Well, that's the sort of bully-boy tactics the buffoons on the American right often commit. They shout down the opposition with aggression, fraudulent claims, recourse to 'faith'/ the irrational 'ideology' of 'what is American', and the most contrived propaganda imaginable.
So many fools out there praying to a non-existent being. Wasting their Sundays when they could actually be out there being "Christian" like and helping other people, but instead they waste time praying and singing to no-one.
Fearful, indoctrinated, self righteous, gullible and sometimes evil fools.
Otherwise, very smart in a lot of cases, but feeling guilty about becoming an athiest, because mom and dad would probably dis-own them.
When Christians make '' daily verbal hell death threats '' against children , then the Courts should Jail those Preachers until they refrain for such foolishness .
@mkrulic517439 freedom of speech doesnt include threatening speech. of course it does include offensive speech but once you cross the line and begin making threats then you are no longer protected
@mkrulic517439 but xtians believe this is real, its not metaphorical. IMO therefore it should be considered actual REAL threats, since xtians intend this to be real. I grew up in a crazed xtian church who taught us we would burn if we didnt follow bibles, jesus gods etc. this was real for me then, I couldnt sleep and was always afraid of the tortures of hell. these threats are very real to children

Look whos talking! A militant atheist crackpot DRUNK scumbag! the same Christopher Hitchens who attaccked Mother Teresa in death! and said we deserved it on 9/11 just like Falwell did, but no one ever talks about what Hitch said on 9/11.
if hitchens really did say we deserved 9/11 or anything close to that, share the article or video with us. you've got a computer right in front of you. really, there's no excuse for making bullshit claims like this when you have the most powerful reference tool the world has ever known right at your fingertips.
Was against integration, claimed September 11 was deserved, supported settlers on the West Bank while being anti-Semetic in the US, and had the nerve to hide it behind ¨Christianity¨(which is exactly the opposite). Yeah, this Englishman was on to something...
Falwell is scum who used ignorant people yearning for "divine" scripture and "Godly" answers as a way to make a fanciful living. Everyone dies, get used to it, the same generic eulogy is sickening, especially for trash like this.
One small point: Fallwell was evil. Christopher Hitchens was not "mocking" him, he ways saying it like it is. So what if Fallwell died, there's no reason for anyone to bend over backwards and kiss his dead ass for all the evil he brought into the world.
You are all rejoicing over the death of a fellow human being? I was no Falwell lover but to gloat over anothers death say that you are moral perverts and worse than what you accuse him of being.
You have some real mental issues. Obviously your mother and father did not raise you in the right way. I deplore your anti-social attitudes over the death of a fellow human being.
Maybe you're right Stan, just last night I got extremely irritated (you're probably say I was on a 'murderous rampage'), when some facist jumped in from of me in line. I told him I was there first. If I had not been so tired I would have... told him again - God help me! I'm sick!
Look. If you write something stupid, people will make fun of you 11 months later! I piss on Falwell's grave in front of his kids. Does that bother you?
"I don't think it's compatible with a Christian ethic to ignore the environmental degradation that we face; it is a moral question for everyone and therefore a present imperative. It's perfectly true that nearly a quarter of carbon emissions on the face of the globe are attributable to the usage of the United States, and the leadership of the United States has been very slow to catch up with this" - Archbishop of Canterbury (note: Falwell defended SUV's)
I always laugh when atheists describe how much they wish someone went to hell, or that someone was evil. If you're an atheist then by your ideology it's illogical to even believe in the existence of such things. Jerry Falwell was a kind, noble, spirited man. My only regret is that I was unable to have the honor of meeting him. (I also cracked up when this guy made references to Mr, Falwell's weight, since Mr. Hitchens isn't looking much better himself)
Did you even listen to what he said? He said: "It's a shame there is no hell for him to go to." He's not wishing him to hell, because that would be absurd.
Religion does not define evil, and it is the attempt of religion to do so which causes it to create so much strife, discrimination and hatred. Evil is a relative concept.
You've never met Falwell, yet you know he was a kind, noble and sprited man? More assertions without evidence, nice.
My bad, it's funny how little compassion he has for his fellow man. As for evil, Christianity has already defined that as a state of Godlessness. Such instances would be murder, fornication, homosexuality, obscenity, lust, and pretty much whatever is harmful for others. Atheists can't accept the notion of evil because, according to them, we are all simply animals without purpose and should do whatever we see fit.
"Atheists can't accept the notion of evil because, according to them, we are all simply animals without purpose and should do whatever we see fit." - berserker. how many athiests do you know? You really think that all athiests believe this? If you truly do, well... wow
I have a few friends who are atheists actually. If you are an atheist and believe in the theory of evolution, then you must assume that humans are just some sort of advanced animal, since you reject the theory of a superior being. Since, according to that reasoning, we are all animals, then what could be our purpose in life aside from simply surviving?
