Hey guys - just to let you know that the web series is progressing through development with a proposed shoot early next year. Meanwhile we're also putting a limited series online comic together, which should be fun. :)
Hey, really like this but a bit of history: all British soldiers fighting in wars prior to world war one had to have mustaches by law ^^ Kinda odd but true :P
@BrightOnimicon they all had large sideburns too, but tbh when you have steam powered robots walking around, i don't think historicall accuracy really matters anymore :)
What I really dislike about stereotypical steampunk is there's a lot of gadgets which don't have any partical purpose except steampunk look. And this video is full of them. Googles are extremally boring and over-used.
@Max0Inq We're pretty sure the binoculars were used to scout the battlefield, the gatling gun was used to damage the mech, and the mech was used to attack pretty much everybody. The props were all there for a practical reason.
You must not forget the big engeener: the family who pushed the world to what it is to day, instead of what Steampunk dreams could have made : Rothschild Banksters family . At the time inventors were creating a wooden and copper world with the best will ever, this family was planing wars : All of them until 1914 were their deed . BoersWar =Milner pushing Kitchener to use concentration camps, Sassoon pushing GB to Opium war and the whole R. family pushing to the great slaughter of 1914.
Why are they using uniforms from the 1870's and cartridge firearms during the Crimean war? Shouldn't they be wearing shakos and using muzzle loading muskets? I mean, apart of the steam-punk technology itself of course.
@EBTL0947 I did enjoy it, it's nice to see people doing steampunk stuff out there, but I could have enjoyed it more if ALL the steampunk films (with a specific time setting) I have watched weren't, for some reason, set ALL in the 1860's decade (why the fuck do they insist, I mean does it have to be set in the 1860's to be steampunk, when everything apart from the steampunk stuff itself is from three decades later!?). Although now that I think about it, you're right, I'm just being irrational.
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN! Oh wait...... I a Canadian. Well I guess I am a in a commonwealth country. But I believe in communism! I don't even know were I stand now.....
that's right. a steady(/-ier) cam could have done better. or at least a little more controlled. seems like it was done in PP at the cost of some atmosphere as well...
@tedeadite It's steampunk, a world where we have steam powered robots and gatling guns. If Her Majesty wishes to equip her troops with the redcoat then she bloody well will.
omg please make this series. Steampunk dosen't get the mediea time it deserves. I'm a fan of it and mixed generes but die hards are insulted if you mix steampunk with say energy aligators from space but I myself love it all.
this would make an interesting web series. A couple o' british soldiers from the crimean war who are given the job of testing new weapons in the british armory as well as combatting and confiscating enemy super weapons. And why? because nobody else was insane enough to accept the position.
@coolclaytony We are in the planning stages of putting together a web series to lead on from this short. I am planning to spend most of June in my shed building new props.
It was based off a cordless drill to provide the rotation. With Brass parts built up from there. The core to the rotating barrels is a piece of steel rod, Which fits into the drill as a normal drill bit would. The weight of the rotating barrels caused this to bend with reperated use (Heat buildup I expect). This can be fixed, but unfortunatly not on the set. I suspect a wider diameter rod will fix this problem in the future.
Neat concept, and really decent execution for a no-budget short film especially. The steam-powered gatling gun was interesting, although the barrels flopping around at the end was a bit distracting. What did you use for it (as I'm guessing that was not on the NFA registry prior to 1986, so it was not based off a functional registered full auto) as the base weapon?
I have two, problems with it, I personally would have desaturated the color and if at all possible used a 35mm adaptor, but it was still pretty fricking sweet. those were just minor things that would have in my opinion made it even better! Good work
@loubra20 We'd have loved to use a 35mm adaptor but didn't have the budget or equipment at the time (we shot this back in 2009). For future projects we'll be able to get a much more cinematic look. Thanks for commenting!
Comments for the next one, dirty uniforms (war is hell), process it in sepia tones, and, ahem, fix the wobbly barrel (but the steam Gatling is neat!).
Wow... This is amazing work! The special effects were great, and the the mini-gun that the two guys pulled out was really well made! How did you make that mini-gun?
Lose the doc martins, get something period. Try for a civil war infantry sabre instead of something early Renaissance. Get a few Martini Henrys too and some pre-1900s googles. I love the RAFs too, but I wouldn't put 'em in this.
Good job with the CG. Other than that, I have no beef. This was fun guys!
one problem... the gat overheats, to the point where the soldier can light both the dynamite and his cigarette off the glowing barrel, yet in one scene he is holding it at the point where the glowing barrel meets the gun and it fails to ignite the burlap of the sand bags... ;)
It's good! Just enough to make you want more. Who is fighting whom? Why? When can I see more? I'd love to see more of this happen, and see you guys up your FX. Very good stuff, and very entertaining! ^_^
A near perfect blend of snarky and serious. I enjoyed it very much. Despite there being very little in the way of character development or setting (such as who's fighting who and why), I wouldn't mind seeing a whole bunch more of these short films to find out more about both the characters and the world they live in. Good job :)
this might seem like a weird comment to make but the guy's hat is too distracting.
First he gets shot and it falls off, he goes to the trouble of picking it up but carries it instead of putting it back on. Then after the closeup, he has it back on again. Then he chucks it on the ground as he climbs through barbed wire and then bam, magically on his head again :p
