Shades of Caruso! One of the best Canios I've ever heard, in every way - beauty of voice, intensity, phrasing, language, magnificent high A - it's all there!
I enjoyed that very much, more would be welcome. In passing I will add I also enjoyed the bit from the last act of Saza. Also I have listened and enjoyed Aprile Millo singing for many years. J.K.
Very fine, even on this older recording of the aria here he sounds to me here anyhow somewhat like another Giovanni! Giovanni Martinelli the great tenor who sang such a wonderful Otello with my late friend Stella Roman. Aprile surely has this talent from him like others. BOTH Bjorling and Shicoff, singers who had fathers who sang, thanks for this wonderful powerful Canio. Regards from Chicago, Steve
Thank you. I agree it was a fabulous and beautiful instrument. Also a first rate fellow in every way. In his younger years, and more lyric time he was a popular member of the NYCO singing for at least 5 years there with marvelous press and success. In Italy to study he had several great breaks after this recording becoming quite successful in Italy.
OPen heart surgery and a continuing heart ailment stopped his career but he never stopped singing and he sang like this till the day he died at 71! He sang to me over the phone from his hospital barely able to breathe- god bless him- but wanted me to have his swan song!! A great humor and very brave in the face of death, he was my hero. A hero with a gorgeous voice.
@A7sogno He had undoubtedly a great voice. For my ears he sounds preferable to Tucker and Peerce, just to mention a few of the stars of the era.And he is one of the few who manages a convincing sob at the end of Canios' aria,
Interesting to know, did his father also posess an operatic voice?
It is interesting how voice tends to run in families.
Thanks for this wonder. Giovanni Millo sings this marvellously. As you say, he shows a really "golden tenorial splendor". Here we see where the great Aprile Millo learnt.
That is a man's voice! I guess big voices run in the family

Fabulous voice, and performance and a very handsome man. Another great tenor that we missed enjoying, with the other greats of the last century.
