BTW: in my opinion, in its actual stage, Unity sucks a lot: plenty of bugs at all levels. Gnome-Do was much better/faster/stable, but with a slow development though. Gnome3 will change things.
The new look is great, but didn't you felt something is missing?
The answer for that is- Compiz. They drop it because of compatibility issues. Why can't they spent more time with Compiz guys and solve it before releasing Gnome 3?
They have just made the worst decision they ever did. Many Linuxers will stick to Gnome 2 or even move to KDE.
And my last words are: Do you think it is a coincidence that Gnome and KDE are the best X11 desktop and they both use(or have used) Compiz?
@tal500 Compiz, Beryl, Xgl and such are really great, but recall that, at the end, they are nothing else but api layers that let the desktop managers integrate the 3D capabilities of one's graphic card, a functionality that all of them lack. But now, Gnome needs no more of such api layer since it already integrates it. Gnome 3 not working on Compiz does not mean that Gnome 3 will not be able to do what Compiz does, but that it will not need Compiz to do so, it will do it by its own.
Do NOT LIKE. DO NOT WANT. Gnome had BETTER just drop this nonsense until the frikkin open source drivers are sorted out better. And there better be a way to install gnome that looks and acts exactly like 2.0 or fedora 15 and ubuntu 11.04 are going to be the most narrowly adopted linux's in recent history. I can't stand KDE and I haven't use xfce enough to know If I can tolerate it. Whoever fired the guy running fedora a while back needs to open up a hate mail account.
IMPRESSIVE. I'm currently running KDE SC 4.5.5 on a Parabola GNU/Linux box (an Arch Linux %100 Libre) and Awesome 3 on my netbook but all this may change after the final release of GNOME 3.
However as I really like KDE apps (generally more feature complete) seems I will running a Frankenstein hibrid, lol :D
@Caratris No It would drop compiz entirelly in favor of native 3d window effects. However there is an possibility, that in future compiz++ would be ported to gnome3.
Does anyone know if the Gnome compositing window manager will have a zoom function comparable to the Enhanced Desktop Zoom in Compiz Fusion? It seems this is the only thing I really use from Compiz now except from the smoother animations. The ability to zoom and still manipulate the screen comes in handy in a lot of situations.
That was amazing. Music and the compositing look unreal, I'm downloading 10.10 right now, I think you have to upgrade to Gnome 3 to get this functionality. Love the music.
Looks flashy, but.... There go all your ordinary machines out the window. Aren't we kinda taking the MS route by requiring much processing power just for the eye candy? Hell, the good old Enlightenement was beautiful enough to me and I could run it on a K6. Incidentally, whatever happened to xripple? Has it just died, or is there another applet with a different name that does the same thing?
@parahumanoid Nope, you can run this easily on machine with intel gma 950 graphic and intel atom N330 processor (netbook). I haven't noticed it had some extreme hw needs, I believe if your computer is not more than 5+ years old, you will be fine (KDE-4.5 takes definitely more RAM and CPU power when effects are enabled). It's.... GNOME.
mac os x lion (10.7) is going to include a completely new way of interacting with the computer, gnome 3 will also include one, both seem very different, and both seem fantastic, finally some real choice on desktops, and not just the same just a little bit different.
anyway, i always use both and will continue to do so, i don't hate windows, not even nearly, but it crashed really often, and truth is, right now it doesn't look as good (IMHO) as gnome, kde or osx
hum, i dont think i like this, it is just flashy... not a real improvement, i like how it will make you use your os different, bit still... many people need efficiency
I like KDE 3.5 when i used it, i hate kde 4xx for some reason. Ive always been a GNOME fanboy though, and its my main ui since 2006. LXDE is really nice also once setup the way u like. But not really needed on my machine gnome is snappy.
i do hope they add option to re-size all icons on desktop with a simple select all, or hold scroll and move mouse, something similar in win7
resizing each icon in gnome is a pain, but its the only fault i have with it
Move the activities down to the lower right, just because it is a matter of convention, KDE, Windows, etc all have that type of thing down by the lower right.
the "beauty" of linux certainly isn't the default caveman fonts. I'm seeing a lot of pointlessness in this video. Some of that sh!t is only worthwhile for wow'ing your friends or fellow youtube users.
