whatever. Not that I don't like them now, I really do! You're always fun! Maybe you should just do videos every weekday like wheezywaiter...GOOD IDEA???
I don't mean to say that you guys aren't honest on vlogbrothers now. But like you said, with a bigger audience, you do have to edit yourselves more, and you can't say things like "the cream of nerdfighteria." xD
I mean, I only have 150 subscribers, and I edit the things I say a LOT.
Ahhh, the new YouTube layout keeps crapping out my Internet so it is very difficult to leave a long comment and read the other ones. :( This comment is coming in an unknown number of parts.
Anyway, I love the small community here at hankschannel. It reminds me a bit of the early B2.0 days. I know you and John always talk about how bad your early videos were, but my friends and I think they were some of the best ones! Because with such a small audience, it was more personal and honest.
... oh dear. The cream of nerdfighteria in your pants. eep.
I think this is just as fascinating as vlogbrothers. maybe even more so. I enjoy feeling like you're talking just to us. I think John would understand completely. Thanks for these videos. I feel closer to nerdfighteria because of them. =)
maybe you should encourage john to make an extra channel so he can do things likke book readings and writter info and advice he could have his own and then it would even it all out!>!? and you are unatanably intersting and smart and ecofriendly and nerdtastic!! LOL
Hey, great video as always. I'd like to know how you've found VEDA. Has it been as difficult as you thought it would be? Because from this side of the camera that hasn't seemed the case at all. In a way hankschannel has become more like a diary than a garden variety vlog that you can pool your days musings into (or is that a vlog). And I'd like to think you're enjoying talking to us considering how long the videos can (which I love btw).
Anyway, I'd like to get your take on how VEDA is going.
I'm glad that I stumbled on this channel too, it's good to be appreciated! I feel like there are more people on here, what with the longer comments and lack of "OMG LOL PANTS" comments.
And I do not get the feeling that you're going to Diva-Out on John either. Either of you going terribly solo would be like having marshmellows or chocolate or graham crackers on their lonesome. All good on their own, but amazing together!
... so it isn't a perfect metaphor, but you get the idea. :P
I like this channel because it can be longer and more what you think. Also, with related videos, your videos are starting to show up on Vlogbrothers, so you're probably going to get another few spurts of subscribers.
Hank, I love your new lense because if you look in the background it looks like your bookcase is rounded and slanty which make everything seem slightly loopy ... which makes everything awesome and awesome is what nerdfighteria is
That would be really cool if you could just say hi to this comment, and if you could watch my vid using your "I Guess it All Makes Sense at the End" song (I hope you don't mind that I used your song, but if you want to remove it, I understand) and comment on it.
(I just realized that is a BIG run-on sentence, but who cares)
John watched the first 24 seconds and the unsubscribed.

DFTBA. :)

SnickersInTheBarn 1 year ago
BeatThePiper is right. As much as i love the vlogbrothers videos the comments have been becoming more and more "i can haz cheezbuurger"-ish. I understand a majority of that audience is teenaged girl and you kind of have to cater to that demographic sometimes-So I get why you would want another channel where you can be you and not be the hank that people expect to see in a Vlogbrothers video. You don't have to always be "on."
tasteslikepaintnwood 1 year ago
@tasteslikepaintnwood That makes sense. Maybe vlobrothers should just do what they like and if someone doesn't like it, they can just unsubscribe. I'm a teenaged girl and I love both of these channels, but some people wouldn't want that type of...normality? Anyway, I'm all for vlogbrothers going back to just regular style video if they want to. :)
SnickersInTheBarn 1 year ago 4

I usually don't do this on videos with lots of views because there are just far too many comments that are just trash/spam/not revelant.
tazamagaz 1 year ago
It's sad, but at least it's not everywhere. :)

what you're saying is true, but only if the small community stays active, because my second channel has around 3,000 subscribers but I wouldn't expect more than about 50 comments per video on average.

It's really a win/win/win/win/win situation.

The one thing I noticed on your videos is that like NO ONE puts a "thumbs" down. There's no spam and (I think) less bad grammar. No more "your gay!" like in the vlogbrothers' channel because it's not so mainstream.

I like the way Michael Aranda goes around this problem. He comments on underated youtubers and brings the dicussion to their channel and doesn't bring a lot of attention to them.

jamesgirl208 1 year ago
I feel really appreciated by you now. It is nice to know that you want a place with a community small enough to have whole discussions with, where you aren't overwhelmed. Knowing that I am a part of that really makes me feel like I am part of something extra special.
Just to let you know I never thought you were trying to go solo. On this channel you can be more relaxed and not require a goal in every video. It's nice and I am thankful to see another side of you.

(And I'm enjoying this channel :D)

Ha ha ha. Cream of nerdfighteria in your pants. That's fabulous. :P I don't remember how I found this channel, but I'm glad I did. I LOVED the video you made about the "insignificant" speck of space.

I'm not accusing you of changing. Heck if I had a channel that popular, I think I'd be the first to change and try to please the audience, way more than you do.

