On a serious note, it doesn't. Generally, you have a base and a laser system, and when the laser or light source is cut at a specific point the base will emit a sound. Kinda like a keyboard when you press a key. 'Course, I'm probably missing something here. :3

There is Tesla, but that's electricity. Still shiny though. :D

But anyway, for light or laser harps, the base is generally a small computer. Think of a midi keyboard, how you press a button and it makes a sound. The light harps kinda work in the same way. The wavy motion is most likely just a turbulence field in the animation program, but light can be refracted to get a similar effect. :3

i actually saw this when it first came out and i was much younger. i like it 10x better now because i understand how beautiful it is, and the amount of work that goes into this stuff. even the lengths of the beams are correct for chords of music, you can see the beams waver during vibratos, something i used to not understand.
