I don't mean to burst everyones bubble, but this performance and interpretation is quite poor and almost juvenile. I would barely expect this from a regional orchestra, let alone an orchestra of the caliber of the NY Phil. I would highly suggest listening to the recordings by Sir Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony. They can be considered the best and most accurate interpretations of Mahler, along with the quality of the performance. This is much too slow for Allegro Energico.
Mitropoulos is everything that Bernstein wanted to be, but without the flamboyance, just an INCREDIBLE conductor who infused every performance he was involved in with an indelible life force and imagination.
He is without a doubt one of the top 10 conductors of all time
Me parece que Mitropoulos fue el primer director en grabar esta obra, o sino uno de los primeros. Es una extraordinaria lectura de la obra y un clásico de la discorafía mahleriana. Notable publicación!!

lettura come sempre fuori dai canoni di Mitropoulos, attento più che all'agogica al timbro e all'estrema cura della frase, e del timbro
un grande

This is a knockout performance of my favourite piece of music.
Mitropoulos seems to have been the third to record the 6th after F.Charles Adler and Edouard Flipse.
He uses rubato to tremendous effect, and so digs into the music rather than just performing it.

terrific! you'll here more polished playing these days but every moment speaks in this performance.
Also,I love the trumpet and clarinet playing.

Mitropoulos's NY Philharmonic recording of the 6th is supposed to be even better than this. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get it.