I always support sexual jokes, Mr. Hank. ;)

I like these laid-back videos where you just share what's on your mind.
sandwichperson 1 year ago
It reminds me of My Pants and the B2.0 website. I miss that aspect as well: being able to talk with one another, remembering folk, and not feeling that it's necessary to have a bag of tricks--nor expecting them. It seems to me that you and John have been put on a pedestal more and more--for good or bad, I'm not to say. That's just what it seems like to me. I'll be honest, the idea of themes for the vlogbrother videos seems gimmicky (best word I can think to describe it, and it's not a great on)
NF321 1 year ago
I think most of us like that this channel is still small, too. These videos are some of the first I've actually commented on because I know that the vlogger -- you -- will actually be reading it, which I think is important. Bigger isn't always better :)

Are you particularly interested in responding to this? This is in no way insightful.

CleverestWitch2188 1 year ago
On some level... this must be what it felt like to be a nerdfighter before nerdfighters were nerdfighters. Hm.
Anyways...
I'd love to know if you feel an obligation to make a certain kind of quality video because you know it's going to be seen by so many people.... thoughts, Hank?
CleverestWitch2188 1 year ago

Fun times!
bandgeek4747 1 year ago
also, i think it'd be nice if you did a "pet intro" for one of your VEDA days and show us all your pets and their adorableness.

it's nice to have this channel because this way it feels more like you're co-experiencing someones life. i know that sounds weird, but honestly, isn't that kind of the backbone of youtube? living vicariously through others and learning in the process? it's like the new face of support groups really, because you can search almost anything on youtube and there's something there be it weight loss, humor, watching things get destroyed in blenders and microwaves, makeup, or simply just a vlog.
yellowjeep89 1 year ago

WhyHelloShelby 1 year ago
i like the style of these videos as well. i had 3 new roommates this year and it was a pleasant surprise to find out that one of them was a nerdfighter (she caught me watching a video in the living room). i hope you continue to post regularly to this channel after april.

Lol, "the cream of nerdfighteria" was bad enough before you added the "in your pants." Nonetheless, I'm strangely proud to be among the lot counted in that.
I only just subscribed this week through a related video. I immediately checked to see how many people were subscribed and was happily surprised to see how low it was, because sometimes it seems like many youtubers get caught up in their following, and keeping and pleasing that following, as well as trying to make that following grow.
xvicklesx 1 year ago
And you stated the problem with social networking sites. After a certain size of the population the sense of community is lost. At a low population you can make a statement and someone will respond and then someone will respond to that and now you have a discussion among peers. However, if the size of the population grows to large the individual's response can become lost in the sea of others and they can start to feel like an outsider among a group, rather then part of a community.

HeyWeemsical 1 year ago
@HeyWeemsical The other thing to me that's sort of off-putting about the videos of the last year or so is that you and John don't talk to each other in videos anymore. I know it's not 2007 anymore and you guys talk over email, IM, etc., but it's gotten to the point where your videos hardly have anything to do with each other besides "John, I'll see you tomorrow," and that makes it a lot less personal and relatable than it used to be.
HeyWeemsical 1 year ago
@HeyWeemsical The reason a lot of people fell in love with the channel is because of the personality it used to have when you guys just talked, and a lot of that is gone now.

@deirdrelovesvampys I love the people in it, but Ifelt like there were still a couple of gian squids of anger oming in and ruining it for everyone.

You haven't forgotten to be awesome, and by the looks of all of the comments below me, neither have the other 3500 subscribers.
deirdrelovesvampys 1 year ago
hahah, looking at all the comments make me feel like I need to leave a paragraph long comment. umm. I agree with everything you said Hank and I hope John doesn't think that because John is kind of a known person outside of Vlogbrothers and I think you have the right to do that too. I know you have ecogeek but that's more about awareness than your opinions on things. am i right, am i right?

haha nice, the cream of nerdfighteria in your pants :) oh hank you are very funny.

It is also great to hear you talking more freely about your life, that is the thing I miss most about B2.0
weaselgirl 1 year ago
I'm glad I found this channel, because it reminds me of old vlogbrothers videos when you got to just talk about whatever. Not that I don't like them now, I really do! You're always fun! Maybe you should just do videos every weekday like wheezywaiter...GOOD IDEA???
ermzgracieisawesome 1 year ago
I don't mean to say that you guys aren't honest on vlogbrothers now. But like you said, with a bigger audience, you do have to edit yourselves more, and you can't say things like "the cream of nerdfighteria." xD
I mean, I only have 150 subscribers, and I edit the things I say a LOT.
whitefluffyhat 1 year ago
Ahhh, the new YouTube layout keeps crapping out my Internet so it is very difficult to leave a long comment and read the other ones. :( This comment is coming in an unknown number of parts.
Anyway, I love the small community here at hankschannel. It reminds me a bit of the early B2.0 days. I know you and John always talk about how bad your early videos were, but my friends and I think they were some of the best ones! Because with such a small audience, it was more personal and honest.
whitefluffyhat 1 year ago
... oh dear. The cream of nerdfighteria in your pants. eep.
I think this is just as fascinating as vlogbrothers. maybe even more so. I enjoy feeling like you're talking just to us. I think John would understand completely. Thanks for these videos. I feel closer to nerdfighteria because of them. =)
