IS there anybody who could explain to me why the B17 was massively used on the european front and not so much in asia, whereas the B29 (later) was in Asia, but not so much in Europe? i think the B29 was only dployed here at the very end of the war. in advance thanks
@arnaud051969 The B-17 didn't have the range to do well in the vast Pacific. The B-29 wasn't all that effective there either until the Marianas Islands were captured in 1944 providing a base closer to Japan that was also easier to supply than bases in China. Even then it was almost 1500 miles to Tokyo- too far for a 17which needed less than half that distance to reach Berlin from southern England.
What, no Glen Miller music? It's nice to see one in olive & grey for a change. What's that black spot just in front of the tail fin, is it some sort of hatch?
If you are referring to the black stripe that is running up the vertical stabilizer, that is a de-icing boot. Temperatures at altitude can reach far below zero. As such, icing is a very real problem. The boots were filled with air at altitude then emptied. The expansion and contraction of the boot caused the ice forming on leading edges to break off. You will notice that there are similar boots on the outer edges of the wings as well.
Never mind. I see what you were talking about. That was another gun turret if I remember correctly. That spot should be right near either the radio operator or navigator's station.
@hzzlrp10 that in which you are talking about was a station for a 50 cal for the radio operator the navigators job was firing the left cheek gun and the bombadier was in charge of the right the pilot was in charge of the lower nose turrent
a B-17 is a sight to to see,i was at a air show this past summer at akron canton airport and got to go in this b-17 and the b-24 took about 200 pics. very nice and saw about 50 or so WWII vets. that had served on that plane.
@34532525 they do because it might distract enemy fighters and motovate pilots (acording to the Military Channle) for ex the pilot of the memphis belle named his plane that becauce his girlfriend named belle was from memphis (Thats why bell is spelled wrong on the plane) they did this on all planes p-51 p-47 b-17 b-29 p-80 ect
@vinyaw Your story is only part right. The word "Belle" ,as in a southern belle, means a good looking woman of high class standards. Her name wasn't Bell. Read the book, The Memphis Belle.
The most beautiful bird to ever take flight. With the Avenger right behind it. Then the P47! I have seen this B-17 when it was in Bremerton. It is awsome, It's a Douglas built model.
Yes it was. The USAAC or USAAF wanted to put together a contract for the first 4 engine long range bomber. Boeing won the contract and the first XB-17 (Boeing 299) flew on July 28, 1935. What a beauty, as she was the most survival WWII 4 engine bomber prior to our Boeing B-29 Superfortress!! If you don't believe me, look it up!!!
yea you could shoot the shit out of a B-17 and itll still fly. those things used to come back with pieces of the stabilizers missing and holes all over the wings. whatever boeing did when they built the B-17 was genius!

why they give women names in b17? please answer...
34532525 2 years ago
They are given women's names because you ride inside the fuselage. If you rode on the outside, they would have men's names.
mdhbigdog 2 years ago
i always thought of two reasons
its like a car, you don't name your car a guy name.
or because they're horny soldiers all missing there women back home.
haha, good answer mdhbigdog never thought of that
