You should tune to his most definitive song "Walk Away". That is the song that best defined Matt Munro and his wonderful voice. His is the golden voice of his era. RIP M. Munro.
This song was performed last night for All-Region Choir by the boys in the mixed choir, and I was a soprano standing in those risers, about to cry, because I know what this song means. <3
Don't forget the beautiful and touching sound of Howard Keel singing this from early 50'5 movie. Keel's voice, like Munro's & Sinatra's was rich and expressive!

Don't think it makes a difference what the real story is behind the lyrics. Whatever it's relevance is to the individual. For me, it was holding my wife's hand as she slipped away from this life. Slowly and softly she left. Been over 7 years and miss here everyday. Till we meet again. Thanks putting this on youtube.
@MegaKristy23 Thanks for the kind words. We all go through loss. A friend told me after he lost his only daughter (the worst thing that can happen to a parent) that once you know the pain will always be there you can deal with it, cope with it. Thanks again. And I bought Matt's CD with 50 of his songs and everyone is awesome.

Totally agree. Very similar with my dear departed old papa, he loved all the old crooners esp. Matt Monro and Andy Williams. My brother is named Matthew and I am Andrew.
The true story behind this song is: There was a man who was dying, and his grieving wife had been by his hospital bedside for three days and nights. Sometime during the third night, between midnight and day, she lay down beside him and dozed off to sleep. At the same time she was dozing off to sleep, he realized he was about to die. The man didn't want his wife to see him pass away, so he took a notepad from the side of the bed and wrote these heartwrenching words!
@njmhk that's very sweet - but it's not true unfortunately. the song was originally written in Italian by 2 writers, and it's simply a love song...I like your story though - it's lovely :)
@njmhk no, I wasn't there when Calabrese wrote the lyrics, but I know a lot about him and I've never heard this story before. However, you seem to be quite convinced you're right - so perhaps you can enlighten us all by citing your authority? Where does your "true" story come from? who was the man? who was his wife? when did he die? Where did he die? etc. Have you heard "Something in the Air tonight" - ;)
@mlusby I think that all songs are writen by an experience that happened to the writer and they expamded on that I have written a few songs please check two words and boyfriend with issues
@arrghgarry not necessarily - I have written hundreds of songs - many of them about experiences but definitely not all - the songwriters of this piece do it/did it for a living - Calabrese was given teh music and asked to write lyrics - but I don't think he necessarily based upon any real life experience - however, I'm still waiting for the other guy to tell us what his authority is? I might be wrong!!!
@borecleaner1 This is the story of this song as told by Elvis! Do a You Tube search on Elvis and this song...it's hard to imagine he would have just made this up!! AND IF IT IS A MADE UP STORY, ITS A DAMN GOOD ONE :)
I stumbled onto this version of one of my favorite songs, and have to admit I had never heard of Matt Monro until just now. I thought I was up on all the great male vocalists of the 1960's (Sinatra, Bennet, Davis, Darrin, Cole, Martin), and now I can add this man to that list of distinguished vocalists. Monro's vocal skills are simply astounding. Wished I had heard of this man sooner. I look forward to hearing his catalog of recordings. I'm so excited I just discoverd someone "new."

This was played at my nan's funeral on the 28th december 2010. It just makes me cry, listening to it because it reminds me so much of her. nan, you were a truly amazing person and this song describes you to a tee. reminds me of my mum and dad god bless you both 11 years dad has been gone and 10 years mum who says it gets better has time goes by still miss them every day love you forever x
If it is any consolation to you, my mum died in 1987 when I was 17. This was played at her funeral. It is a song that is dear to my heart. We always remember out loved ones. Best wishes, Keith
Matt M, Iz and Teresa Teng the most beautiful voices to ever sing a song. Check out Iz and Teresa on YouTube. Iz (English and Hawaiian) and Teresa (English, Japanese, Chinese), you may not understand the words but you will be hooked if you listen to a few of their songs...sooo beautiful.
what a fantastic voice, i would love to have met the great man.he was so underated, thankyou to chris evans on radio 2 for playing his music, love to your family matt, they must be so proud of you, good bless great man
Matt sings this song better than all the others. He's the best in ballads, and when he sings "Softly" it always brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for leaving this with us Matt.
NOT MUCH YOU CAN ADD TO ALL THE OTHER POSITIVE COMMENTS EXCEPT WHAT A BEAUTIFUL VOICE, AND GUESS WHAT I HEARD EVERYWORD HE SPOKE...UNLIKE TODAYS MANUFACTURED BANDS
This is the definitive version of this song. When you realize what the story behind it is, it just rips your heart out. I remember the "cute" version by the Sandpipers so many years ago, but Matt's version is the one that seems to bring out the real emotional meaning of it: a dying man's last words to his wife as she sleeps by his side. Thank you for posting this.
One Fourth of July twilight, I parked my car in a large Chandler, Arizona field and as my family ran up to the main staging area of a public display, I stayed behind in the car due to a bad ankle. As the night grew darker, I hit the radio dial and from a Fresno oldies station, this masterpiece of a song came floating over the airwaves, it was soft and faint which gave it a haunting, surreal beauty. Shortly before the end, the fireworks began, I will never forget that incredible moment.
@snursmumrik its about a dying man whos wife is at his bedside.shes been there for three nights without sleeping, she eventually falls to sleep when the man feels himself slipping away. he takes a pen and paper and writes her a message rather than wake her. the words in the message are that of the song. a true story.
@subman123x i heard this story from my dad. i feel really sad. the writer is so much like my dad. he didn't want to see us cry or feel sad. i miss him so much. his voice was wonderful too. it's been 19 years since he was called home where there is no tears nor sadness just singing, just all about happiness. miss you dad.
Loved it...

Matt sings this song better than all the others. He's the best in ballads, and when he sings "Softly" it always brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for leaving this with us Matt.

As much as I liked Sinatra, there just is no comparison, Matts voice was way more superior - sorry to any of Franks supportes and no offence meant

Matt Monro was often compared to Frank Sinatra but in my opinion Matt was far better, Frank new this, & told Matt in a note just before he died.

@gilnod Matt was a better singer by far. Sinatra didn't have his power. Both had great phrasing. I would never mistake one's voice for another.

Absolutely beautiful ! This was a huge hit for Matt Monro and rightly so. Many sang it but none like this. Thanks for the post wellingtonpub !

Shortly before the end, the fireworks began, I will never forget that incredible moment.

a song about one night stand?
snursmumrik 1 year ago
@snursmumrik its about a dying man whos wife is at his bedside.shes been there for three nights without sleeping, she eventually falls to sleep when the man feels himself slipping away. he takes a pen and paper and writes her a message rather than wake her. the words in the message are that of the song. a true story.

@subman123x i heard this story from my dad. i feel really sad. the writer is so much like my dad. he didn't want to see us cry or feel sad. i miss him so much. his voice was wonderful too. it's been 19 years since he was called home where there is no tears nor sadness just singing, just all about happiness. miss you dad.
thank you for sharing the story to others.
