I could not disagree more. The truss rod is NOT used and has nothing to do whatsoever with action. If you make truss rod adjustments to set the action then you do not know what it is for and you are mucking up the action worse. It is only to make a warped neck straight or add a back bow so when the strings are tuned up the neck is straight.
@592220 while i agree the bridge and nut are where action adjustment actually takes place you can't so the truss rod is not used for action whatsoever. if you're neck bowed either way too far you'll never have a good action no matter what you do. Rookies just shouldn't even look at the truss rod.
Hi, I have for 15 years a Gibson M3 with the Floyd Rose system. Lately most strings often detune to a higher tone. I wonder how this is possible. Do you have an explanation?
@Aristotelezz Sounds like your Spring tension is greater than your String tension, often the result of changing to lighter gauge strings. Go to the springs on the back of the guitar, and loosen the two screws that hold the "spring claw" to the body....loosen them equally with each other, and observe the "float" of the bridge plate on the top of the guitar....if your spring tension is matched to your strings, your bridge should be about parallel with the top of the guitar (or with the strings.)
@upr1ght Thanx for you answer! I'll see what I shall do with it. At this moment it is only the low E-string that detunes to a higher tone. The others stay intune.
@Aristotelezz Sounds like your Spring tension is greater than your String tension, often the result of changing to lighter gauge strings. take the bridge out for a second , use 11 pennies and some dollar store tape this will get you into standard with 10-46 (regular gauge) strings.
its 100% reversable and incredibly cheap , pennies will give you more tone and fullness and sustain like that guy says... think Floyd Bigblock but 39$ cheaper. I spread 50 cents worth of pennies around it.
If you don't want to commit to a set trem (you may want to sell on your guitar) then the Tremol-no looks good, I haven't got one but there's loads of videos on installing and using them. They don't use glue or anything and you can change your guitar back to it's original condition without taking off string or taking out the tremolo unit itself.
Isn't the whole point of a floyd rose system , so you CAN pull back and Dive Bomb? What's the sense of doing these upgrades to Prevent you from Pulling back?
Cool video. Although, I do prefer using a block of hard maple or mahogony glued to the wood of the body instead of gluing metal to the block of the trem. That's just in case you ever wanted to switch back to floating or if you ever sell it. Bob's right, the sustain and tone using metal on the block does have a slight advantage, but the tone and sustain I achieved using the wood was still FAR better than the floating trem.
it's always a question of balance between springs and strings if you want to float the bridge, flaws will always be the culprit to inconsistent nominal position,,,and if a string breaks, odds are it's either cheap string or consistent with a flaw causing it to break especially if it is always the same string,,,this is pretty much a permanent solution for down or up chucking, but a good one i suppose
this is a great video. I used to pop strings live a lot and had that detuning problem... I learned this the hard way.. wish i had seen this vid before!
why would you block your tremolo!? lol... but i would recommend a kahler tremolo. you can turn a screw on it that turns it into a fixed bridge, if you want a to have a tremolo and a bridge. but wtc? if you block your floyd, it's just like turning it into a fixed brdge.,,, but you can't use the tremolo anymore >.<
I would highly recommend using a simple device that you can install on your guitar, check out the "Tremolno". It'll save you a lot of time and has different features for the whammy people.
yeah those are the colored DR's. i wouldn't suggest using them for a floyd rose, the guitar will go out of tune a lot sooner because of the lack of friction from the paint on the strings, plus they look cool for the first day, but then the paint scrathes off in patches within one practice.
Anybody know why on an original 8-s floyd......when i lock the strings down in the trem saddle.....no matter how tight i get it,it still pops loose & i gott arestring that string again. HeLp???
kept fallig out, then i stuffed the whole chamber with epoxy putty. even better tone, but that's quite permanent now. if it breaks i will probably have to throw away the whole axe, but that tone man...! killer. rg 320 fm sounds like the really expensive sigantures now. glued in the neck as well, and replaced the pickups..
k so i have a question. i recently installed a new pickup to my Ibanez RG350EX guitar, and now shits all over the place.. most concern is the fact that the edge floating tremolo bridge has sunk.. my question is that could i push the tremolo arm down to a desired amount, slip a couple washers in between the bridge and the wood of the body to keep it in place while adjusting shit and tuning shit? ive been told to slip stuff under the bridge.. but this idea would work right?
Because not everybody is a Br00t4l metal head who's style consists of nothing but pinch harmonics followed by jacking off their trems. If you never use a trem there is no reason to have one because they are a pain in the ass to maintain and they sap your guitar's tone and sustain. Still, most guitarists are forced to get guitars with trems because all of the fixed bridge guitars are crappy mid to entry level models.
I have a Jackson that goes flat everytime,I've had it to several guitar shops and they can't fix it...will this fix keep it from going flat? It looks as if it will keep it from going sharp but not flat...I don't want to spend the money or do this and it still go flat....I would really appreciate a response either way...PS: You're an AWESOME guitarist.....Ray
