Very cool. I like how you incorporated some of Monk's offbeat licks into the improv. Monk would dig it !
I haven't tried external mics with my H4n yet. Just curious - did you only use one Apex 205 ? If so, how is the result any different from just using the internal mics ? I was under the impression that using external mics was just for 4 track recording and that you'd have to use two of them.
I also want to buy the Zoom H4n. Have you got a recording of the piano sound without the additional mics? Is the sound still acceptable if you only use the Zoom H4n?

This is my 1st visit to" 7notemode world" cause of lot2learn ,but it wont be my last. I also really love that all to brief Chick version. Love the stride . If you can see your way clear I would invite you to check out one of my vids. maybe "drastic measures" anyway imabebacksoon PS I might be late to the party but maybe this is the beginning of a real jazz community . One can only hope.
I love it. Now he sings, now he sobs. Well, Chick did it again on the Expressions album, and he played it further outside than your performance, but not better in my humble My old boss was a trumpeter, and played with Monk once at the Royal Roost. He told me Monk had a half gallon of whiskey on the piano, and he'd take a slug, play something horrible, then take another big slug. All night long!
Wow this is fantastic. thanks for sharing! I love Thelonious Monk, and I love your playing, so very enjoyable to hear this!! 5* :) And agreed with others re the sound quality, fantastic recording.
Thanks for the comments everyone. This is a pretty obscure tune. I like the chord changes, which are unusual, and of course, Monks unique rhythmic signature, which is always fun to play around with.
Very nice..

Your stride is beautiful, man. I thought it swung pretty damn hard!

I noticed that you didn't really swing this interpretation that much. Is that because of the stacatto left hand stride accompaniment? Just a thought.
1979saxman 1 year ago
@1979saxman Yes, a style choice because of the stride and the Monk origin.

really great sound; so realistic and smooth; and by the way: your playing is pure joy for me!

Thanks sbteech25. I like the sound of the Zoom H4n supplemented with a ribbon mic. On Georgia, I used the H4n by itself and it wasn't quite as full.

@7notemode
what video camera did you use, and how do you sync it up with the Zoom and the other mic?
cciemail 1 year ago
@cciemail I use a Canon HF10 and sync the movie track in Logic on a MacBookPro.

In addition to the outstanding sound quality, the ease at which you perform a piece filled with complexity and nuances amazes me.

The genius of Monk's composition and Chick's playing of this tune inspired me to learn it. I played it more in a Monk style. Thanks johnp234.

The documentary was great; it opened my eyes (ears actually) to Monk and the fact that not all of his stuff was 'difficult'. Great sound quality Tom.

That's an interesting story, Ho0chie. Pannonica is one of the great dedication jazz tunes.

I did some research to find Pannonica herself was her granmother... anyway keep up the great work !
