Insanely good movie. Awesome to see a silent film about a silent him star struggling in an audible movie industry getting nominated for so much. It really says something about our society, and our opinions toward art. My only qualm with the movie was that the story borrowed too heavily from Singing in the Rain, but aside from that it was great.
awesome movie, like a fresh breath of air! Best actor, Best original score, Best Animal in a supporting role (Jack the dog =])!!! I wrote a piece of music for The Artist, please check it out.
I haven't seen the rest of competing performances yet , but after seeing the film I feel like hating the academy if Jean Dujardin did not go home with the golden statue.
@zombiefan011 not exactly. the very first silent film to be nominated for Best Picture was "Wings", the first Best Picture ever in Oscar history. "The Artist" is the 2nd. Close, though!
best movie of the year! amazing movie experience. see it in the theaters! any film lover will love it and any movie goer will enjoy it! fantastic movie
The Artist is a magnificent film with a big heart, and a brave filmmaking attempt by the director, producers, actors and everyone involved in creating it. This film is a strong reminder of what cinema in its pure and simple (and not simplistic) form can do and give to an audience, that is the magic of motion picture!
Side note: After seeing the amazing talented dog in the film, one could well say, who needs a CGI dog anyway.
I hope that Jean Dujardin will win an oscar. After Marion cotillard who won an oscar for ''la vie en rose''it will be great to see another French with the most prestigious trophy.
@peterohara1 It's used as a way for the audience to get inside the mind of Valentin. Valentin's world is silent and we are introduced to him at a turning point. Hollywood is going to the "talkies" and leaving Valentin, who is prideful and unwilling to change, to the wayside. It is only when Valentin puts his pride aside and accepts the new way of things that the audience is able to hear the characters speaking.
@dustincarlson88 In addition to Valentin's "Pride" which is alluded to several times in the film, we are privy to his insecurities about letting the public hear him speak and at the conclusion we discover what could have been causing that fear.
This looks like it could be a great film, rather than the nostalgia piece that I first thought it was. I'm really interested in seeing it now, but knowing my luck it won't reach any of the theaters near me.

the music at the 1:38 seriously sounds like Naruto Shippuden track "White Night". :/

Jean Dujardin has always been an amazing actor, usually hilarious but perfectly capable of very subtle roles !

This should be an amazing film on Blu-ray as well. The surround sound should be a treat... not to mention the visuals which should be stunning.
