May I ask you good people a question? Is it the song or just the DM Band that makes this kind of impact on this very young audience..Do they really like sweet carline that much? Probably a combination of both? More important are great older classic songs like this really connecting to young audiences? Thanks!
Both. This song is played a lot at bars, at least here in the Chicago area. But also, he played this sing as jill9700 mentioned because the song is special to Fenway Park...along the same lines of Jimmy Buffet doing the 7th Inning Stretch at Wrigley Field when he played there several years ago.
It's a combo of things. It's our favorite band, DMB. It's a classic song. It's one of the best bar/drinking songs. It's DMB playing it as the 8th song of this show, awesome since it's tradition at Red Sox games to play this song around the 8th inning.
I looked up why they play Sweet Caroline inthe 8th inning, it turns out some woman was in charge of the music back in the day, and starting playing it randomly, and she noticed it got everyone worked up. So, that's why DMB played it as the 8th song at Fenway. I swear to god I can hear myself screaming on this video!
"I was at this show - I have never heard a crwod sing along so loudly to anything and I've been to 67 DMB shows!"
i dont know if you were or not, but shoulda been at the 2 C'ville shows. man it was unbelievable. every single song, the crowd was non stop. best 2 nights ever
you are clearly not from boston... or this planet for that matter. Dave is clearly one of the best musicians of all time. Or do you not know enough about music to understand what playing with Warren Haynes, Bela Fleck, Robert Randoplh, Soulive, Trey Anastasio, Tim Reynolds means? I think someone was too for school at some point and never got the memo that just because they are popular doesnt mean they suck.
sillygirl41 you are the dumbest person ever, if you dont know why they covered SC at fenway park u didnt deserve to even set foot in that place, go see a britney spears concert idiot
I must say that as someone working this particular show ( I was an assistant to the DMB production crew) it was the only song that EVERY crew member ran out for. I wish I had had my camera because as a Fenway Park regular it meant a lot to me to see THAT many people having a total ball and singing along. I smiled so hard I almost cried. I had the best view of all of YOU enjoying this cover and participating! They did it once and they will never do it again. You all witnessed history.
what a hoot! Could there be more, pure fun energy? You're right -- and you were there and I wasn't. Never again? maybe when they play Fenway again, as the 7th song, for the 7th stretch.
yeah sure-Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow are the same. That is why hundreds of rock bands have covered Neil Diamond-including bands much harder then Dave Matthews (Korn,HIM,Deep Purple). What did you think of Phish covering Neil's "Cracklin Rosie" then?
I was there, in tiny cramped field box seats, have been to well over 50 shows, and I thought that out of all the covers that DMB does, this was by far the worst. All that song reminds me of is stupid drunk bumbos and frat boys at Boston bars. Hopefully this was a one time thing and we'll never be subjected to it again. Just my opinion though!!
I sincerely hope you have many more moments in life that surpass hearing a NEIL DIAMOND cover song at a concert. What's next? A Barry Manilow cover?
sillygirl - You've clearly missed the whole point of them playing the song and have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to cover songs in general..
This was one of the best Dave shows of all, singing this song, and being in Fenway just made it that much better...

Sweet Caroline is played at a lot of college bars as well as sporting events.
When this song is played, you are required to go "Sweet Caroline...BAH BAH BAH..." and "so good! so good! so good!". Its a rule..

I'm so mad I missed this show. My ex-boyfriend had tickets, if only I stayed with him a little longer I could have saw them. I love DMB. Ah well.

Well, you might not have been happy...but about 50,000 Bostonians were quite satisfied.
