The F-16A, maybe (not sure if any of those are even still flying) but the latest block with the 32,000 lb thrust engines and more advanced systems I think are more than a match for the combat-untested J-10. Funny watching armchair generals argue about what plane is going to beat what. People always forget that so much more goes into air combat than what the plane can do. You have to look at the quality of the pilots, the availability of AWACs, experience, etc. Keep in mind that at the beginning of Desert Storm, Iraq had one of the most advanced IADS in the world. The predicted casualty rates for our planes was pretty high - but look at what ended up happening. Hardly any aircraft lost.

The J-10's aerodynamic and combat capabilities are well known to be either equivalent or at least very close to the F-16 by military analysts. That is what it was designed for.

Bold claim to say that J-10 beats an F-16. The way I see it. Both aircraft are comparable hard to say that J-10 is better than an F-16. F-16 is proven and many countries use the F-16. J-10 is relatively new. Unfortunately for the PLAAF that 's an 80's design being produced in the 21st century. They need some catching up to do.

so far in history, the fighter proved best in dog fights is F-16.
none of other planes faced any dog fight, so f22, f35, sukhoi mki 30, all yet to be tested. dont forget paf pilots locked the incoming indian jets last years, but didnt shoot them as they ran away, n those sukhois are said to be most maneuverable but f16 go them.

Funny watching armchair generals argue about what plane is going to beat what. People always forget that so much more goes into air combat than what the plane can do. You have to look at the quality of the pilots, the availability of AWACs, experience, etc. Keep in mind that at the beginning of Desert Storm, Iraq had one of the most advanced IADS in the world. The predicted casualty rates for our planes was pretty high - but look at what ended up happening. Hardly any aircraft lost.

@M11ty The J-10 was never designed to counter a raptor. Its purpose was to provide the Chinese airforce with a very capable multi-role fighter. The J-10's aerodynamic and combat capabilities are well known to be either equivalent or at least very close to the F-16 by military analysts. That is what it was designed for.

The J-10 sports very maneuverable aerodynamic characteristics as does the F-16 and the J-10 carries a similar avionics and weapons array design. So why not? Is it because its Chinese made? I find that we in the US can never seem to admit that chinese can develop technology up to equal standards even as it is happening right in front of our faces. Even American chinese play a big role in US engineering

@TheArfdog It's only new because they were so behind and couldn't have developed the J10 35 years ago. We develop 4th gen fighter in the 1970's, they develop one in the 2000's, we introduce 5th gen fighter in the 2000's, no one else has a 5th gen fighter in service.

@mgibbs88 China and Russia both have a 5th Generation Fighter developed. The PRC was founded in 1949. A time right after WW2 where USA had superior firepower in land air and sea, and China had nothing. in the late 1980s, china's airforce was equipped with mostly out of date migs. Today, China has air superiority fighters similar to the F-15. And just recently, have developed their counterpart to the F-22/F-35, the J-20. So really, cut them some slack.

@jiefang I wouldn't call the J-20 a counterpart or competitor to the F-35. It's not even close. The J-20 is more closely matched to the F-15, developed 30 years ago. Also, China has existed for 5000 years, they didn't just pop up in 1949. So China has all sorts of time to get ahead, instead they messed around with fireworks.

A clear representation here that you know little more than stereotypes. The chinese invented all basic weapons. The first cruise missile, the first multistage rocket, gun, flamethrower, MRLS. The list goes on. The west had their chance to catch up after the opium wars where the western countries invaded and ransacked China.

1. USAF pilots don't speak chinese!!!!
2. USAF pilots won't stay in a close formation when they're going into a dogfight.
3. USAF pilots won't shoot 4 missiles at 4 planes if their wingmen are doing the same thing!
4. If a missile is inbound, a USAF pilot won't wait until the last moment to evade!
5. USAF pilots don't shoot down their own wingmen!

1. USAF will never use f-16s for surgical strikes when they have better options like f-18, f-15 and most importantly f-22.
2. It is very hard to track low flying aircraft, as shown in case of f-16s, no matter how advanced AWACS u r using.
3. USAF dont use the camouflage scheme on their aircraft as shown in this video.
4. F-16 block 60 has advanced AESA radar which can track j-10 at distance of about >120km

1.USAF pilots won't always find incoming missle's position erly, and how can theyh dudge if they don't even know where the missile is?
2. F22 and F35 are just normal weapons, they are NOT as invincible as Lockheed advertised.
3. Some USAF pilots CAN speak a little Chinese, lol.
4. USAF pilots are humans, NOT as gods as you thought, they will friendly fire (for example, I was one of their victim in Afghanistan!!!)
Conclusion: USAF pilots are motherfuckers !

Why send F-16s when you could send F15s or F22s? And I know the '22 and "35 arent invincible. I talked to a training pilot that I launched out and he told me he actually got a lock and "killed" an F22. I was just stating the 22 and 35 would be better than a plane w/the radar signature of a small house...

It has unprecedented bvr capabilities. The Chinese aerospace industry in the laughing stalk of the world right now. The Radar systems employed on the F22 can easily detect any flying objects for miles around, track them, designate the type of aircraft or missile, determine the threat level, automatically lock and fire.
