  • i would do this outside

  • It'd be really cool if people could buy a portable sprinkler system to set up over the tree just in case. Or maybe they should mandate that Christmas tree lights only be made from fiber optics. Even better, make it a battery powered system instead of needing to be plugged in.

  • hmm i guess this isnt what people watch on christmas

  • Hurry Click SnowFlake in Video Player

  • Luckily fresh trees don't burn that fast. So keep it watered and get rid of it, if it's getting dry. And as always, keep your documents in reach and know your exits. Merry X-Mas!

  • There's something sketchy about that rabbit.

  • Oh no!

  • i dont think its fair to put a timer on a video that is sped up

  • @ericb0730 someone is retarded and it's not me

  • IT'S REGENERATING

  • This is why I opt for the plastic model.

  • That's awesome!!!

  • The whole time i was thinking, "awwwww the poor stuffed bunny" :'(

  • oh poop super mario all stars on wii and a wii is NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • bagon did it

  • Oh noes gta is burning...

  • There goes the presents...sigh...

  • nuts...was hoping this was the song I was looking for. Well, either way stay safe this year

  • Wow, plastic christmas trees burn quickly, you might as well have put a bucket of gasoline there.

  • @zoquibax It was not plastic.

  • @neonninja5 rly? omg

  • By the time your smoke alarm goes off, you wake up, and you get to the bedroom door and open it, your family is dead.

  • what happen to the bunny?

  • FIFTY SECONDS: The time it takes for a single christmas tree light to engulf your house in flames. Scary.

  • that fire spread fast

  • wow almost immediate ignition and rollover! Great video.

  • not the bunny!

  • Holyshit some one call aquaman!

  • I'm a firefighter with a background in fire science and yes that's real, and it can happen that fast. Read up on flashover or fire growth to understand the middle-end parts a bit better.

Also, it bears mentioning that the fuel load in your average living room is absolutely incredible. Think about it: Basically everything you sit on or use for entertainment, every furnishing or decoration, is a petroleum product of some kind.

  • this sucks they had to burn a good house just for this...

  • bye bye house

  • Who cares fake or not this is played to children about fire safety

  • Ya, I have a video about Christmas trees on fire, and if it's upright, it goes up fast! I belive it.

  • That's not fake. I have seen firsthand a wharehouse dock become engulfed quicker than that. After 12 seconds, the security camera was recording a dark room.

  • holy crap! that is really what would happen too

  • Christmas trees can be dangerous

  • HOLY SHIT!!!...That aint no plastic tree!

  • Yep - it's a demonstration of how quickly a dry fir tree burns.

  • ahh, Christmas- a time for spreading cheer and hazardous fires.

  • And to think people in centuries past not only used a real tree, but decorated it with lit candles.

  • I still use use a real tree.

  • houses must have been going down like crazy during christmas back then

  • wow . . . look at the fire on the lampshade at 00:38 it looks as if the fire is "dripping" onto the floor like water! O_O As cool as real trees are I don't see why having a fake tree is so "lame." At least you don't have to water it and worry about it catching on fire and clean up pine needles on the ground!

  • this fire rigade guy came into our school today and showed us this video i also said it lokked like water or magma dripping off the drawers

  • yeah because its plastic lol, have you never been playing with plasticstuff and fire?

  • youre right there must have been an accelerant used, matbe if the tree was sprayed down with a treater to keep its color longer like a dye, also the room was closed of to much smoke built up to fast in one area

  • They burn just like that. I know my sister was killed by a Christmas tree fire. December 13, 2002. Please don't put lights on a real tree.

  • gosh, i'm sorry man. ;-(

  • Sorry for your loss dude

I know for one this is not fake. I was a firefighter for 27 years and have also seen first hand what a Christmas tree fire and do,

  • How is it NOT fake? it is a demonstration made by NIST to show that if you use a real tree and do not water it, it will be so dry and will end up catching on fir easier. You can even see the NIST logo on the video.

  • were you really hoping to see someones house burn down? or do you think those are fancy lasers and an industrial sized fog machine?

  • This sort of propaganda just burns me up!