"Atheists can't accept the notion of evil because, according to them, we are all simply animals without purpose and should do whatever we see fit" - berserker
"I'm not saying that atheists don't know what's right and wrong" - berserker
you believe that somehow you float away after you die to some magical land and live forever. thus you attach a purpose to your life, to reach this magical place. I do not believe this place exists, I believe it is made up by our frightened ancestors. You assign your life false purpose, where atheists do not
What purpose do you have in your life? What in your beliefs gives you any reason to believe that you or I have any worth whatsoever? Unlike you, I have an instruction book to life which tells me that you and I have a purpose, and that is to serve the Lord by pleasing him with your actions.
"Unlike you, I have an instruction book to life which tells me that you and I have a purpose, and that is to serve the Lord by pleasing him with your actions."
really? you have an instruction book for life? then you admit that when you have children, you will stone them to death if they talk back to you?
Leviticus 20:9 says that children must be put to death if they curse their parents. exactly 4 lines above the your justification for hating homosexuals. It is terribly frightening, yet revealing that atheists usually know more about the bible than the people who CLAIM to live their lives according to it
I don't hate homosexuals, I hate homosexuality. God is talking to the Israelites at that time, and everything was a lot different then. You have to take some of this stuff into context, thats why we have logic.
so the bible is the infallible word of god, but it is also subjective. these two passages are literally on the same page, yet you claim to understand the mind of god and know that he doesnt want you to take line 9 seriously anymore, but to still follow line 13?
There's a difference between the commandments of God and the punishments he told the Israelites to administer. You see, at that time the Israelites were pretty much the only somewhat righteous people in the land, so it was imperative that they destroy any source of evil in the country. The commandments should still be followed, though the punishments have changed. Kinda like how the punishments for murder are different in each country, some use hanging, some use life imprisonment.
You say that the bible is your moral handbook. Fine, you can pick and choose which parts you want and get your moral values from this interpretation. How on earth can you not understand how someone could get their morals from philosophies which are much more articulate and coherent than what is found in the bible?
For instance, do on to others as you would have them do onto you, is an easy code to live by that takes care of much of the morals you see atheists display
Yes, but since you are a self proclaimed atheist you do not believe in the existence of a supernatural being, correct? You believe that there is no such thing as the spirit or spiritual realm, and therefore there are no supreme commandments that you are required to follow.
interesing question, alhough i am a bit confused, by it. maybe you could clarify a tad? ithis is a difficult philosophical question... i would say that good and evil are both in a manner, subjective, and not something that "exists", they are human concepts and labels applied to the material world. ie. before humans, in the era of the dinosaurs, there was no good or evil
another difficult question... a utilitarian, like bentham or mill, might say that good is what results in the greatest amount of total happiness for every sentient being. Kant might say only act, if you would wish that action to become a universal law. I guess i would lean toward the utilitarian perspective, personally. its very difficult to give a definition to what is "good"
Well, definition aside, the point that I was trying to make is that it seems very unlikely for principles like good, or "right", to come from, if you believe in evolution, highly evolved apes, since it's animal nature to simply care for one's own survival and maybe the survival of one's young.
the origins of human morality likely come from a combination of evolutionary factors. Most importantly, repeated social interaction. animals that go around killing their parents and family members do not survive as a species, the ones that flourish are the ones that can cooperate. we see morality strikingly similiar to our own in chimps
So, according to your argument, morality such as self sacrifice is only necessary when it will help preserve the species? If showing compassion to someone won't benefit the species survival at all, then compassion is not necessary.
no, i wouldnt say its "only necessary", but altruism can be shown to benefit group survival. Its not a matter of being necessary. I meant our origins of "morality" or non-selfish behavior, come from our ancestors that lived in small groups. elephants seem to be aware of impending death of a sick companion and show it compassion
but humans are different than almost every animal besides chimps and dolphins i think, that are "self aware". Our level of understanding has reached the point where we can form moral codes, but our instincts to sacrifice for our children, and love those around us certainly have their roots in evolution of our ancestors
But in the end, wouldn't an animal's primal instincts for survival propel it to save itself instead of others? Don't you think that it's way easier to be cowardly than courageous?
Then do you believe that it is also in man's nature to try to save himself instead of his fellow man? If so, do you think that man should follow his primal nature, or do you think that man should care more for the wellbeing of others rather than himself.
