@mifan93 I have had my 2001 century since she rolled off the show room floor,at 50k it was just a tick so i took it to the dealer the bast**ds said it was fine after warranty the noise got extremely worse then the vid. she now has 198k cars still mint so i'm gonna swap moter to save guess work. the small town i live in every second century has the same loud and i mean mean loud knock
My 96 cavalier makes the same noise occasionally, depending on the engine temp. If it's really cold outside, the engine would knock until at normal operating temperature.
@Red97Avenger oh really? i happen to have three of these engines. i think i know the sounds. and ALSO happen to be an ASE cert.'ed mechanic with three years working for GM, shut your mouth unless you know what you're talking about
@natey1112 .... you stfu . fuck your ase bullshit . ive build more engines than women youve slept with ... and ive spun the shit out of some rod bearings . i know the sound . and if you watch him rev the engine it proves what i said is true . have a good day , seems they give any dumb fuck these days a certificate ...
I have a 1996 Chevy Corsica with this engine. The lower intake gasket did go on it but I had a similar noise when i started my car up. it would only make that noise for maybe 3 seconds right after startup. The cause was one of the lifters wasn't getting filled up with fluid fast enough and was making the pushrod tap. But it sounds like you have a pushrod-itself problem.
holy shit it can be a number of things if it is a rod it should be louder so its like something stikin like a valve hope the car im buyin with a 3.1 never does that
It sounds like a combination of piston slap and a possible washed out lifter. The lower intake gaskets have a habbit of failing on these engines. It's possible that it washed the lube off of one lifter and is cauesing it to stick a little. Check the puke tank for oil. That more than likely is the culprit. Friggin GM. many engines have this problem.
I have a 96 olds cutlass supreme that had the same knocking noise until I found out that most gm 3.1 engines have bad intake gaskets that go out at around 150,000 to 190,000 miles and after I replaced is the sound went away and hasn't came back yet. I got lucky and when the antifreeze got into the engine it didn't ruin anything.
I have a 97 3100 with that noise. Around 100k it was VERY loud, engine lost power. I personally replaced LIM gasket and lifters.Engine came back to life! Noise was still there, but now gradually went down to light tick and still works, no hesitation! Wonder when it will blow up!
I have a 96 3100 which had the same noise. I wasted my time replacing the timing chain. Dropped the oil pan to find two of the connecting rod bearings loose. Unlucky for me one had eaten out all the babit bearing material. So it was metal to metal. Was told it was not worth fixing since it would of worn con rod and cap into an oval shape.
Piston slap. Sounds like hell but it won't hurt anything, at least for a few years anyway. My dad had a 99 Malibu that was even noisier than the one in this video. He got rid of it a few years ago because of that noise but he saw it last summer, still running and still making that godawful racket. If you can keep those damn intake manifold gaskets from blowing apart that engine should last a while.
My 2000 Malibu 3.1 sounds about the same as this It is very annoying & lowers resale ,less fuel mileage etc.. the car engine could last as long as any engine but It is definitely NOT a normal thing for an engine to be doing this. Go to Pistonslap(dot)com Gm should replace them all. .
That is nothing to worry about. What you are hearing is a little piston slap. It should go away after it is warmed up. I would sugest to use a little sea foam in your oil before you change it. It will help with any sticky lifters. Dont wory my dads Grand Am has over 200k and still running great.
i had a bad lifter that sounded similar but deffinently not that loud, car had 60k on it when it went bad

not knock, its lifter tick.

@natey1112 lifter tick sound decreases as the engine revs and oil pressure increases .... thats rod knock ..... dipshit

i used sea foam it work for like 3-4 weeks and it came back.. but i didnt change oil after using it. is that going to hurt the engine?
edyman87 3 years ago
Yes. Seafoam thins out your oil.
TJcars2 3 years ago
Mine does that too on cold starts, it's annoying.
Jon3800 4 years ago
What car is it?
Also does it go away when the engine warms up?
KWatson1984 4 years ago
The only solution is to get a replacement engine (says the dealer). But a simpler solution is to replace the lifters and check for bent valves.
