nice vid man, i have a question about the ejection, i just bought a 1873 carbine and i have to do the same thing and reach in the chamber to extract the shell, do you know exactly whats wrong with the gun?
Whats with the ejection on this gun? Ive seen other videos where it launched the shell out of the chamber without you having to reach in and take it out.
@Iraqveteran8888 Yes sir that was me. and I can prove it. you gave the barrel of fugly to me. Oh, and I must thank you once again for the great time me and my dad had when we were there. Thank you Sir.
@lvcsslacker It lets you know it's there when you pull the trigger, but not in the same way a .300 WIN MAG will. Recoil is not bad at all. K98 is much worse.
God damn man, that's lovely. Now, it'd even be better if it wasn't sporterized, but I wished I had the money to just go and collect these. Alot of my friends look at me weird for liking pre-1950s/60s weaponry, but there is a whole lot of story in a weapon that's older than your grandparents.
great i like these old guns, got to shoot some real old bench busters in oklahoma last year, these old dudes were shooting open sights at 400yds and hitting the bullseye EVERY shot! all blackpowder loads at the bench, great bunch of gentlemen, all great snipers, made me think of billy dixon!
Lots of potential in this rifle. I'd personally be inclined to ditch the rubber recoil pad for a nicely checkered steel plate. Then I'd install an older-style front sight. Make it more like a true 19th century sporter.
i defiently like the springfield trapdoor because it was the first military service rifle too fire brass cartridges, it defiently is a bigger step than the old muzzleloader before it
The 1884 Springfield has got to be one of the all time favorite single shot rifles made that I know of.It's just as good a hunter as it was when it was produced. Nice thing is the ablity to change it to a percussion loader for paper cartridges by changing the breach block. Thank you for posting and sharing this video. :)
You should get a external microphone with a wind-sleeve or whatever it is, that reduces such noise! And get two cameras! One focused on you, and one on the target, for instant gratification! We can see your particular shots hit! :D Come on, russle up some quality, man, you're all about it with the guns!
great video but i think there the ejector is broken or weak springs, my 1873 Springfield trapdoor rifle original 125yrs old still ejects the brass out of the gun. My load for mine is 500gr cast spitser over 24gr of XMP-5744 great for 500yds or further.
Nice rifle, but I remember reading somewhere that with the copper cases they don't extract properly and in some instances, they are know to ripe the rims off them.
Nice video, but,I hate those damn rests things!I saw one that holds the entire gun for you -- all you'd have to do is point the rifle at your target. Why would anyone want to use that?!
@LordBehemoth67 um, so you can properly sight it in, and if your handloading see how your shells are doing...is your gun experiance limited to call of duty?
@Seamus449 Will be doing quite a bit of casting for this rifle, so I'm sure more videos are in the pipeline. It's a blast to shoot, so I'm sure you'll see more of it.
@SouthSurreyMilitia Yes and no. I have seen Trapdoors that toss them out automatically when the "trap" is opened, but this one does not. I haven't looked at the mechanism closer, but it could have a worn part or similar that needs replacing.

Or if you were commenting on how he was pulling the cartridge out on his own he was doing that so he didn't have to find the cartridge later

@TACTICALboom if yours ejects the cartridge on it's own chances are you don't actually have an original 1884 Springfield

Just bought a Trapdoor made in 1879 this morning, and there's only 3 flaws:
-No rear sight
-Original stock, but the wood's cut down to about where yours is
-Receiver is bulged and gutted(Chamber is nonexistent, one of our ancient 500 grain shells nearly slid into the barrel)
Good project for me to work on.

The bench rest is used to test the accuracy of your weapon/ammunition, by taking the "you" factor out of the equation.