If you had to choose whether or not it is yourself or your friend that gets shot, who would you choose? If you and your Grandma were stuck starving somewhere, would you give her your portion of food if you knew it would save her, even when it would cost you your life?
"Some animals are surprisingly sensitive to the plight of others. Chimpanzees, who cannot swim, have drowned in zoo moats trying to save others. Given the chance to get food by pulling a chain that would also deliver an electric shock to a companion, rhesus monkeys will starve themselves for several days"
as for the second part of your question, why wouldnt i act in accordance with what i think is good? I don't understand what you are asking. It seems like a circular question. if i feel something is good, i act like it is good. If i think something is bad, i will act like that thing is bad
Because the Bible is the "Word of God", and we must deviate from it simply because your philosophy isn't stated it in the Bible. Deviate all you want, it won't take you anywhere. To your own way, do your own thing - we will meet again some day "jank", the difference is, I will be standing next to my God, and you, Jank, will be kneeling for your judgment of punishment if you have disobeyed HIM.
I do my best to live my life as Christ/God requires me to; I do make mistakes in my life as everyone does and the one I am making right now is responding to someone who doesn't have a clue about life or the after-life. I am signing off from you, Jank, and no further responses to you are required.
"I do make mistakes in my life as everyone does and the one I am making right now is responding to someone who doesn't have a clue about life or the after-life"
talk about the height of arrogance and bigotry. not only do you claim to know for a fact what happens, if anything, after we die (something no human knows). but you ridicule others for not sharing your own inane beliefs. i am afraid you are lost for good
the god of the bible is a jealous tyrant, i will never "receive him", whatever that means, mostly because he is made up, but also because of his philosophy, actions, and rediclous claims the bible makes
no matter what i "receive" i will never believe the universe was created in six days or that there was a worldwide flood
The instruction book of life is the Bible; if people like you would read it and study it instead of stating what "you hope" are the instructions of life, you would see life differently. Come on "jerk" excuse me "jank" give us Christians a break; you are like Hitchens, you are afraid of what you don't know. I don't know what my future holds, but I know who holds my future! You don't. Pity.........
The whole reason religion exists is because people like you were afraid of what you don't know will happen after you die. If you can't figure that out, you're blind or just kidding yourself. What if you're wrong? you would've wasted the only life you were lucky enough to have. I pitty you.
Are you asking what meaning do I see in life? Why live? I find that atheists value life more than the religious and want to live it to its fullest, because this is the only life we get. in my opinion there is a great amount of meaning in life, to love our fellow humans and respect all the life on earth, basically to realize how precious our time is.
I find this a far greater "purpose" to life, than yours in which you live your life by some archaic rule book, because there is an invisible camera in the sky watching your every move. utterly depressing
It's not really a "rule book", it's a guideline to life. If you believe and put your faith in Jesus Christ, you will be able to receive redemption and eternal life in paradise, and if you act in a way that glorifies Jesus(i.e keeping the rules) then you will live a fuller, less harmful life.
come on man, this is getting tiresome, you say atheists dont have a basis to act moral, then you say that you arent saying that. you say the bible is your instruction book, buts its not really a rule book. So are you saying that parts of the bible are not to be followed?
"As for evil, Christianity has already defined that as a state of Godlessness. Such instances would be murder, fornication, homosexuality, obscenity, lust, and pretty much whatever is harmful for others"
lol, you really believe that fornication, homosexuality and obscenity are harmful to others? HAHAHA. How about the church's stance on aids and condoms? you know, something that actually KILLS people, not these rediclious pruderies that you believe are "evil".
Yes, I do believe they're harmful, as I've actually SEEN and HEARD of the damage they do. Yes, you're right, condoms DO kill the poor people that so blindly put their confidence in them.
Fornication, stds and pregnancy aside, can damage the trust in future relationships, thus making them all the more harder to maintain. Obscenity just makes you sound unintelligent and offensive, and homosexuality is just a perversion of nature and leads to all sorts of trouble.
lol, interesting take on evil. Whats more interesting is that american teens have the same amount of sex as other developed countries, yet are four times more likely to become pregnant, have a baby, or get an abortion. (from Letter to a Christian Nation) Why? because of the rediclious influence that christianity has on sex education.
If it was just abstinence being taught, which it is not, then you would see the positive changes. The culture wouldn't be so sexually motivated and their wouldn't be so much peer pressure to engage in sexual activity.
sigh. the DIFFERENCE between the US and the rest of the countries that have lower rates of things mentioned, IS that the US teaches ABSTINENCE by itself in many parts of the country.
This is why I respect CNN more than other news networks. Cooper was very polite and allowed his guest to actually make points.

