@beanybop100 He isn't dead. (Spoiler ahead) If you play the last mission of Halo 3 on legendary and watch after the credits, you will see that he is not dead. He is off drifting towards a mysterious planet because only half of the ship made it to Earth. Also 343 said they will continue the story of Master Chief and Cortana.
