What many people seem to miss, is that his new support of Gay Marriage isn't actually a new stance. They cite his support of civil unions but fail to point to the fact that he applied that to all couples. All Federal legal benefits would be under a civil union. The term marriage would be left to the states, or preferably the people. In his Yowie chat with GOProud, his explicitly stated reasons centered around the bureaucratic costs of editing all the lawbooks.

@drekfletch Rather than defining Civil Union and changing all instances of Marriage to Civil Union, he now advocates taking the easy route and defining Marriage.

There is a Federal need for such contracts because of all the interstate issues that arise, including things like child custody and hospitalization/care.