Right.
Hitchens is right on the mark.

@mkrulic517439 but xtians believe this is real, its not metaphorical. IMO therefore it should be considered actual REAL threats, since xtians intend this to be real. One small point: Fallwell was evil. Christopher Hitchens was not "mocking" him, he ways saying it like it is. So what if Fallwell died, there's no reason for anyone to bend over backwards and kiss his dead ass for all the evil he brought into the world.

rpsmith1989 4 years ago
I always laugh when atheists describe how much they wish someone went to hell, or that someone was evil. If you're an atheist then by your ideology it's illogical to even believe in the existence of such things. Jerry Falwell was a kind, noble, spirited man. My only regret is that I was unable to have the honor of meeting him. (I also cracked up when this guy made references to Mr, Falwell's weight, since Mr. Hitchens isn't looking much better himself)
berserker496 4 years ago
Did you even listen to what he said? He said: "It's a shame there is no hell for him to go to." He's not wishing him to hell, because that would be absurd.
Religion does not define evil, and it is the attempt of religion to do so which causes it to create so much strife, discrimination and hatred. Evil is a relative concept.
You've never met Falwell, yet you know he was a kind, noble and sprited man? More assertions without evidence, nice.
smmfryguy 4 years ago
My bad, it's funny how little compassion he has for his fellow man. As for evil, Christianity has already defined that as a state of Godlessness. Such instances would be murder, fornication, homosexuality, obscenity, lust, and pretty much whatever is harmful for others. Atheists can't accept the notion of evil because, according to them, we are all simply animals without purpose and should do whatever we see fit.
berserker496 4 years ago

thebigjankowski 4 years ago
I have a few friends who are atheists actually. If you are an atheist and believe in the theory of evolution, then you must assume that humans are just some sort of advanced animal, since you reject the theory of a superior being. Since, according to that reasoning, we are all animals, then what could be our purpose in life aside from simply surviving?

you believe that somehow you float away after you die to some magical land and live forever. thus you attach a purpose to your life, to reach this magical place. I do not believe this place exists, I believe it is made up by our frightened ancestors. You assign your life false purpose, where atheists do not
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
What purpose do you have in your life? What in your beliefs gives you any reason to believe that you or I have any worth whatsoever? Unlike you, I have an instruction book to life which tells me that you and I have a purpose, and that is to serve the Lord by pleasing him with your actions.
berserker496 4 years ago
"Unlike you, I have an instruction book to life which tells me that you and I have a purpose, and that is to serve the Lord by pleasing him with your actions."
really? you have an instruction book for life? then you admit that when you have children, you will stone them to death if they talk back to you?

