Having worked at Yale University, and having left in June 2000, that the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) had an entire floor dedicated to caged primates. The door had a sign for authorized entry only. I was told that the behavior of anyone entering the area had to mimic the researchers, or violent behavior could ensue. There were no windows on that wing that I could see from the door window. I worked as Senior Mechanical Engineer in Facilities. I know where all the animal labs are.

Many Humans find the apes to be quite interesting, and even funny. As long as people want to see live apes, the apes shall survive. Similar to the American Bison, the apes would be largely located in preserves. In U.S., Bison have rebounded to the point that in season, they are harvested for meat. I don't believe that we will ever be wholly chimp-less.
