Russia has several advantages over America (Boeing) and Europe (Airbus). All of the superstructure is made domestically, paid for in local currency and sold in dollars, being the biggest and most obvious.

As a pilot, I can tell you that whenever you see winglets on modern aircraft, it signals a compromise in wing design and efficiency was made. 30 years ago, they were good due to manufacturing limits, now you don't see them on new A/C very often at all. The SuperJet is a very good design.

Actually, I am. I'm also an A&P, and was an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force. Winglets were widely used before raked wing technology was feasible. Raked wings effectively increase surface area. Nowadays, you'll mostly see them on older models, such as 747's, even if newly manufactured, since it's economically more efficient to add them, than to design a new wing; And for specific purposes, such as shorter ranges and higher lift, and to reduce wing tip vortices, such as 737's. @bhm1712 I really can't think of an heavy commercial aircraft designed since about early 90's, that had wiglets in the design.The first I ever heard of them was on Burt Rutan's VariEze in the 70's, and the first I ever actually saw them was at Eglin AFB on a KC-135, that was 1980. Part II-end.

Interesting to see a modern design with no winglet tips. These are very common now because they improve cruise efficiency by reducing vortex drag from the wing tips. I wonder why they did not use them?

To be honest, on the face of it, it looks like a nice aircraft and the project did not go into big troubles as 787 & A400M did. Even some of the Airbus employees I bump into in the local pubs around Filton site whispered:"Emm, superjet seems to be a nice one." About the winglets, they will add them if the need is justified. After all, the addition of winglet is not a hard thing to do, Russians definitely have the capability for that.
