oh, im sorry, i raised my voice a little. teehee. im sorry :-)-- !! years on this album still kicks my ass every time i play it. oh and does anyone agree that this album must be played in its entirety or you arent getting its full effect. damn, what's that song with the guitar so vicious its sounds like air raid sirens and machine guns?! dont tell me it'll come to me, oh damn nah it didnt. damn you legalized mj!!!
im a drummer [for fun's sake] and have an evolved taste in rock music for instance steve vai, eric johnson , satriani, morse so now that ive established at the very least that im not some halfwit who's led an uneducated hapless life, THIS ALBUM IS SEVERELY UNDERRATED.
Space Invader by the Pretenders + Cheech & Chong = Awesome!!! fell in love with this song after watching cheech and chong's next movie, and hearing this during the end credits... Hilarious movie, Awesome song!
I remeber hearing this album on the radio in its entirety one evening and thinking, this is excellent, this is a new sound, I like this a lot, who are these people? A couple of months later it was playing on my stereo every Saturday morning -
I saw this original line-up in concert at U.C.L.A. (Paulley Pavillion) 1981 right B4 they released their 2nd recording...Bow Wow Wow, Code Blue & some other band I don't recall opened up for them. GREAT SHOW!!!! I remeber M. Chambers being an amazing drummer & they were better live, than on record. One of my faves off this record...Thanx for the post!
@igluver15 This and the wait.up the neck---- holy shit the whole fuckin album blew me away!!! first chick besides Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson of Heart to be able to really play and kick ass!
Released Jan. 19, 1980. I got it for my 20th birthday, Feb. 13, 1980 ... and played the HELL out of this elpee. I'd put my stereo speakers in the window of our dorm window and crank "Precious / The Phone Call / UpThe Neck / Tattooed Love Boys / Up The Neck" across the Ohio University East Green ... had so many people ask me, "Who IS this???" I got written up SO MANY TIMES, heh-heh! James Honeyman Scott was the best "new" guitarist of the 80s. Too bad he didn't make it past two albums.
@jflinn210 you got written up? why? where did you do this? when you say you got written up, it makes me think you did this at a school or something lol
@kramyelir besides all the pretenders recordings shes on the tributes to bruce springstein burt bacharach judy collins sun records and so many movie soundtracks i lost count
This was one of the five most important albums of the New Wave. It set the tone and mood of what would become the power, discontent, hedonism and fashion of the early '80s.
@songsfinallyuploaded Actually this came out in 1979. The second album "Pretenders II" came out in 1980. I only know that because I have a copy of "Pretenders II" on cassette that I've had since I was like 7 or 8. Found it at a yard sale and snatched it up since I am a HUGE Pretenders fan, thanks to my mom. lol
I think this was 1983 or 1984, remember hearing this for the first time from a co-worker, I could get enough of it, then I kept looking for it, could not find it at any CD store, then found it here, added it to my Favs, again, thanks
This rocks.

If there's such a thing as "crushingly melodic," it begins at 3:44 and goes until...well, until you hear the video game noise. Awesome.
