Very soothing progressive metal right here. Take BTBAM, The Contortionist, and Last Chance to Reason, force them all to procreate with one another, and this is most definitely what you'd get.
an exact replica of between the buried and me. lololol like took every concept that is between the buried and me and decided to call it progressive because they didnt know how to work "we stole their song formula" into a genre label. from the explosive and chaotic beginning, to the weak breakdowns with sofspoken bullshit then back to the screaming.
@james163163 I just don't like how people label themselves or other bands as being progressive without thinking about what the word really means. It's like a composer calling themselves modernistic when they're just copying what everybody else is doing.
I was under the impression that "prog" is supposed to be progressive. Don't get me wrong - I'm enjoying this band - but I don't see anything that is progressive about it. This song sounds almost exactly like a combination of BTBAM's first four albums. We've all heard those exact sweep arpeggios before. Progressive should be groundbreaking or unique in some way, and this really isn't.
It's a fine definition of prog, just cause they don't have an intense progressive style like BTBAM does don't mean they ain't prog, their more melodic than anything though, pop?
I came here because facebook told me if I liked Animals as Leaders and Periphery I'd like this band. Facebook is wrong 100% of the time about everything.
My only complaint is that it might be TOO btbam influenced. I'm definitely interested in buying the album when it comes out though. Very nice work guys.
This is amazing. I can't believe Decibel only gave you guys a 7. They said your album was a hundred times more listenable than BTBAM but gave 'The Great Misdirect' a 9. Kind of contradicting. I'm a huge BTBAM fan, but I think a lot of the comparisons are unwarranted.
@TheStinkfister you do realize that there's more than one guy/girl reviewing for Decibel right? Different people have different opinions on bands. The guy who reviewed TGM might have given it a nine, but another reviewer might have given it a 5.
@45nothings no, actually I'm retarded. What the hell is a J. Bennett??? All kidding aside, a professional publication should aim for more consistency, agreed?
@TheStinkfister it would be nice if a publication was more consist, but then you could end up with a very bias reviewing system, IE. hating any sort of noise/ambient music = 1/4 while loving prog = 7/10.
@45nothings I'm half anti-Decibel because they gave Wavering Radiant a 7. That shit was album of the year. I'm an ISIS freak, what can I say. Plus they cover way too much black metal.
@TheStinkfister I know how you feel (I personally think Panopticon is one of the best albums ever made) but Wavering did make it in their top 10 (or 15) of the year. Plus, I'm a big black metal fan, so maybe I'm biased as well.
@45nothings I guess they did make up for it by placing Oceanic at #4 on their top 100 albums of the decade, but Wavering Radiant was such an amazing album, it simply did not get the credit it deserved. It was a complete evolution of the band, a complete evolution of post-metal. All the bands that came out imitating the Panopticon-sound will pale in comparison to the littany of groups trying to recreate the magic of WR.
@TheStinkfister I agree that Decibel didn't really give that album the credit it probably deserved, but I think we can both agree that Isis albums are definitely growers, and that they grow better the more you listen to them. For the guy who reviewed it, I don't know how many times he listened to it, but he probably had his own biases and preferences to the album. I totally agree with you on the matter of a new wave of post - whatever bands coming out and coping their style though.
@45nothings Oh yeah, they are definitely growers. ITAOT I think was made to have instant appeal in certain parts but ISIS albums definitely need multiple listens to be appreciated. I am so sad they broke up. They were setting themselves up to be the indy-er successors to the throne of Tool, in my opinion. And they had just blossomed musically, to be honest. Seeing the WR tour compared to the ITAOT and Panopticon tours they were so much more loose and vibrant, not tight and choreographed.
@TheStinkfister Dude, I wish I had seen them live, it would have been amazing (I know), they were up there with some of the best crossover bands out right now, being able to reach out from metal to alternative to rock to psychedelic to jam crowds evenly without ever making a change to pop music. Truely innovators and I was really heartbroken by their split as well.
@45nothings Songs like Ghost Key and Hand of the Host were introducing new elements to the entire genre of progressive ROCK, the tremolo picked scaling in Ghost Key, the melody swapping guitar-bass parts in HotH, Joe Baressi unlocked their true potential, and then they called it quits. A tragic loss for metal.
@TheStinkfister I wouldn't blame Faith, she might have influenced Aaron to focus on Mammifer a little bit more, but it was (apparently) a mutual split between all the guys. I also find the new Mammifer album great, not metal at all, but still very introspective and progressive/post-y.
@whitearmsofathena1 cant wait for u guys at the blast o mat my friends band is playin with u guys dissonance in design but any way i wanted to say keep makin music u guys r so fuckin amazing especially on shrooms