Well if this is Gnome3 i will stick with KDE, But as a linux user i will try it for a couple of months to get the real feel of gnome 3 but i doubt they can beat KDE
Anyway i love that we have so much to chose, Windows and Mac users live inside their litle boxes and they think thats the right way lol
For me i would have Windows Mac and Archlinux with (KDE LXDE E17 Gnome etc)
Stop living in the Box try everything and then make your choises
@kakita123 I don't care for this, either. After the monstrosity that KDE4 turned out to be (and I was originally a KDE guy), I just don't care to go through that again, thank you very much. Looks like I'll be switching to Xfce...
I can't believe I saw someone say that Microsoft is a monopoly. Jesus fucking Christ, welcome to 2010. I'm an Apple user myself, which is how I KNOW Microsoft is not a monopoly. I wish people would focus on facts instead of the useless fucking fannish politicking. Grow up.
On topic: Gnome 3 is pretty, but it's also pretty pointless.
Okay I'm really struggling to see the point of Gnome 3. The more I learn about this new Gnome Shells UI the more disappointed I become.
I can't see Gnome 3 delivering anything that Gnome 2.x doesn't already deliver in combination with Compiz. The desktop expose feature? It's already there in Compiz. You can choose to look at all the virtual desktops and scale the application windows down to see them all.
Initially Gnome Shells sounded like a cool idea. But the implementation so far sucks.
@aikiwolfie You really should try it out! At first i didn't really like it either, and I am really more a ubuntu unity fan, but hey now im running opensuse with gnome shell and i really love it :D Its actually really good integrated :) but I might switch to unity when it realeses
looks very nice imo, it'll create like a image for ubuntu. This is ubuntu itself, not like windows or mac. Though the GUI do looks quite confusing, every time you wanna open a app, your desktop is like minimized to 70%, cool but weird idea
I rarely use virtual desktops because I have to 'memorize' the locations of windows -- the only help is the small icons of the desktop guide. That full screen preview will be a great help. Note it is not just zooming out but tiling windows, like Exposé of Mac OS X.
That left bar needs to work but basically it's good for a launcher to be able to use the full screen (have you tried the 'backstage' of Office 2010 btw?).
a tip for you, if you don't want to memorize where apps are in multiple desktops use DockbarX. - i can just click the app and it will switch to whatever desktop it's on.
also, compiz doesn't just "zoom out". it is tiling windows just like Expose in osx. it just doesn't have the one handy feature of Expose which allows you to switch placement of desktops. that is handy when using multiple monitors/screens
This looks very promising to me. I have only seen KDE, and it looks way too much to Windows with the bar on the bottom. I want something that looks different...
All those bad comments here about Gnome make me a little sad. Its like fighting about which is the best car; everybody will have his own best car. Gnome is my best DE. If you don't agree, you're not going to convince me, don't even bother trying... Its all about taste, and I love these new ideas, and I love the looks of this.
that is the dumbest thing i have heard in a while...
1.Mac is basically derived from Unix(that's good!)
2. linux originally started as a clone of unix.
3.Windows is built on DOS...(yuck!)
a Mac's design handling & performance makes up for less customization. OSX kick's the crap out of any version of windows - to be a realist - its solid state-reliable out of the box, probably the only *nix OS that is! and apple
Linux and M$ here. Mac is evil. Yo ucan't customize it and if you do anything that Steve Jobs doesn't want you to he'll wreak your shit with an update. Plus Mac is BSD and Linux is Minix.
1st. linux is NOT minix. linus was inspired by tannebuam & minix. minix is a micro-kernel - linux is not, it is monolithic and cloned pretty much all of unix, you are straight up WRONG on that point.
2nd. parts of Mac are BSD(mostly userspace), other parts are very different and closely resemble Openstep. ie: MacOS binary format and extensive parts of the kernel, which is (almost) microkernel, but I/O & drivers aren't completely seperate, so it isn't a true microkernel.
1st. OSX uses alot less RAM and CPU to run than Win7.
2nd. i can run MS parallel inside of OSX, very cleanly, no problem. i can also run MS apps natively, as well as most linux/unix applications. try running Mac apps in windows?
you can run SOME linux apps, but not to the same degree.