There are DEFINITELY accelerants used in this demo. Yes a dry tree can be dangerous, (just like a fake tree) but it does not go up that fast & there seems to be a mini-explosion near the top. Videos like this are irresponsible in that they cause irrational fear.

According to the NFPA., 0.12 % of residential fires involve a X-mas Tree-both real and fake. (When fake trees burn, though, they can omit toxins from the PVC used in making them.)

  • I think an organization like NIST is a reputable source for information used to provide safety to the public and fire service....this video is a true demonstration of a small ignitiion source starting a fire in an improperly watered tree

  • I am a fireman so i know what i'm talking about and it can go this fast you can say inpossible and small explosion and things like that but that's what happens in real life. a christmastree can be totally burned down in 5 seconds cause what do you tink about the light in the christmastree? that speeds it up big time

  • You are a fucking retard. Have you ever burned a pine tree in a fire pit? Even if it is fresh, it still burns like this.

  • @Pootilypoot yay yet ANOTHER ignorant person.

  • "However, it is, of course, staged in a controlled environment"

I was the cinematographer that filmed this fire. Yes it was staged, but staged to be physically realistic. No accelerants or extra inflammable materials were used it was a freestanding building.

The tree was slightly dry, similar to a tree that was not regularly watered.

The spark that set it off would be similar to an electrical fault. Look at the sofa & tv that ignites through radiant heat, no direct flame contact needed

    Mike B

  • bunnys ears got on fire

  • this is just another reminder of how fast a controllable room and contents fire could turn into several fully involved rooms, or just a surround and drown situation, in a short period of time. Of course this was with a dry tree to realy aware people of the dangers.

  • OMG

My Granmothers House burnt down like that on Christmas Day!

She unplugged the tree to go to the store to get more food and when she unplugged it a spark came and caused a little fire but she didnt see it

and when she came around the corner back to her house the whole Freekin Street was covered in black smoke and fire trucks

the whole house was gone even the Basement

  • I hope bunny is all right :3

  • this is shocking. i ca't believe it spreads so quickly

  • shit

there goes your house in 48 seconds

  • . . . wow

  • mythbusters...

  • In Germany, many people put live candles into their trees. We do every year, and it's awesome.

This video is impressive and shocking, though. However, it is, of course, staged in a controlled environment, and the fire has been planted optimally (way down from the bottom, and a very hot flame, probably gas)

  • I Bet It Wasnt A Holly Jolly Christmas That Year.

  • ahhh i have seen this in college, it was just an experiment, *phew*

  • poop out of your ass!!! it works

  • did the bunny make it or what?

  • lol

  • mom: twas the night before christmas...

tiny tim: and the tree caught on fire, and burned all of our dumbasses to crisp

    dad: amen

  • of course, every normal human lights their living room on fire

  • but they do put a space heater next to it lol

  • mmmm i like firefighters :P lol

  • Megan, you should care, you know those pretty little lights everyone puts on their trees? well they can tend to get hot, and if you don't water your tree like you should, you have a disaster waiting to happen. Ignition temperatures of wood can range from 175 - 250 degrees C which isn't really that hot. Your oven can get that hot, and if you don't have the proper extension cords and whatnot, then those wires can get super hot. Take it from me, I am a Firefighter/EMT.

  • really is that how it happens?

  • yea the way things are made these days (synthetics) rooms are starting to flashover in less than a min. not always will it happen like this but its a scary reminder.

  • i think this is just an experiment for firefighters or something because they do that alot

  • holy s!

  • aww this is sad! "Yeah i'm just gonna watch this tree movie to get my holiday spirit up!"

"Ahh! Someone please! SAVE THE POOR BUNNY!"

"Im goin with artificial this year." =(

  • Wow, screw natural christmas trees

  • They could have moved the bunny!

  • Poor tree.

  • thats sick

  • ummmm ok...tool

  • the teachter used this movie for evacuation.

  • It's the lights the tree will stand in a room by itsself for a million years untill stupid humans get involved and put faulty lights on them!!!

  • How does this happen so we can prevent it?

  • Thats why i`m in the Voluter- Firebrigade of my Town. It`s a great thing. We have the same equipment as the normal full time Firebrigade

If your town offers you something like that, do it it Rocks.

    A Firefighter

(Sorry for my english it`s a foreign language for me).

