  • I played this piece in sixth grade, and it's a fun little piece. I would recommend ripple roll, it sound soo much better. It's also a bit fast, but the notes are dead on. All in all, nice playing

  • Ya it's a bit fast. Try using the ripple roll if possible.

  • total 90 (a)

    LOL

  • completelty awesome

  • absolute shit

  • @cajunstix says the faggot with no experience......

  • absolutely beautiful.

I would add my suggestion not to rush through the quarter notes after triplets and eighths. Keep them in tempo. One quarter note is as long as an eighth triplet. Also, the fortissimo chords before the D.S. could have been louder and should have been detached from each other (as indicated by the // marks). To me, that part should almost be tempestuous, so the chords should crash and be able to fade before the next hit. Just my opinion.

  • Pretty good, I just did this recently for my Jury. Overall you did a great job. Here's a few things I recommend to make it even better!

-In the beginning, vary your roll speeds and dynamics to give it a wavy feeling. Varying your roll speeds keeps it from sounding the same and very monotonous. Keep in mind that you want to keep the tempo also. It is also played at a much faster tempo in the beginning.

-The next section, even though it is piano, make sure the accented notes are accented.

  • When the left hand takes over the dominant part of the triplets its written as forte. This part of the song seems to sound great played aggressively.

-When switching from 8th notes to triplets, make sure you're keeping tempo. Where you play the F#-C# up the scale and then play the triplets on E-B-E-B. There's also a quarter note after the two triplets. Make sure you hold this and don't rush into the 8th notes. It will give a little breathing room and add nice texture to it.

    Great job!

  • Oh my goodness! Actual insightful constructive criticism on youtube? I never thought i would see the day.

    Thank you sir!

  • Great job!

I'm learning this solo now, and my band just played the halo theme song... i cant help but notice that the "c,b,g,b,a" and the later expansion on that in chords is a melody that's also in halo.. =D

  • wow. video game music 4 lyf3!

  • haha im learning this for a recital in a few months and i noticed the exact same halo progression! in those notes

  • sry she e wu

  • she e wo mallets work great on this song

  • great job! But I thought the start of the moderato section was a little too loud (just my opinion). I'm playing it for a solo in a couple months, so I have to keep it in shape.

  • Omg Ben you commented on this too! lol yeah i am playing this for my first 4 mallet solo it is gonna be awesome!

  • it sonds like a cool solo, im doing this one and it would be my first 4 mallet so im excited :]

  • good job. it sounds cooler at the beginning though if you change dynamics to go with the phrasing marks on the page. make it like waves...sea refractions..waves. :]

  • yeah this is a class 1 solo too. im taking it this year.

  • This piece is absolutely beautiful. I love it because there is so much opportunity for creative freedom, and I think you are a player who can take it to the next level and start shaping this piece. Don't be afraid to change the tempo within each section by accelerating and then slowing down. More contrast in dynamics will also give this piece the shape and expression I think it craves. Bravo on your performance!

  • the beginning a lot slower. the middle part could go a little faster. yeah, mallet 4 is really loud. i recommend that mallets should have the same sound for this piece. i love this piece. it was my first four mallet piece.

  • The real speed of the piece is accually a little faster than this but I play it slower to just because it sounds better :P

  • No, the beginning is supposed to be faster than he is playing even. It is written in cut time.

  • I'm sorry i was wrong. I just took a second look at the score and it is in cut time but the tempo is like 42. Good job. my bad

  • Good video. I like the feel at the begining.

Just watch out at 2:26-2:35 your rushing the upcrawls a half beat to fast.

    Good job ;)

    Keep rocking

  • Really, really good! Very nice work.

  • Excellent job! Like most mallet players (especially me), you need a bit of work with the dynamics and just... playing the music.

Also, a preference thing... When you have chords to roll, try striking all the notes at once, then rolling (with as little delay as possible).

When an ensemble plays, they hit every note in a chord together. When a marimba player plays a chord, the notes get split up, and there's no reason for that. (:

  • Fantastic!

I'm considering using this piece for my A level recital :D

  • this doesnt seem too hard. i think i might try this one for solo and ensemble this year

  • I play the vibraphone more than the marimba, so I use Burton grip. Just within the past month I've devoted myself to learning Stevens on my new marimba. They both have their pros and cons, so I figure to know and utilize both of them would be ideal. The first song I learned how to play with Stevens was this one. You played it very well, and I agree with what some have already said: maybe it was just the placement of the camera, but your 4th mallet is louder than the rest.

  • When I perform this one I play the first "wave part" much slower than you do. It sounds like you're trying to hurry through that part, try to put in some more feeling and dynamics to it. Make a bigger wave-effect of it, don't just hurry through it. Otherwise I think you're doing very good. A bit more dynamics in the other parts as well :)

    Good job.

  • After I posted the clip, I indeed tried the "wave" part at a slower pace and it turned out quite well.

  • are you using the stevens grip? i'm using the traditional grip and it poses a problem with the spacing with the E and C, D, etc.

  • Yup, I'm using the Stevens Grip.

  • well, how do you change notes using traditional grip

  • Mallet length, forefinger, thumb.

You do mean traditional and not Burton, right?

If so, it should pretty much just be scissoring your forefinger and thumb apart.

  • yup.....i got huge hands so i had to get adjusted to it....now i'm using stevens grip. much easier. now on to "yellow after the rain."

  • This is my solo!

  • Well done! But after the slow part you have to play pp and before the d.s al coda you have to play the g.p.'s. it sounds very good

  • i hated playing the first part of this solo, its so borin, but after the rolls i thought i got interesting - good job

  • Too fast at the beginning i think. Its marked at half=48 BPM right? Sounds like your more around high 50s. And at the arrpegios it seems your 4th mallet(far left one) is way louder than the other 3

  • I have a feeling that it isn't that mallet 4 isn't being overplayed, but more so, it's the placement of the camera and the sound quality could be easily improved by moving the camera (so I'm a little obvious...).

    Nice work, by the way.

  • im doin this song for solo and ensemble for OMEA

  • where are you from.... in ohio

  • norwood...

  • There should be more dynamic contrast at the faster section. When you get to eighth notes then the triplet section in the middle of the fast, don't leave out a beat, you rush between the transitions. You'll get it.

  • its too fast

  • thank u soooo agree

  • very nice song...Cary, you really improve alot.

  • woah way fast in the beginning of the solo this part should b played really slow and musical.. wut i used was 3 soft/medium marimba mallets w/ a gratduated mallet..make sure your eigth notes during the arrpegios are at the same speed as ur eigth note triplets

  • A little too fast, isn't it?
