Absolutely amazing footage and now so clear, these are the times my grandparents grew up in, a truly awesome window into their world, thanks for posting.
This was captivating, especially with that music, thank you. There's something about watching the faces of people who dont exist anymore that fascinates me to no end
@chrosadomartinez If so be it, hail fascism. Because this is beautiful. But then again, why is everything on the left so ugly and degenerate, falling for its lowest whims with only the lowest common denominator as a unifying principle, and everything on the right being like a big painting with no use above being harmonious, people do good then, when they fight for beauty and virtue. And a child scholared in the will of his/her parents to excell above them... That is 'freedom'.
Wow that was some visually rich footage of people close up enough to get a good look at their faces and clothing.
Of course they were full of life in the stunning full colour light of day, not in a sort of melancholy nostalgic black and white. I get a little meloncholy myself though because I can't go back to then and it's obvious a heck of a lot has been lost and given up for our modern technology and human rights which of course are indeed fabulous. 7 billion people on Earth is way too much.
It takes your breath away. These people had so much pride. You can tell just from how they dressed and how they carried themselves. No hippies, no communists, no lazy dole dossers, no multi-culti, no celebrities. Just trade, empire and greatness. Civilisation had reached it's peak before World War One.
@MrJST87 Don't know your age of course, but your comment displays shallow thinking. "No hippies, no communists, no lazy dole dossers (?), no multi-culti, no celebrities. Just trade, empire and greatness." Hmmmmm. Very fascistic....could be an update of Mein Kampf. You completely miss the transcendental nature of the video and hypnotic, melancholy soundtrack, showing a society where conformity was paramount, the people essentially wearing the same uniform, carrying out their social scripts.
@MrJST87 (contd) ...and oblivious of the preciousness of their ever-vanishing moment on this earth. It is a very bittersweet video. But all you see and envy and rhapsodize over is a time when everyone was white, looked pretty much the same, no one questioned authority, and everyone obeyed as they were told.
And "no lazy dole dossers?" Do you mean no government aid for any reason? Imaginary full employment and perfect health, or lettem starve, lettem die, lettem freeze? Republican or worse'?
I suppose the point I'm making is that conformity today is made out to be an inherently bad thing, a sign of repression. But actually I think it was a unifying force that everyone looked and behaved similarly to each other. It made people feel like they were part of something. Like they had their own culture.
And bearing in mind I have a great-grandfather who was in the workhouse, I don't think all people on the dole are 'dossers'. But lots are. Back then people had a work ethic.
(cont) By the way I'm 24 since you ask. It's pretty arrogant to say you're more aware of the preciousness of your moment on Earth than they ever were. Nowadays people waste 8 hours a day in front of the television, whereas these people always found something constructive to do with their time. Just because they were reserved and had dignity, it doesn't mean that they lacked passion. They spent their evenings socialising, learning or creating. Now people watch the Simpsons instead.
It's interesting to think about enjoying the images of people and city streets ...watching them going about their lives................over 100 years ago.
Much as I love this era, they didn't seem to smile a lot - perhaps they thought it 'incorrect' to smile at a camera!
Fabulous footage though.
