@ riv4life618,,, u don't know much about country if you don't think Barbara was around in it's "heyday." Country's "heyday," isn't about when YOU loved it or when YOU were young, and i mean YOU in the general term, not directed at you personally... as ppl get older they HATE on the current crop, celebrities and the public alike, such as you are doing.... furthermore if ppl think barbara or tayler or Shania or whorever IS POP OR ROCK.. you obviously have NO idea what POP or ROCK truly sounds like
FURTHERMORE - Taylor Swift's music is following the SAME county cosmopolitan/pop crossover path as Barbara helped to forge back in her heyday; And in fact, she sounds more like pop/rock & roll than Barbara's music did. Educate yourselves, and speak from a non-biased position in the future, or else you just make yourselves look like idiots.
You stupid fucktards! I'm only 30 yrs old, but if you can't remember as far back as I can? Lemme just remind you that Barbara Mandrell was THE FIRST female to win the CMA Entertainer Of The Year award TWICE - and Taylor Swift is now THE SECOND, FOLOWING in Barbara's footsteps. If that doesn't make her a legend or give her the right to speak about Taylor's success in country music, then you're just ignorant. And also remember that in the late 70s-early 90s ALL country songs sounded like pop music
"Barbara Mandrell, who was one ofthe most important figures in Country Music" hahahaha If she is that, then George & Loretta must be Gods because they were a hell of a lot more popular, talented, & important COUNTRY Music than she was. Love how she considers herself in a league with Loretta, Dolly, & Tammy!!! That made my day!!! lol. Of course she loves Taylor Swift, she was the original pop tart who billed herself Country (tho @ least she had some vocal talent tho, TS has NONE
You don't have to be able to sing anymore to become a famous singing icon! That's what sucks about today. I'm all about change but, if your gonna get the country vocalist award of the year you better be able to sing. I have not purchased a single country song since she won. Just lost faith in the industry
There is room for the traditional sound and there's room for a new sound. New sounds arise because new artists and even older ones have to do something that sets them apart from the crowd. The pop-influenced country can open up many people to traditional country, so crossover is a good thing.
Barbara did a lot of traditional country, as well as pop-influenced country. At the top of her game, she was making hit after hit and selling a ton of records. She had her style and made it pay off.
uh...I thought B.M. was going to talk herself.. and wow...@leftfieldmind...you do have some opinions. I Found this through Dave Dudley, hmmm... I guess musical evolution can go both ways with the young. Fortunately you all now have Tears of the Moosechaser to save country music from itself.
Barbara is truly one of the last LEGENDS of country hay day, no pun intended,,, she was the bridge that brought country from Loretta and Dolly to REBA and without a bridge NOTHING grows.... chew on that when you dis Barbara again.....
it's like tv and movies, if you don't like it, CHANGE it or turn it off... there will be a day when Carrie will be old news and ppl will WISH she were on top and hate who is NEW because they sound to POP.... If you think Carrie and Taylor are POP, you really don't know what is POP today,,, buy a Keisha album then get back to me if you still think country ladies sound POP.... again, proves my point about evolving,,, pop has,,, and even Shania at her top was not POP, she just looked it.....
there is something for everyone,,, Barbara is what SAVED country historically... ppl grew tired of the whinning twangy sound by the 80's and she took the doors that Loretta and Dolly opened and BLEW them off the hinges... NO artist aside from Reba and Garth have matched her entertainment value... a whole concert of standing there lifeless and singing like a dying cat is up your woohoo is the norm of yesteryear .... in music you evolve or DIE,,,,, it's time the audience did too
wow to say Barbara almost ruined country, wow.... each generation wants to HANG ON and won't except change.. ppl OPEN your hears, these girls do have country voices, even Barbara, it's the instruments that are used, it's young girls getting up and buying records . music MUST evolve as Barbara states.. I'm sorry but every genre changes, country is no different, GET OVER IT...... LORETTA and TAMMY are from the 60 and 70.. of course Barbara was different 80 and 90... ppl need to grow up musically
I don't like the way these jerks diss George! I loved Barbara early in her career, but certainly don't agree with her assessment of Country Music. Taylor Swift might have been better if she'd grown up listening to Country Music! Most of todays so called country artists grew up listening to rock and pop. They wouldn't know a country song if it hit them in the face. The so called fans who are supporting radio today are rock and pop fans who've hi-jacked country radio! I miss the old stars.
@DontForgetToJog I agree with u 100% that Barbara Mandrell was way more Pop than Country, especially compared to Loretta & Tammy. I agree with George Jones totally that these kids have destroyed what country music was all about. I agree with Wynonna as well that Taylor winning as much as she has is way much too soon... she's not THAT good. I miss the old, REAL country!

Johnny Cash was ostracized at first because he was considered rock and roll!

i think that Wynonna (having won EOY at 19) has every right to share her opinion.
The addage never judge a man until you have walked in his shoes is perfectly appropriate.

I bet it makes Taylor and Carrie and Kellie happy to hear that!
It seems like almost every country singer is, at one time, viewed as someone who is about to "destroy" country music.
