  • Brilliant 19:41 - 20:10

  • RIP the great Sylvester James, you are dearly loved. I was born in 1987 and thank god for growing up in the 1990s with VH1. To be young and realize you are gay as a child and see Sylvester's music videos like "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" on Pop Up Video or whatever playing on TV really changed my life.

  • he is one nice looking fellow/diva

  • Thanks for this

  • he is hilarious!! he'd hit the sisters upside the head for not crying at a pretend funeral! bawahahahaha!

  • God created "him" to be. YOU MAKE ME FEEL MIGHTY REAL...Who do you think he was speaking of when he let those words come out in joy not pain. Jesus says come to me as you "are", for you are of my imagine my blood my creation. I'm tired of people or Bible beaters being the one's who spread hate in all forms. No One has the right to judge anyone but for Jesus. Sylvester is looking from heaven saying umm humm Lord we got em still speaking of us Both! Blessings

  • Excuse me, He more than had God's word & God with him in all he did. Let us not forget that The Lord, Jesus, Christ did not and does not ever make an error. Sylvester is a life long "voice", who do you think Blessed him with it!!! Don't say the Lord didn't protect him you not of that. Jesus is with us all no matter if we want him there or not. Our creators blood runs through us feels our every feeling and stand with us through each of them. Please don't Blame the Lord or Sylvester for being who

  • So sad. He had the advantage of having God's word. If he had only repented as the Lord desires, it would have protected him from this.

  • @Pacifica74 True. However, he was molested by a male member of his church on more than one occasion, I believe, so it's understandable that he wanted to get away from that path. If someone from the church had helped him instead of passing judgement, then you're right he would have been protected.

  • this is great!

    thanx for sharing with us.

i'm from Brazil and i didn't know that Sylvester came here in 1979!

I'd like to know what is the word that the promoter said to him when he asked the meaning of the word "Bicha" (that really means queer, gay as an insult, actually).

I did not understand what is said at 20'59''. Could you tell me?

It seems to me that was a joke about translating. (Is it the word "sneak"?). I'd like to know that!

Thank you, dearest! Greetings from Brazil :)

  • @pepaapenas well @ 20:59 he said the promoter replied the english translation is "Snake One"...which does not make sense.

  • Over 20 years later, I still wonder what would have become of Sylvester if he was alive today? He was a great artist and didn't hide who he was, I respect him for that!

  • What is the song at 3:46 ? And was it on an album of Sylvesters?

  • @CartoonsAndGameShows - the song seems to be Stormy Weather

  • @CartoonsAndGameShows - the song seems to be Stormy Weather. I loved his 1977 album and a track called Over & over - "you can't be nobody's lover till you're somebody's friend" - the horn arrangement is superb and the Weather Girls backing vocals were right on the one

  • @CartoonsAndGameShows Stormy Weather by Lena Horne

  • You make me feel, mighty real, Mr. Sylvester James. RIP

  • Thank you so much for this!

  • I could of sworn that "SMALL TOWN BOY" was sung by Sylverter; but i was wrong. It was sung by a WHITE band ; bronski beat! If only Sylvester had had a hypnotic HOOK like Small Town Boy to sing to. If u YouTube 'STB', you'll find a lot of cover versions of it; even REMIX'S & MASHUPS! That's how infectious 'STB' is.

  • I am interested in writng a screenplay about his life!

  • They made a movie about Ray Charles (Ray) and the Supremes why don't they make one about Sylvester James called Shinning Star. I will play Sylvester since I favor him.

  • I've always loved his songs...but now....what I think I really appreciate is his honesty as to who he was during a time period when it wasn't considered acceptable. That took a lot of strength and courage. I appreciate him being true to himself. And the fact that abuse from within didn't taint his love for God....my goodness.

  • at least he didnt get murdered and at least he didnt kill anyone

  • what is that song playing @09:32?

  • thank u tv one for making these episode of all these great singers, i really love the sylvester story if it wasn't for the show i would have never knew who sylvester was

  • he sounds like aretha

  • Does anyone else think Sylvester's sister looks like Saaphyri from The Flavor of Love and Charm School?

  • @tvfan06 ...no but he could have been a Braxton.....as in Toni

  • thx for the video... i would love to see more live shows with two tons

  • I am heartened that this important, historic tale is being told of one of our greatest gay icons. Thank you.

  • His sister is so pretty. Beautiful skin.

  • It's amazing that he died of complications and not the virus itself..amazing..Excellent documentary. Thank you for posting this!

  • @asana1973 back then most ppl died of complications xo I know I rememer 47 of my friends just from that decade including Sylvester that passed on from Aids and complicatons x xoxo Mighty Souls that touched my life ... Grateful xoxxox

  • @asana1973 AIDS is a virus that weakens the immune system and makes it difficult to fight other illnesses. Technically, people don't die from AIDS. They die from the illnesses their system was unable to cure.

  • Exactly! Even when people do have full-blown AIDS, if they acquire pneumonia and die, the cause of their death is noted as "pneumonia" - not AIDS. Thank you very much.

  • @asana1973 HIV doesn't kill anybody. It destroys their immune systems. When the immune system is so reduced that you are at risk of dying, you have AIDS. When people "die of AIDS," they die of some health complication that they were only susceptible to because of how HIV destroyed their immune systems.

  • Yo! I have been looking forward to this one for ages! Thankyou!!!!!

  • the best not the best gay singer but the best disco singer. awesome

  • Oh sweet! I have been waiting for this one to be put up on here. I love it! Thanks a bunch!!

  • WOW . SLYVSESTER STILL " MAKE ME FEEL MIGHTY REAL" WHEN EVER I HEAR ANY OF HIS SONGS , . " i WHO HAVE NOTHING'" IS MY FAVORITE THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THIS ON YOU TUBE,

  • Thanks. I really enjoyed this. I don't have TVOne so I look forward to seeing Unsung episodes on youtube. Again, thank you.

  • This was just fantastic to see our SYL' singing once again !!!.. There were some new stuffs I've never seen before + what a great pleasure just to hear my so dear GEEEEEE'-nie Honey TRACY and Queen Motha' Martha WASH !!!.. I wish we could hear Izora, but she might have left before they realized this... Anyway, thank you so very much for sharing this with all of us, and help keeping SYL's memory, voice and art alive, in the U.S., here in FRANCE and all over the World !!!.. How great his art !!!..

  • thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for getting this up here!!!!!!

  • thanks for uploading. i never got to see this.

  • This was terrifc, but one correction: the documentary said that Sylvester kept his illness to himself. I don't think that's true. I believe was one of the first celebrities to ask to be photographed while having AIDS, saying "I don't want my friends to get this." The proof is in an article and photograph in People Magazine, which I believe ran before his death in Dec 1988. Doesn't anyone have video of the War Memorial concert to post?

  • @sensationsmag Could they have meant when his initial diagnosis? Because there was not test for the virus early on, no on knew how long they were infected. Looking at photos from the late 70s and early 80s (weight loss), I'm convinced that he had been infected for quite some time. Since the late stage decline is whatmost ppl were most shocked about, I think that was his agenda for the world to see.

  • Sylvester I´m still loving you, you are great forever and ever. miss you.

  • Growing up in San Francisco and seeing Sylvester around town and at the clubs will forever be in my heart as one of the best times of my life ........

  • Though it does puzzle me why it misses out on the early 80s Megatone days.

  • This was uploaded before and taken down promptly, thankyou very much for uploading it again :D