3rd. vista is crap win7 is JUST OKAY - but has a ton of software/hardware incompatibilities, this includes it's own MS binaries. the kernel is of bad design.
its seems you don't know all feature of KDE... the bottom bar, you cant make it like a window$ ( bottom only) mac0$ (top only) or Gnome (top and bot), its just custonmizable at your wish, and now with last rlz .. its more and more true, there you free . . .
True, I didn't try KDE... But mainly because if you install KDE on Ubuntu, there will be a lot of programs installed with KDE which I don't need. I use the Gnome programs, and if the KDE programs are installed at the same time it would just be space consuming.
And I just like Gnome, I see no reason to go to KDE, although it looks very nice. But KDE seems a bit... messy... But, like I said, its all about personal flavour. :D
I do hope you guys hate Windows as much as I do. My Windows is infected.
im a gnome user, but gnome shell i feel like is a step in the wrong direction. for one mutter seems to not be hardware accelerated - unlike compiz. i find it choppy and not very smooth. i think gnome would have been better off adding functionality to their panel - updating/upgrading it.
and everytime you want to go into the menu you have to use this expo clone, it slows how quick i can get around my desktop - navigation is much better in gnome 2.28 than
Gnome need shell. I liked it, because it is simple fast. No compiz needed. Move your mouse in up left and select what you want. Sidebar with win button is something resembles win 7 bar. When you try kde 4 you see how it is easy too see windows at once with only single mouse move (still better than compiz variant). However Gnome shell has advantages against any other desktop system currently in use. See how shell is minimalistic, and unlike kde4 (qt4) no gtk rewrite.
A lot of you guys are dummies. The shell is an optional usage mode. You are not required to use it, and it will not change the user experience at all if you do not use it. If you like Gnome now, then you will continue liking it even if you do not use this feature, which to me looks fairly decent.
Whether it be GNOME, KDE, XFCE, or LXDE that i prefer, i would not be on Linux if it were the only one. We should appreciate we actually have a choice, thanks to the great work of the GNU/Linux community.
@jonasc70 Gnome 3 has been in development since 2006. Unity is new with 11.04. Hence the term Unity. Such as Unity desktop and Gnome desktop merging. They are trying to give you a taste of what Gnome 3 will be like, just stripped down. Unity sucks bad. Im guessing they are trying to make it so Compiz wont have to be used but someone out there will make something for Gnome 3. They are trying to give you some flare and usability at the same time.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I've always hated Gnome. KDE4 sucks.
I've gone back to using Fluxbox, and checking out other projects like E. If I could figure out how to better integrate the wicd manager in Fluxbox, desktop environments will be completely useless to me.
Fortunately, the beauty of Linux is choice. KDE and Gnome both have very strong points and are extremely solid. The more I use KDE, the more practical it seems to use both in business and personal environments.
But at the end of the day, you gotta use what works. Hey! At least we're not stuck with a measley little green start button in the lower left! :P
KDE4 was a complete revamp of code over KDE 3.5, just like Gnome 3 will be to Gnome 2.x. The same thing will happen. It's just the nature of the beast.
Fortunately KDE 4.2 fixed a ton of bugs, and KDE 4.3 is better yet. I have two work laptops here, both identical hardware, with Ubuntu 9.04 and Kubuntu 9.04 on them. In direct comparison, KDE is a hair faster. I put Kubuntu Karmic on the Kubuntu laptop, which has KDE 4.3, and it's faster yet.
As a long time Gnome user, I am extremely doubtful of Gnome Shell (3.0) becoming as popular (in a positive way) as the current release of Gnome is. You have to activate the overlay to do everything (and I mean everything). Want to open your home directory? Overlay. Firefox? Overlay. Calculator? Overlay.
This caused me to try KDE, and I'm hooked now. They have the right idea. Overlay and menu items are separate. Genius!
@champagnehyu pretty much in your boat, execpt for the KDE part. i am a long time gnome user, but i really don't like the gnome-shell. it's SUX! i think they need to make mutter an option, as well as how they are designing they-re menus.
they have made things very confusing distracting and disorganized. i will probably switch to Xfce or some
other window managers.