It's a dinky I think not to sure any more I put it away after no one could fix it...I asked if Jackson would take it back under warranty and they wouldn't...
Is it just me, or has no one ever broken a string (apart from doing stupid stuff like heating up strings, and holding the whole guitar on just 2 strings etc)
TL;DR has anyone never broken a string unless it was intended
So ..After having played guitar for a awhile blocked with metal..I have found that you can hear the tremelo "clunk" as the metal block makes contact with the body..Very annoying ..And I dont mean doing a dive bomb and then just letting go of bar and have it smack back..JUst a normal use of bar..So metal may be better for tone and sustain transfer..the "clunk" noise is enough to use wood
You buy it floyd-rosed when you think divebombs etc are cool and block it once you get tired of dive bombs and having to adjust the springs every time you change the strings
Depends on who made the Floyd..Most have 3 differnet height saddles..Shortest is for the 2 E's..then A&b,then D&G..Some have a little shim under the saddle..and some have the radius
on the base plate..Seen Jackson Floyd with that..
its very easy, its just a little thing with a scew that comes with your guitar. you put it over a hole in the nut that you scew in with an allen wrench
actually i've heard its a real pain in the ass project. you have to be very careful and you'll have to do some woodwork. if ur not good at that, i'd calla luthier
You might like a guitar and the way it sounds but it may have a floating trem. That means it can travel in either direction, so you can dive bomb or up the pitch. This stops the latter, he says in the video that it increases sustain, which I had not thought about, but if you are a player that has a style where your hand sometimes rests or touchs the trem, you will affect the pitch of your guitar. This stops that.
This is pretty pointless if you actually use your tremelo, Ive never ever had a problem with sustain on a tremelo, you just have to set it up properly, theres tons of setup vids on youtube for it. If you want a stop tailpiece buy a guitar that doesnt have a tremelo, theres more guitars without tremelos in more variations than there are with tremelos. Not only that, You'll have alot less stuff going on, stop tailpiece is way easier.
Awesome tip and greatly appriciated,my Dean Splittail went on Ebay because of the floating Floyd,I installed a Tremol-No and still no sustain, after watching this video and following Bob's tip I must say that my Dean Splittail is NO LONGER for sale, thanks Bob/Youtube.
2. Block Tremelo so that's it's parallel to the guitar body.
3. Because it's now blocked (like a stop tremelo, I.E Strats, most PRS, Honestly mostly strats), You tune it (Stand E, Drop, Half step, whatever).
4. Tighten Nut Bolts, unblock, fine tune (on rose itself.
Enjoy!!!
Sometimes u might have to make intonations adjust. based on tremelo springs. Sharp? Loosen strings. Always use light gauge. Never over .45 Open to corrections.
Well, some have the edge III. Others, specifically the new S models, have ZR bridges that move on ball barrings. But yeah, it's Ibanez's own design what ever the case. Not floyd rose.
pls help me i'm in urgent! i have a floyd rose. when i lock the nut. i use divebombs it never detunes. when i bend shit man detunes! when i tune again its okay to bend. when i divebomb detunes! help me!
The only thing I can think of is that the strings are stretching below the nut (over the neck and body) and not in the headstock area. Make sure your strings are good and stretched out before you lock them in place.
That isn't a problem, thats kind of how they operate. On any floating trem, when you bend a string, the tension on the strings increases and the tremolo begins to dive forward. So the string you are playing is in tune, but your other strings go out of tune.
hey flrider7, I have the answer to your problem. Check out the guitar project on my channel and you'll see a way to turn any tremolo into a true hardtail string through.
I tried this on a cheap floating floyd rose axe and even though you can no longer pull up for squealing, it improved the overall tone and resonance of the guitar. I only needed to tweak the height adjustment slightly.
can i have your email add? i have a little problem regarding on my guitar.. Ibanez "s-series" and i don't know the measurement of the two metal supporting the Floyd Rose. sometimes the strings touches the fret when the F.R is level to the body, when its not level, its ok. but i am bothered that it is not level on the body and its too high.. i can send pictures if you cant understand.. thnx
what is blocking a floyd rose? what does it do ???

That isn't a problem, thats kind of how they operate. On any floating trem, when you bend a string, the tension on the strings increases and the tremolo begins to dive forward. So the string you are playing is in tune, but your other strings go out of tune.

hey flrider7, I have the answer to your problem. Check out the guitar project on my channel and you'll see a way to turn any tremolo into a true hardtail string through.
I done it with an RG of mine :)

I tried this on a cheap floating floyd rose axe and even though you can no longer pull up for squealing, it improved the overall tone and resonance of the guitar. I only needed to tweak the height adjustment slightly.

I don't understand why you want to block a tremolo when tremolo-less guitars are available.

because a low profile trem is closer to the body making it more comfortable. Also having the nut locked down give better tuning stability.

i was wondering if this blocks it from just pulling up or diving or both and if not is there a way that you can?

Ibanez "s-series" and i don't know the measurement of the two metal supporting the Floyd Rose. sometimes the strings touches the fret when the F.R is level to the body, when its not level, its ok. but i am bothered that it is not level on the body and its too high.. i can send pictures if you cant understand.. thnx
