I directed the 11 PM newscasts at WFMY during this time period. Yes, to those who correctly guessed the Gannett look to the newscast. Harte Hanks purchased the station, brought in Mark Conrad as the GM. Larry Perret (EP) was the genius. Bruce MacCallum was the producer. Magid provided the data. Larry patterned the news format on the format used by KBTV (3), now KUSA in Denver. Music package was the same as well. It was a fun, but very busy show to direct. I was eventually recruited to WRAL.
I love the soaring violins in the closing cut of "It's All Right Here," better than the non-violins.
I'm not a big fan of the opening video to WFMY, as shown in Media Probes documentary; I can't get enough of the action shots opens from KBTV Denver (now KUSA), KARK Little Rock, and WTNH New Haven (Connecitcut); helicopters, news trucks, city shots, fly by the seat of your pants.
and they used that opening cut of "It's All Right Here," like WFMY used in the non-action-shots.
I was 5 when this came out and lord rest her soul, it didn't matter if they were having a paint drying tournament on, if it was on channel 2, my dearly loved grandmother from danville va was gonna watch it!! Her tv never moved!!! TY so much for these fond memories!!!
I am pretty sure that the "It's All Right Here" music was done by Peters Productions - I've even talked to Ed Peters, who vaguely recalls it, but doesn't have much of a memory of all the various projects he did.
Unfortunately, SouthernMedia seems to refuse to add this info...
You are correct... it was Peters Productions. And it is on SouthernMedia. Look Under the THEME page and then click on PACKAGES. Peters Productions is toward the bottom of the page. Good luck!
This station during this era was featured in a "Media Probes" documentary about local television news hosted by John Cameron Swayze. The Frank Magid consulting firm out of Iowa did a major re-vamp of this station's format. The documentary showed a "before" and "after." I spoke with Susan Kidd (a very kind woman) in the late 1990s when she was at WRC-TV about the circa 1980 format change at channel 2 in Greensboro, N.C. She said to the effect of "They really turned that place inside out."
This is one of my all-time favorite news themes! Thank you for posting. WLKY-TV in Louisville used the same closing music in the early '80s. The graphics at the end were the same as well, except that the "32 Alive" logo was used instead of "News 2" and the font for the footage location was different. WLKY's close had no voiceover at the end.
Did they ever show anyone that used the middle finger?

I wonder if KBTV Denver ever used the soaring violins version of the It's All Right Here closing cut.

I can't believe that I had forgotten all about the 'number one' segments at the end of the newscast. I miss those days. Thanks for posting this.

A very Gannett-ish look, even though they wouldn't own WFMY until later on.

Do you have an open to this? This is interesting since I'm from North Carolina (Warrenton, not Greensboro).