**one point though, when i used gnome 3.0 i was still able to open Apps by clicking on my dock. i didn't always
it's an option. but gnome-shell is going to be gnome3 from everything i've read... hopefully the current gnome will prove more viable and compiz can be re-written to be more posix compliciant and less hackish. cause i don't like mutter or kwin.
@Jarige2 No, classical physics *was* broken, since it didn't explain how light acts as both a wave and a particle. It's a pointless comparison anyway.
really really. I just wish that they could make the Gnome3 more beautiful and now they develop this ridiculous stuff, which makes the desktop become a mess
It doesn't appear that much forethought was put into this design. It doesn't look ergonomic nor usable at all. Too much flash and not enough substance.
Its too busy. Long lists of icons with too much in the text description is not friendly on the eyes, its a usability failure. And the whole thing doesn't seem terribly practical.
Compiz isn't compatible with GNOME 3? Good riddance. Compiz does absolutely nothing to increase the productivity of your desktop environment and only serves to leech off your resources. If you want useless eye candy move back to Vista.
compiz is a really effective way to set keybindings and screen-edge commands. not to mention expo and some of the other window switchers. turn off all the stuff you don't like, but there's still some helpful stuff.
When you drop an element into a workspace it should automatically move to that workspace, rather than continuing to stay in that retarded expose-like interface. At least, that should be DEFAULT behavior. It LOOKS cool, but the behavior looks stupid annoying.

Hell, the good old Enlightenement was beautiful enough to me and I could run it on a K6. Incidentally, whatever happened to xripple? @parahumanoid Nope, you can run this easily on machine with intel gma 950 graphic and intel atom N330 processor (netbook). mac os x lion (10.7) is going to include a completely new way of interacting with the computer, gnome 3 will also include one, both seem very different, and both seem fantastic, finally some real choice on desktops, and not just the same just a little bit different.

That virtual desktop looks great.
I rarely use virtual desktops because I have to 'memorize' the locations of windows -- the only help is the small icons of the desktop guide. That full screen preview will be a great help. Note it is not just zooming out but tiling windows, like Exposé of Mac OS X.
That left bar needs to work but basically it's good for a launcher to be able to use the full screen (have you tried the 'backstage' of Office 2010 btw?).
oyoso3 1 year ago
a tip for you, if you don't want to memorize where apps are in multiple desktops use DockbarX.

Jarige2 2 years ago
@Jarige2 having it on the top just makes it look mac and mac is more evil in my opinion, at least you can upgrade and customize a Win PC.
FluffyLizards 2 years ago
Mac is evil?!?!
that is the dumbest thing i have heard in a while...
1.Mac is basically derived from Unix(that's good!)
2. linux originally started as a clone of unix.
3.Windows is built on DOS...(yuck!)
a Mac's design handling & performance makes up for less customization. OSX kick's the crap out of any version of windows - to be a realist - its solid state-reliable out of the box, probably the only *nix OS that is! and apple
makes really good software...
MacOS and linux only, MS sux!
triplesquarednine 1 year ago
Linux and M$ here. Mac is evil. Yo ucan't customize it and if you do anything that Steve Jobs doesn't want you to he'll wreak your shit with an update. Plus Mac is BSD and Linux is Minix.
FluffyLizards 1 year ago
1st. linux is NOT minix. linus was inspired by tannebuam & minix. minix is a micro-kernel - linux is not, it is monolithic and cloned pretty much all of unix, you are straight up WRONG on that point.
2nd. parts of Mac are BSD(mostly userspace), other parts are very different and closely resemble Openstep. ie: MacOS binary format and extensive parts of the kernel, which is (almost) microkernel, but I/O & drivers aren't completely seperate, so it isn't a true microkernel.
you don't have a clue
triplesquarednine 1 year ago
3rd. i have been using Mac for 12yrs, NEVER has an update
wreaked my system - you obviously haven't owned many Macs. that is usually the Hackintosh crowd that complains about updates breaking their system.
you can customize Mac, it is just hidden away and not easy to get at, and the WM is what it is - it is very integrated with things like quartz...
that doesn't make apple evil, an OS is a tool, and as a tool MacOSX is great.
for these reasons (look below)
triplesquarednine 1 year ago
4th. viruses - need i say more.