"Now you're just being ridiculous" -berserk

thebigjankowski 4 years ago
Where does it say to stone your children in the Bible?
berserker496 4 years ago
Leviticus 20:9 says that children must be put to death if they curse their parents. exactly 4 lines above the your justification for hating homosexuals. It is terribly frightening, yet revealing that atheists usually know more about the bible than the people who CLAIM to live their lives according to it
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
I don't hate homosexuals, I hate homosexuality. God is talking to the Israelites at that time, and everything was a lot different then. You have to take some of this stuff into context, thats why we have logic.
berserker496 4 years ago
so the bible is the infallible word of god, but it is also subjective. these two passages are literally on the same page, yet you claim to understand the mind of god and know that he doesnt want you to take line 9 seriously anymore, but to still follow line 13?
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
There's a difference between the commandments of God and the punishments he told the Israelites to administer. You see, at that time the Israelites were pretty much the only somewhat righteous people in the land, so it was imperative that they destroy any source of evil in the country. The commandments should still be followed, though the punishments have changed. Kinda like how the punishments for murder are different in each country, some use hanging, some use life imprisonment.
berserker496 4 years ago
You say that the bible is your moral handbook. Fine, you can pick and choose which parts you want and get your moral values from this interpretation. How on earth can you not understand how someone could get their morals from philosophies which are much more articulate and coherent than what is found in the bible?
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
For instance, do on to others as you would have them do onto you, is an easy code to live by that takes care of much of the morals you see atheists display
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
Yes, but since you are a self proclaimed atheist you do not believe in the existence of a supernatural being, correct? You believe that there is no such thing as the spirit or spiritual realm, and therefore there are no supreme commandments that you are required to follow.
berserker496 4 years ago
Yes I hold all these beliefs.
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
Then what is, in the general meaning of the word, good in your opinion and why should you act in accordance with what is good?
berserker496 4 years ago
interesing question, alhough i am a bit confused, by it. maybe you could clarify a tad? ithis is a difficult philosophical question... i would say that good and evil are both in a manner, subjective, and not something that "exists", they are human concepts and labels applied to the material world. ie. before humans, in the era of the dinosaurs, there was no good or evil
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
Would you say that the human principle of good is doing what is beneficial to one's self, or what is beneficial to another person.
berserker496 4 years ago
another difficult question... a utilitarian, like bentham or mill, might say that good is what results in the greatest amount of total happiness for every sentient being. Kant might say only act, if you would wish that action to become a universal law. I guess i would lean toward the utilitarian perspective, personally. its very difficult to give a definition to what is "good"
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
Well, definition aside, the point that I was trying to make is that it seems very unlikely for principles like good, or "right", to come from, if you believe in evolution, highly evolved apes, since it's animal nature to simply care for one's own survival and maybe the survival of one's young.
berserker496 4 years ago
the origins of human morality likely come from a combination of evolutionary factors. Most importantly, repeated social interaction. animals that go around killing their parents and family members do not survive as a species, the ones that flourish are the ones that can cooperate. we see morality strikingly similiar to our own in chimps
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
So, according to your argument, morality such as self sacrifice is only necessary when it will help preserve the species? If showing compassion to someone won't benefit the species survival at all, then compassion is not necessary.
berserker496 4 years ago
no, i wouldnt say its "only necessary", but altruism can be shown to benefit group survival. Its not a matter of being necessary. I meant our origins of "morality" or non-selfish behavior, come from our ancestors that lived in small groups. elephants seem to be aware of impending death of a sick companion and show it compassion
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
but humans are different than almost every animal besides chimps and dolphins i think, that are "self aware". Our level of understanding has reached the point where we can form moral codes, but our instincts to sacrifice for our children, and love those around us certainly have their roots in evolution of our ancestors
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
But in the end, wouldn't an animal's primal instincts for survival propel it to save itself instead of others? Don't you think that it's way easier to be cowardly than courageous?
berserker496 4 years ago
yes. and yes.
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
Then do you believe that it is also in man's nature to try to save himself instead of his fellow man? If so, do you think that man should follow his primal nature, or do you think that man should care more for the wellbeing of others rather than himself.
berserker496 4 years ago
I dont understand why you think man cant have the will to survive and also be able to be compassionate to his fellow man.
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
He can, but eventually he must choose between self-preservation and compassion.
berserker496 4 years ago
really? You dont have the virtue of self-preservation? Or you mean you dont have compassion? When do you have to choose?
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
If you had to choose whether or not it is yourself or your friend that gets shot, who would you choose? If you and your Grandma were stuck starving somewhere, would you give her your portion of food if you knew it would save her, even when it would cost you your life?
berserker496 4 years ago
depends on how good a friend. :) what is your point?
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
"Some animals are surprisingly sensitive to the plight of others. Chimpanzees, who cannot swim, have drowned in zoo moats trying to save others. Given the chance to get food by pulling a chain that would also deliver an electric shock to a companion, rhesus monkeys will starve themselves for several days"
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
as for the second part of your question, why wouldnt i act in accordance with what i think is good? I don't understand what you are asking. It seems like a circular question. if i feel something is good, i act like it is good. If i think something is bad, i will act like that thing is bad
thebigjankowski 4 years ago

Are you asking what meaning do I see in life? Why live? I find that atheists value life more than the religious and want to live it to its fullest, because this is the only life we get. in my opinion there is a great amount of meaning in life, to love our fellow humans and respect all the life on earth, basically to realize how precious our time is.
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
Yes, time is indeed precious. It seems that we have different opinions on what it means to live life to its fullest though.

thebigjankowski 4 years ago
It's not really a "rule book", it's a guideline to life. If you believe and put your faith in Jesus Christ, you will be able to receive redemption and eternal life in paradise, and if you act in a way that glorifies Jesus(i.e keeping the rules) then you will live a fuller, less harmful life.

Fornication, stds and pregnancy aside, can damage the trust in future relationships, thus making them all the more harder to maintain. Obscenity just makes you sound unintelligent and offensive, and homosexuality is just a perversion of nature and leads to all sorts of trouble.
berserker496 4 years ago
lol, interesting take on evil. Whats more interesting is that american teens have the same amount of sex as other developed countries, yet are four times more likely to become pregnant, have a baby, or get an abortion. (from Letter to a Christian Nation) Why? because of the rediclious influence that christianity has on sex education.
thebigjankowski 4 years ago
If it was just abstinence being taught, which it is not, then you would see the positive changes. The culture wouldn't be so sexually motivated and their wouldn't be so much peer pressure to engage in sexual activity.
