I can`t understand why some dudes here separate Pavement from Nirvana and similar. There are good bands and there are average bands. Some girls shine and some not.Classifications like " Indie Rock" are invented from major labels and MTV and all those puppy journalists around them to promote the business.I can`t classify Pavement, Nirvana, Sonic Youth and few other...because they are so different, style of their own, and as I like to say.."Bands with character and their own story"
@Malkmusianful Exctly.People who bash Nirvana or Pearl Jam or Jane's Addiction etc. because they think it makes them more Indie are idiots.Without these bands, groups like Pavement would never have got a record deal. That's a fact.
@DustyAndPistolPete Nope...Matador weren't looking for acts that sounded like the big bands of that time...those were the major labels who thought that a Alt rock band could roll in big money.
I have a hard time understanding all the people who, instead of finding a different song to listen to, just stay on this page and rail on the music they don't like. Personally I think this song's fuckin' great - not my favorite on Crooked Rain, but I've definitely listened to it multiple times in a row on many occasions.
I first saw this when I was fourteen, and I was pretty sure that none of these guys were actually from Pavement because none of them "looked cool enough to be in a band". Oh, I had so much to learn.
@thenewfella1994 Dude im a huge nirvana fan and I totally agree about smells like teen spirit. Its way too overplayed and overused. I just recently discovered this band and i cant stop listening :D
@thenewfella1994 i agreed with you up until that last line. really, smells like teen spirit is the worst nirvana song ever? really dude? you clearly haven't listened to bleach
I agree with your comment but calling "Smells like Teen Spirit" the worst Nirvana song is a bit of a hyperbole. It's a great song, even if it's a tad overplayed. Best song of the 90'd by the way is Paranoid Android IMO.
@dsf429 As a Radiohead fan, I love Paranoid Android but imo, my favorite would have to be Blowout. Pablo Honey was underrated imo. Along with Weezer's Blue Album, it's one of the best first albums I've ever heard.
I love Pavement. I have everything they've put out. Seen them twice. But this has to be one of my least favorite songs from them. In fact, it's the one song off of CRCR that I skip.
i like how every cock poeacher out there thinks that gay ass arcade fire is soooooo! original, pavement was around before the AFs were jerking off to justin beiber. Sonic youth is another staple of indie music, during the 90's people wouldn't dress like total retards and still enjoy the tunes that indie bands were putting out. My elder sibblings never wore gay ass skinny jeans or non prescription frames, fashion now a days sucks balls and it gargles cum
@nyfootballgiants1 How can you compare the Arcade Fire and Pavement? Their sound isn't even remotely the same. And yes, people in the 90's dressed like fucking retards.
Nobody's forcing anybody to listen to this song. I personally think Paranoid Android was the best song of the 90's, but that's just one man's opinion.
i dont really understand why people are comparing this to nirvana but if thats what were doing i've gotta say smells like teen spirit isnt even the best song on nevermind.
@Greffwe Exactly. My favorite bands are Nirvana and Pavement (and SY). Why bother fighting amongst them? And yeah, Nirvana's best stuff were either B-sides or unreleased. ;)
Nirvana made people turn their back (well for a little while) to the fake rock artist who were releasing the same song over and over again (ac/dc and the likes) and that makes them major influence on music in generall. But talking about Pavement in the same breath as Nirvana is stupid anyway. Totally different bands. People saying "teen spirit" sucks are the same people rocking to it before they Nirvana famous. But now, well, like then, hippsters are too cool for school, if you know what I mean.
pitchfork picked it as a representative of the pavement sound. hence their see also was here, shady lane, adn summer babe, very different songs, to reflect the general sound of the most important band of the decade
Who gives a shit if Pitchfork likes it? I like Pitchfork (CRAZY, I KNOW), but I couldn't give a shit about where they rank music. They're Pavement fanboys anyway, so it figures that this is #1. They think that band pisses rainbows. What really matters here is that this is an awesome song, and whether you like Pitchfork or not, whoever likes this has good taste. Props to whoever said "Range Life" is better, though. :)
Detalhe: Smells Like Teen Spirit, do Nirvana, ficou em 13º lugar. Que merda de ranking é esse? Esse mundo está perdido.
@TeenAngst73 Oh come on! Best song of the 90's?! Dont get me wrong, this is a great song, but its not even the best song on Crooked Rain! (That goes to range life)The best song of the 90's in my opinion is "I am a Scientist" by Guided By Voices.
Love Pavement, Built to Spill, Sebadoah etc.... The Figurines sound so much like Pavement, it's crazy...