  • A buddy of mine just burned out his apartment last Christmas eve this way. Too real. I saw the insurance photos of the apartment. Then sent me here to watch this when I asked for the full details. Also said that luckily the ceiling was high - a fireball went up to it and then came down to the level of his scalp, but not as far as his wife's. His hair singed - hers not.

He, his wife and little boy are fine. He probably also needed a hair cut and a drink afterwards.

  • Big duke I dont know if you can read but he said wet as in not dry. He didn't say anything being treated about treated. He might have meant watered and he might have meant freshly chopped. Either one would make it a lot harder to set the tree on fire.

  • my class watched this at school for a fire saftey thing

  • yes typically these things will take your whole house out without ANY time to respond so the best thing you can do is get out of your house as FAST as you can

  • I new some people that lived in a trailor and had this happen. The whole family burned to death.

  • what a crock of shit

  • No it happend.its a shitty thing but it happend.

  • Me too, but luckily the family I knew survived. Their home, belongings, presents, everything was gone, though.

  • yeah its a sad thing.

  • was the tree ok?

  • oh my god that's terrifying

  • this was shown on mythbusters

  • Gladly, there are millions of cheap Chinese plastic Christmas trees that burn a lot slower...

    :D

    Merry Christmas everyone!

  • this happen to my christmas tree once

  • Oh my god, i didnt know that it would react that fast.

  • Tree sap is not only a hydrocarbon, the resin tends to be loaded with highly volatile terpines. In the winter time, when the sap concentrates in the base of pines, it's not an uncommon phenomenon for them to explode violently during brush fires. The rapidly expanding gas from oxidation (simple sugar oxidation yield H20 and C02 eventually) can launch them like rockets, helping to spread the conflagration.

  • Wet trees tell a different story. A single match could not ignite a watered tree. A second attempt in which an electric current ignited an entire matchbook failed to fire the tree. Finally they applied an open flame to the tree using a propane torch. The branches ignited briefly, but self-extinguished when the researchers removed the torch from the branches.

  • You are not part of the christmas tree industry or a lobbyist for a special interest group? I'm a career firefighter and we did a few of these for the local media at the training academy. We utilized a candle flame as the ignition source on trees that were advertised as "treated" and guess what? The results were very much like what this video shows. I refuse to have a live tree in my home.

  • wow, thats insane how quick it went

  • That video isn't depressing enough. Put a crib by the tree instead of a chair.

  • with a baby in it lol

  • lol, im putting this on my blog.

  • why do you people record this

  • its most likely for studying purposes

  • oh that makes sense now thanks

  • That would be one you'd never forget!!!!

  • SAVE THE BUNNY!!!!

  • No its not retard OMG

  • yes marry christmas

  • Only way the tree doesnt become a fire hazard is if it's soaking wet. Seriously. A dead tree will be dry as kindling. Take it from a firefighter. Keep it heavily watered or just go artificial. Artificial trees are coated with flame retardant to keep them from igniting.

  • Marry Christmas to everyone

  • Merry Christmas to you too.

  • yes merry christams all

  • Exactly why my family has a fake tree!

  • Someone Save the bunny! SAVE THE BUNNY!!!!

  • this is why you keep the lights off when you go to sleep

  • Those videos of Xmas tree fires used to frighten me as a kid. Now I've developed an allergy to real trees and we've had our fake tree for five years now.

Now I just have to worry about it exploding.

  • I am never buying a real tree again. O.o

  • that kind of ruins the christmas spirt, doesnt it? buying a tree thats <b> <u> <i>FAKE...

  • Will it be the only thing fake at xmas or will the seasons greetings and goodwill to all men be fake also.....I think the artificial tree will be the least fake thing at this time of year

  • Someone save the poor bunny off the floor before he gets his ass flamin' HOT!!

  • this is shocking. i ca't believe it spreads so quickly

  • So don't leave the lights on when you're not there and don't let the tree dry out. *Wags finger.* ^_^

  • Hmmmm... I think I'll go water the tree now. And Unplug the lights. And buy a fake tree.

  • hah what a great comment.

    merry christmas.

  • And I always thought my parents were just cheap--they just wanted us to live to see New Years Day!
