I have a 1.8 m tall "giant single sunflower" It only has 9 buds at the moment, but the other sunflowers I treated exactly the same are normal and single headed..... Good to know it has happened to others
can anyone help me.... my sunflower was growing fine. but now the main head is shrivaling back up and out the blue alot more heads have spouted out where the leaves are on the stem... the only thing i can think is it had alot of ants so i put ant powder on it. :-/
some SFs have branching genes that make them multi-headed, has nothing to do with fertilization or watering. i had a Chianti hybrid that must have grew 20-30 heads in one season.
I had a giant sunflower that was supposedly Mammoth, according to the seed package, but it was different from all the other plants that grew from those seeds in that it was multi headed. It had a large single bloom at the top, a cluster of three or four directly and neatly below that, and blooms between the stalk and every leaf all the way down the stem. It had about 20 flowers total!! unfortunately vandals took off the head, but i will save the seeds from the small flowers saved

I am fairly sure that sunflowers develop multiple heads like this when they are watered on alcohol (beer). Is that what you did?

it has`nt been watered with beer just ordinary water and it has`nt even been fed with any fertilizer either
