I remember this one clearly to this day. The game was in the middle of the night in Sweden, I had both my balcony doors open and when Ravelli saves the last penalty, everywhere around me, people was yelling ,screaming and shouting! Guess there was a lot of people that came in late for work the following morning.. :-)
1994, it was truly a magic summer in sweden that year. Just amazing!
By the way, Sweden beat Holland 3:2 on 12-10 2011 so we got a good chance to advance during the European Championship games in 2012 so romanians just should shut the f:ck up; they don't have anything to come with...only begging for money on the subway trains in Stockholm; what a shame!

Sen är det mycket roligare att kolla på hockey än fotboll det går snabbt och det är tufft spel, fotboll är ofta ganska långtråkigt men vissa matcher är kul att kolla på då det händer något. The problem was, I believe, that the Romanian manager let Petrescu and Belodedici have a go. They may have been good defenders, but I believe that if Hagi and Munteanu had taken their penalties instead, Romania would've won. And if Stelea or Duckadam would've been goalkeepers, they wouldn't have made Prunea's heartbreak error which enabled Andersson to score the equalizer.
It's hard to believe that this was 1994 when soccer players wore shorts shorter than today, compared of what today's world cup players i.e South Africa 2010, Germany 2006 & Korea/Japan 2002...

hello everybody, especially Sweedish people. I remember that match well. Sweden played dirty with many fouls that the referee didn´t punish as he should have. It should have never gotten to penalties. Anyway Sweden lost later on because the team didn´t have what it took to move on. Romania would have done much better. Sweden was better from a physical point but lacked technicality. All the best to you all!

I can't really say which team I consider the best, neither can I pick sides because I'm born in Sweden but both my parents are Romanian. OFC the Romanians thought they should've won and ofc the Swedes disagree, but the CNN commentary was on Romania's side.
BTW a penalty shootout is never a good way of seeing who is best. That's why I don't like them.

@xxxx85 Sveriges första guld i OS efter dominans de tidigare mästerskapen av Kanada och Sovjetunionen, klart det inte betyder nåt för en som bara bryr sig om fotboll... det är inte så lätt och betydelselöst att vinna ett OS-guld i hockey som du vill få det att låta som. Sen är det mycket roligare att kolla på hockey än fotboll det går snabbt och det är tufft spel, fotboll är ofta ganska långtråkigt men vissa matcher är kul att kolla på då det händer något. Haha, "Rugby" och "Cricket".....

Herregud, du måste väl inse att hockey är en liten pseudosport i detta sammanhang..? Eller? Det har absolut ingenting att göra med att jag inte gillar sporten, det har att göra med att sett internationellt är till exempel BASKET en sjukt mycket större sport än ishockey (Basket är ju till och med större i USA, ett land där hockey faktiskt är känt).
Angående att hockey skulle vara roligare än fotboll: En hel värld tycker annorlunda.

@xxxx85 Vad har hela världen att göra med vad vi tycker i Sverige? Basket betyder inget i Sverige och det är väl endå Sverige vi pratar om här? Fotboll är populärast i Sverige om man räknar på utövare sen kommer innebandy, Golf och Hockey bland män. Innebandy vs hockey i publik vinner hockey lätt. Fattiga länder spelar ju inte ens hockey för att det är för dyrt och har aldrig sett sporten så inte konstigt att dom bara bryr sig om fotboll? I Sverige är ett OS-Guld i Hockey Väldigt stort.

@Shalilify Seriously it's almost a mystery how Romania fell on penalties every time in the 90s... PSO loss in 1990, PSO loss in 1994, penalty py Davor Suker in 1998 in the 45th minute... and Mutu penalty miss in Euro 2008 for some present history.

The problem was, I believe, that the Romanian manager let Petrescu and Belodedici have a go. They may have been good defenders, but I believe that if Hagi and Munteanu had taken their penalties instead, Romania would've won. And if Stelea or Duckadam would've been goalkeepers, they wouldn't have made Prunea's heartbreak error which enabled Andersson to score the equalizer.

Also, I wonder who'd have won if Romania had played Helmuth Duckadam as goalkeeper. I couldn't help feeling sad for Romania at 1:13 but that's world cup knockout stages for you - only one team can prevail.

hello everybody, especially Sweedish people. I remember that match well. Sweden played dirty with many fouls that the referee didn´t punish as he should have. It should have never gotten to penalties. Anyway Sweden lost later on because the team didn´t have what it took to move on. Romania would have done much better. Sweden was better from a physical point but lacked technicality. All the best to you all!

@danieleliasson19 The CNN conclusion was that Romania deserved to win the game, as they were more creative and played better. I can't really say which team I consider the best, neither can I pick sides because I'm born in Sweden but both my parents are Romanian. OFC the Romanians thought they should've won and ofc the Swedes disagree, but the CNN commentary was on Romania's side.
BTW a penalty shootout is never a good way of seeing who is best. That's why I don't like them.
