But 's also because of the cheap vinyl they used to press what was considered "off market." That's why "mainstream" 78 rpm records from the 1930s don't sound as scratchy after a similar (or more) numbers of play. It's not about the recording. It's about the money the record companies were willing to spend on pressings.
@swiftyswiftone - remember, the reason these great records sound so messed up is because the record companies used the cheapest vinyl for what they called "race" records. Wasn't meant to last. Didn't they get it wrong!

This not correct Those were recorded By THE PARAMOUNT company and wree played and played and played .Very few copies survived