5th. MS = monopoly
triplesquarednine 1 year ago
lastly,
how many real pro applications does MS make???
(that aren't plagued with bugs and security flaws, ie: MSoffice, or Windows itself)
apple makes tons!
64bit is of the best design in a Mac, especially for DEV's...
UPDATES:
sp3 update broke a ton of systems/software.
i know this because I PROVIDE TECH SUPPORT FOR WINDOWS AS A BIG PART OF MY INCOME..
updates in windows can be as bad as viruses, and hacking windows - takes all of about 5minutes or less, in most cases..
it's a joke!
triplesquarednine 1 year ago
its seems you don't know all feature of KDE... the bottom bar, you cant make it like a window$ ( bottom only) mac0$ (top only) or Gnome (top and bot), its just custonmizable at your wish, and now with last rlz .. its more and more true, there you free . . .
didgerudee 1 year ago
True, I didn't try KDE... But mainly because if you install KDE on Ubuntu, there will be a lot of programs installed with KDE which I don't need. I use the Gnome programs, and if the KDE programs are installed at the same time it would just be space consuming.
And I just like Gnome, I see no reason to go to KDE, although it looks very nice. But KDE seems a bit... messy... But, like I said, its all about personal flavour. :D
I do hope you guys hate Windows as much as I do. My Windows is infected.
Jarige2 1 year ago
im a gnome user, but gnome shell i feel like is a step in the wrong direction. for one mutter seems to not be hardware accelerated - unlike compiz. i find it choppy and not very smooth. i think gnome would have been better off adding functionality to their panel - updating/upgrading it.
and everytime you want to go into the menu you have to use this expo clone, it slows how quick i can get around my desktop - navigation is much better in gnome 2.28 than
gnome-shell.
triplesquarednine 1 year ago
Gnome need shell. I liked it, because it is simple fast. No compiz needed. Move your mouse in up left and select what you want. Sidebar with win button is something resembles win 7 bar. When you try kde 4 you see how it is easy too see windows at once with only single mouse move (still better than compiz variant). However Gnome shell has advantages against any other desktop system currently in use. See how shell is minimalistic, and unlike kde4 (qt4) no gtk rewrite.
chronius9 2 years ago
I guess you'll get used to it eventually and end up feeling limited in Gnome <2.30 (aka 3.0).
But for now, I'll stick to the traditional interface as I switched from KDE3 about a year ago in fear of KDE4.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a fresh UI, but not when they limit my ability to use it (like KDE4 did when I switched).

I'll preface this by saying I'm not a Gnome fan.
A lot of you guys are dummies. The shell is an optional usage mode. You are not required to use it, and it will not change the user experience at all if you do not use it. If you like Gnome now, then you will continue liking it even if you do not use this feature, which to me looks fairly decent.

jonasc70 9 months ago
@jonasc70 Gnome 3 has been in development since 2006. Unity is new with 11.04. Hence the term Unity. Such as Unity desktop and Gnome desktop merging. They are trying to give you a taste of what Gnome 3 will be like, just stripped down. Unity sucks bad. Im guessing they are trying to make it so Compiz wont have to be used but someone out there will make something for Gnome 3. They are trying to give you some flare and usability at the same time.

Love it or hate it, KDE deserves their place. :)
champagnehyu 2 years ago 2
As a long time Gnome user, I am extremely doubtful of Gnome Shell (3.0) becoming as popular (in a positive way) as the current release of Gnome is. You have to activate the overlay to do everything (and I mean everything). Want to open your home directory? Overlay. Firefox? Overlay. Calculator? Overlay.
This caused me to try KDE, and I'm hooked now. They have the right idea. Overlay and menu items are separate. Genius!
Come on, Gnome developers...
champagnehyu 2 years ago
@champagnehyu pretty much in your boat, execpt for the KDE part. i am a long time gnome user, but i really don't like the gnome-shell. it's SUX! i think they need to make mutter an option, as well as how they are designing they-re menus.
they have made things very confusing distracting and disorganized. i will probably switch to Xfce or some
other window managers.
**one point though, when i used gnome 3.0 i was still able to open Apps by clicking on my dock. i didn't always
use an overlay...?
